I just ordered my first rda - a Plume Veil fby Aether Tech.

I have been using Kayfuns and haven't had any issues with wicking them and getting good performance.

My qestion is - What is the best method to wick a dual coil setup in an rda?

I have seen anywhere from this...

To this...

Common sense would tell me that the bottom image would be better but since I haven't built one yet, I'd like to hear from more experienced users.

One other question - It appears that the wick goes through the coils (like I do my Kayfuns) in the top image and the bottom image has the coils sitting on a "bed" of cotton. Does this matter? Does either improve performance?

The PlumeVeil is a semi-deep well, 4 post (dual +) RDA... who's claim to fame is the multiple air flow sources. Perhaps the handiest thing I found, at least to me, was the positive post was adjustable for position relative to the negative posts.

A clone has been produced (what a shock :glare:) - but as it's just been released and I've not seen it in person yet... just somewhat dubious photos from a few companies I'm not familiar with... I don't know if it's 1:1 for features. Wait a week or two - FT will have it, and US vendors will be doing pre-orders.

Anyway... you can single, dual, quad or octa coil it. I ran a quad 25 gauge 10 wrap at 0.2Ω (2mm mandrel), experimenting with cotton (as the ol' stand-by "baseline"), ramie and rayon... ending up with a rayon "bed/cloud" wick arrangement.

I tend to do bed (or bed/cloud) on high flow, multi-coil, deep sub-ohm RDAs - where they consume juice at a high rate... and less air-restrictive pull-throughs on medium and low air flow... what I call "standard pattern" attys.
Lots of wick tends to restrict air flow, so I tune wicking type and density to best accommodate resistance/juice consumption and air flow.

For a RDA noob, I'd start with a simple dual and pull-through set-up, with the air turned down... and work from that baseline.

I personally find that the method depicted in your first/top picture always works best for me. With cotton, I've come to the realization that less is more - especially in RDAs with deep juice wells. The less material your juice has to traverse to get to the coil - the better, quicker and more efficiently the device will wick - continuously. The heat from the coil (as you fire it) draws the liquid toward it...

on the top pic, you can have the wick connected from one coil to the other up over the center post without affecting airflow, one length of wick not two and have a little overhang of wick out the otherside of the coil that you can fold underneath the coil, and leave a gap for airflow between the coil and the wick underneath it, when you drip down onto that wick through your driptip it will rush straight to your coil

Thanks for the responses guys!

Ok, so, it is a matter of the type of coil setup used and airflow that will determine how it should be built. I'll take y'alls advice and start out like the first image and experiment from there.

Wow State O' Flux! They really do clone fast. I thought that there had only been one batch made and they were pretty much sold out as it took me forever to find this one.

I can see how dual and quad coils could be set up but octa? Although I've seen octa coil builds I just can't picture that in my mind on this RDA. No matter as I (read n00b) don't intend to attempt anything like that just yet.

Funny how little time it takes anymore. Sometimes... I'd swear the clone appears - or at least pictures of what's suppose to be the clone - on alibaba within days of a genuine first run selling out.

Earlier this year, and I can't remember the particular item, there were conversations of a mech clone coming out within 24 hours of the original. In other words, both the original and clone were made at the same location in China... the only difference was the fancy box, fancier price tag and where the mech was shipped from.

I use duals most of the time and a few old single coil rigs can vape pretty darn well. Quads have their place... but octa coil builds tend to be, at least to my old jaded eyes, more one of them "hey kids - look what I can do!" showin' off kinda deals.
Excess for the sake of it... but you gotta admit, folks like deedupdex have made quite a little name for themselves with fancy builds. ;-)

Wow! That's even more unbelievable about clones. I think I'd be a little ...... if I bought an authentic and it was made in the same factory as the supposed clone.

I kind of wondered about the octa coil and pretty much came to a similar conclusion as you. And yeah, I have seen some of deedupdex's coil builds. That dude has got some seriously steady hands and awesome eyesight. I could never see myself building anything nearly as extravagant as anything he's built. Quite the talented individual for sure.
