Can't wait to check it out. I got some Silica wick, and some cotton, and need to decide which to try first. I'm thinking the cotton, as it will be easier to get thru the coil.
I have some 30g Kanthal and I want to do about a 1.5-1.7Ω coil over a 14g needle. Does that sound like maybe 6 wraps?

Oh yeah :) Good deal. Yep 6-8 for starters. I'd go cotton and never look back. I've never even tried sillyca :)

Leave the legs on when you check the ohms. You can slip form, needle, drill bit, etc., back in loosen screws, slip out of posts and either add or subtract a coil or two. Have your winding leg a couple inches long, first few coils, for easier holding while winding, and once you do only a few you'll have better idea how long a piece you need. I like leaving them a little long, too, as wire is less apt to go flying when you trim it. Stepping on short piece of wire, hiding in rug, is a beech. I also worry about doggie pads or even dogs ingesting or inhaling small pieces from hard floors. My mother had a beauty shop and was always on our case about coming in shop barefooted and shaving legs in filled tub because of short pieces of hair embedding in feet or bu t t. It becomes painful and much harder to remove than a splinter. Just saying. A little magnet in wrapping kit is helpful or one tool magnetized to keep little pieces collected till they go to trash.

BTW.... second the cotton. I was a stuborn cotton holdout. Amazing how fast and easy. You can rewick in a minute but it takes a little longer for coil to cool down after a cleaning dryburn.

And I have, at times, acute taste abilities. I've never experienced weird taste from cotton first few hits even when I use no nic no flavor VG.
