You can maybe try tying the cotton with clean organic twine to keep the wick form puffing up.

I just had the wick too thick.. I've since learned to roll a really thin wick. The makeup rounds work good because I can cut off a really (REALLY) thin sliver and thread it through my coil. It works great :)

I meant wrap the thin cotton string around the cotton, this will look better in the tank i was thinking.Ive been using cotton in my egoc for a few weeks now, seems like that last a long time as well.

Thanks.. I think I need to just roll a whole new ss wick. This one just keeps giving a funny metal taste. I had such a hard time rolling it thin enough to get it to slide down into the hole. I'm pretty sure my coil is adequate. I just need to keep working with it. I'd like to experiment with different wire gauges and mesh sizes but all that takes ordering more stuff and right now after Christmas, paying off my cc is my priority.

I use SS Mesh in my Vivi Nova 3.5ml.... here are a things I do that could help.

1. Cut your mesh (I use 500) on a diagonal on your sheet. Meaning dont cut it square out of the sheet of mesh.
What I do is take a business card, and measure out how I want my mesh. I use 20x40mm.
After I cut that size out of my business card, I use it as a template.
Place that on your mesh... and turn it diagonal...so it is at a 45 degree angle to the edges of your mesh.
This will make bending your mesh EXTREMELY easier...without kinking.

2. Take a small paperclip.... roll your mesh around it. Keep rolling...test fitting into the head...rolling...test fitting.
Once it will go in straight to the head.... then bend the mesh into your U shape. Leave the paperclip in for support...
It should not kink if you go slow and cut your mesh on the angle. Keep test fitting while shaping the U.
Once you get it where you want it... Oxidize it with the paperclip in there.

3. After oxidized.... take a very very small piece of cig rolling paper and roll it around the wick where your coils are.
The idea is to get a tiny piece wrapped around the mesh so if you put the wick in the head..the cig paper would be inside with the coil.
If you make it to fat....it will squeeze in the sides. It is ok....but it will not burn off when you test fire the coils.... you would need to gently remove the excess cig paper. The cig paper will give your coil a little extra between the coil and mesh. Make sure to roll the coil semi tight around the cig paper. The paperclip will give enough support to do so.

4. Gently straighten the paperclip...and remove it. You do not need to straighten it all the way...just enough to slide out the paperclip.

5. Insert the wick into the head and reconnect everything. If you twist the hot legs or not is up to you. I normally dont...

6. Test fire to burn off the cig paper, and that will leave a nice extra coating under the coils to help prevent hotspots.

I use this method all the time.... takes maybe 5 minutes and I rarily get hot spots. It wicks well...
You just need to vape a tank or so to get the mesh working well....but that is normal.

To clean...I just empty my juice. Dry burn the coils while blowing off excess gunk. Get the coils firing hot, then just re-add juice.

Been using 500 SS Mesh for awhile and just decided to try the cotton ball method... Why didn't I try this before buying SS is beyond me. If you do it right with just enough so that the wick swells and floods your coil with juice barely touching any material it's almost like vaping a fresh dual coil carto every hit. Getting good gurgly snap crackle pop with amazing flavor and throat hit and plumes of vapor.

For those that are wondering, I simply boiled them in water for 40 minutes, strained, dried fast with a paper towel stretched it evenly and thin, rolled lightly into a string and fed it through a premade coil. I also mill the wholes bigger on the vivi heads so basically you just find a nail that's the correct size for your head slot however big you made it, make the coil on it, and drop it down in and secure it then pull the nail out. My first attempt I did a pretty tight roll and this just pinches off the liquid flow, don't roll cotton ball wicks tight! It should be so lose it's actual hard to thread into your coil. Just keep spinning it and be careful not to squish it to much while threading it.

My coil is 6 wraps counting on the top @ 2.6 ohms with kenthal 32-A1, and using 4.4v on the Provari.

I've been inspired to try this my self. I've been using hemp wick 1mm recently, and while it works ok (just ok, not great) on some flavors, lighter flavors are pretty much ruined. Just got back from wally world with a bag of 100% cotton balls, was gonna get cheesecloth but no one knew what it was and I could not find it on my own. I gotta keep my eye on this thread for other things to try.
Thanks to all the pioneers.

[edit]
Day 2, I managed to break an atty head drilling into it to make a bigger hole for the cotton.
bought a giant back of cotton balls, no one at the store knew what cheesecloth was.
I managed to make a shorted atty, so that failed, takes me about 100 tries to get a good coil on the cotton (I don't have a screw handy to do it like some of you do). I've got attempt number 5 soaking in juice now (I made sure it was not shorted), but wow I've wasted alot of juice doing this, but sooner or later i'll get it.
Using ViVi Nova btw.

Ok I got it right and really its AWESOME! Now I just need to get the skills to do it right every time and I'm set, lucky for me there is a local juice shop so I refill tomorrow.

Great news! I, too, fought with a learning curve getting cotton wicks to work right... tightness of coil and amount of wicking material really matters on cotton. I almost gave up on it, as I was sick of getting either a burning cotton taste -or- vape that tasted like I was sucking on a cotton ball.

You mentioned hemp wick... I've tried the Aunt Lydia's bamboo crochet thread several times and was not impressed. It wicked well, but the juice always had a funky woody flavor to it that never went away.

With all of this re-wicking, has anybody tried to ream out the slots on the head to allow the cotton to "puff" more easily?

I've seen images of vivi heads drilled out, trying to get some anecdotal knowlege on the efficacy. :)

I've also been reading that cotton works best after a "steep time", some are suggesting up to 12-24hrs before attempting to use the wick.

Thoughts?

I know xMackx modded his VVN head with bigger slots to accept a cotton wick, which will POOF (as I like to call it).

I couldn't tell you where there are pictures, but he checks into the "different cottons for different wicks" thread often. He could probably answer your questions.

In reference to the steep time -

I built a cotton vivi head last night. Let it sit overnight (12 Hours), whacked it this morning. Crazy vapor, no flavor. (Not sure if 100% VG Boba's has something to do with this).

Been pushing thru the taste due to ^adeline's instructions and the flavor is starting to come through slowly.. I am very hopeful for this cotton :D

I'll probably drill a spare head out tomorrow and see if I can get some more cotton in there.. had to use a very small amount due to the small slit.

I used cotton for a good while until I found a local supplier for hemp cord. It mutes flavours more than the cotton used to, but it is sooo much less hassle to build the heads. Link to manufacturer below

Hemp Cord Set Multi-Weight - 10-20-36-48 Lbs Natural

Mine are all reamed heads (done with a round needle file in less than five minutes) and what I do is select appropriate size cord say second biggest one and I use four wicks. Then wind the coil over the four wicks and make off into the head. Once in and the coil legs trimmed I remove one of the wicks to allow for expansion of the wick and three wicks tend to form nicely into the extra space.
