It has a burning taste even though the cotton is still wet. But when I check the cotton its already broken into 2 pcs

You have a hot spot in your coil it sounds like. That compounded with too much cotton can lead to that.

When you rewick, try firing it dry. See how it glows, and if there's a spot heating up faster than the rest, drag your ceramic tweezers across that area.

The cotton should fit just inside of the coil. Not too loose, but not too tight .it should give a little resistance but not stop you from pulling it
