Unfortunately rhyzw, I believe the answer to that question is unknown at that time. There has just been very little research done on the matter.

However, you can read this article about a study that has not yet been published (at least it hadn't as of the date of this article).

I've run and smoked for a long time. So far vaping feels a lot better on my lungs. I wish I could say I'm so much faster and all now that I vape but it's not that simple. I was coming off an injury when I started vaping and I had a lot of distractions getting back into training with Holidays and all that crap that gets in the way. Plus the cold is difficult to get speed in and oh yeah, I'm in my late 30s now. I think if had 27 year old legs to go along with these new lungs I might actually be fast! Having a run scheduled for the night is motivation not to smoke analog/stinkies/real cigs during the day. It feels like I'm breathng deeper and cleaner. Close to 24 hours smoke free before a run seems to really help especially if I'm only smoking a couple a day. It's tempting to just get rid of the smokes all together. I hope with some more training and better weather I can get faster than I was 10 years ago. Even though I know I'm not in great shape right now it feels like my lungs are ready to go hard for a long time.

Sometimes I want to hack up during a run but there isn't too much junk to hack up anymore. The urge is still there having been a runner and smoker for so long you are use to hacking crap up every mile or two LOL!

Going from smoking to vaping, i can tell you without a doubt that vaping has nowhere near the negative effects of smoking. However i cannot remember being a non smoker in comparison, so if there is some small effect as compared to not using smoke OR vapor, i wouldnt know. But i do feel like my lungs are 100%

edit: err forgot to add that i run and mountain bike frequently!

I played soccer for 8 years, then I stopped and smoked heavy for 5 years, basically ruined all my lung expansion & endurance my body had. Now that I no longer smoke & vape..a lot.. It is my belief that heavy vaping CAN restrict breathing a touch but not super noticeable. Breathing anything but clean air isn't great for the lungs, but vaping is MUCH better in that respect than cigs.

I notice a little heaviness in the lungs if I run or work out after hitting the menthol pretty hard for a few days, other than that my workouts are much better than when I smoked. Wish I'd had vaping back when I was in the military, don't know how I got through those PT's and 5 mile runs while smoking a pack a day but do remember they were pretty rough.

For what it's worth in this discussion, I smoked for 40 years, finally at over a pack a day. I have used the elliptical 4 times a week both when smoking and now primarily vaping. Now that I'm mostly vaping I find that my breathing is a LOT easier and my heart rate has gone way down from what it used to be. I need fewer and shorter breaks (I do HIIT exercise). Also at night I don't find myself trying to constantly "catch" my breath when laying down to sleep. So I'd say yes - if you were a smoker and are now a vaper it is better for you. If you didn't smoke but you now vape may be a different story, I can't speak for that.
