I'm not 100% sure but I would say that would be sketchy as if you move that coil too far to one side you would cause a short etc.. IMO if your going to go that far just get you some wire and rebuild it while your in there its not much work at all. Check out PBusardo's rebuild on the Nova video
Could you possible take a coil head and remove the silica wicks, then replace them with the yarn strands? I have some old heads that have burnt silica wicks but the coil is fine, just needs to be cleaned.

I got some unbleached cotton fabric from walmart. 1/2 yard for 99 cents. I havent used it in a coil as of yet. Has anyone ever gone this route?

The weave will probably be to thick. I tried making a wick from cross stitching fabric and it didn't work well at all. I finally got some cheesecloth from Walmart, and that's working great so far. (Just made it about an hour ago.)

Another update...after trying cheesecloth and bamboo yarn I still prefer wicks from a cotton ball. Instead of winding the coil around the wick, I make the coil first then roll out the piece of cotton ball and slide it through. I've recently bought a did clone but I can't get it to work and taste as good as my rebuilt vn.

It would be difficult. The people who wrap the coils for the stock heads wrap them insanely tight. Tighter than anything I'd be willing to wrap myself. I've tried weaseling the silica wick out of used and new coils and I gave up.

I think these tight wraps cause some of the burnt taste issues people experience. Since I started recoiling mine I've not had one issue with it.

I'm so proud of you! I hadn't thought about makeup rounds?

Lol yeah they were really cheap. Mack was saying they work well just waiting on him to tell me how to use them. Oh and I'm going to try cotton balls as well considering how much you like them. How long do they last? Do they gunk up quick? Happy new year btw!

Cotton balls and makeup rounds are pretty much the same thing... cotton. I've been using a wick and coil for about a week (maybe 2 weeks) before I find myself putting it down and reaching for something else. As far as gunking up, I would imagine that depends on the particular juice that's used. I know you like the unflavored, it wouldn't gunk up at all. My latest wick and coil meters out to 1.5ohms and I've vaping it at 3.1 on the provari.

I've been working with my did clone (vulcan) but I haven't got it to work to my satisfaction. In theory, it should work and taste just like the VN.. I mean, it just a coil with a wick through it. I took out the ss mesh and slid a thin strip of cotton through it, plenty of vapor but no taste, and what taste there is has a burnt flavor to it. It doesn't seem to be wicking as well as the cotton in the vn. I'll keep playing with it though. :D

I just went to the linked thread... great tutorial! It's a couple pages past where you linked (for anyone trying to find it) I'm going to try installing my coil and then sliding the wick in.

TIP: reading glasses make all this much easier!

Have you got it going yet? If you're still having problems, some of us might be able to give you some tips. Let us know. :vapor:

Thanks.. I think I need to just roll a whole new ss wick. This one just keeps giving a funny metal taste. I had such a hard time rolling it thin enough to get it to slide down into the hole. I'm pretty sure my coil is adequate. I just need to keep working with it. I'd like to experiment with different wire gauges and mesh sizes but all that takes ordering more stuff and right now after Christmas, paying off my cc is my priority.

I admit it.. I like using the silica. But with all the "silica shards" warnings, I've steered away from it. I bought some cotton (candle wick) and it's alright. It's very easy to burn though, even at low voltages. After a couple days, I start getting a burnt taste and I take it apart and sure enough, the wick and coil is black. The kind I'm using is the square braided cotton #1/0 and it seems to be a bit thick and dense. So, I started looking around my house. What does most every home have in it's medicine cabinet? Cotton balls! So I took a cotton ball, tore a piece off of it and rolled it around to make a kind of a thin rope (like you would roll play dough). I coiled my wire around it and here it is. Not a good picture (can't seem to get my camera to focus up close) It looks kinda funny and I figured it wouldn't work. I put some juice on it and checked the ohms.. it read 2.5 (which is good because that means it not only works, but it's not a low resistance and will eat up batt life)

I filled the tank with juice and started off low. It's works really well! The cotton "ball" seems to wick the juice much better than the braided cotton rope..which was what I was after to begin with. How long it will last I don't know. Here's a picture of it with juice in the tank..

The cotton poofs all up inside the tank and it looks as funny inside the tank as it did outside. I'm going to use this awhile and see how it works. with it metering at 2.5.. I'm vaping at 4.2. It's giving big clouds of vapor (70%PG 30%VG mix) and good throat hit and tastes nice and clean. I'm thrilled to find something that works (so far) that can be bought practically anywhere without having to order it from the internet and wait for it!

You can maybe try tying the cotton with clean organic twine to keep the wick form puffing up.
