I lived in the LES part of PA for many yrs. Always a curious thing. Remember winters where the snow and ice so bad that all the animals stayed in the plowed roads. Remember that one bad winter when we drove to Niagara Falls and the falls was pretty much completely frozen over. Absolutely beautiful and we were about the only ones there. They had the snow plowed with steps and holes so you could see the falls. This was before you needed a passport to cross to the CDN side. Has always been a favorite place of mine and would drive up a couple times a month and then onto Toronto. A great weekend trip for us, late fall and winter always my fave time there as few tourists

Now we live in the WV snow band. Wx person says that you can expect 1-2 inches unless you live in the mountains and then you can expect 1 ft. LOL We have about 6 inches and looks like it may have stopped but just bum numbin' cold out there. I need to shovel myself a path to the woodburner and fill it and one so I can get to the bird feeders. It never used to bother me when my Samoyed was still with me, he loved the snow and cold and was such a goof that he always made it fun, now all I do is shovel and miss him and that is not so much fun. As I said before... Misfit Farm... they find me and I am waiting for the next one

and Good morning everyone!
Haha! It is so cold here today.....my chickens are upset I wont let them out, but with it being 11 degrees today they will freeze their butts off. They just dont understand! Lol It has warmed a little though, and may be around 14 degrees by now, but the wind chill feels like 0 degrees. I went out to refresh their water and check on their heat lamp, and forgot my gloves...I thought I was gonna cry my fingers were so froze! Lol I grew up in a part of the state that gets terrible winters, and I am thankful the town I live in now does not have as harsh as winters as I grew up having. I feel for my parents, because the winters are harder as they have gotten older.
I hope a new dog finds you :) then you will have a buddy to make those trips to the wood burner better :)

We had a wind storm last night. Blew everything around and left a white powder behind.:-x Rest of the week doesn't look to good either. 12"-18" by weeks end.:(

Thinking about eating nonstop for the next few days and going into Hibernation.:D

News at noon said it was 5 F degrees here but wind chill makes it like -whatever F Degrees, think the gusts are supposed to be 20-35 mph.
I grew up in Kanawha, Calhoun, and Harrison counties and am now one of those old folks you speak of :)

Used to have a rooster whose feet would freeze solid with the slightest dip below 30F, never bothered the other chickens but would have to take him in and thaw him out. One day, hubby came in and said "Guess who's for supper!" He had gotten tired of nursing the old bird and plunked him. He made great chicken and dumplings... I know, you don't wanna hear that but......

Then hubby said he wanted a mean rooster so talked to friend and it took her son and my 2 boys all day to catch this huge white nasty rooster... brought him home and hubby took one look and made us take him back, he was about the size of our turkeys and absolutely nasty. We ended up with one that was fine as long as you looked at him but as soon as you turned your back, he would nail you in the leg. Always carried a broom handle to keep him at bay. One day he nailed me and I whacked him and he went flying across the barn and landed about 15 ft away, feet up in the air. Came in and told hubby that I killed the basketard. About 15 min. later we looked out and he was running across the yard chasing one of my cats.

I think you may get a little respite from the ocean. McHenry Md... Deep Creek Lake area is in the mountains like we are and it generally is colder there than here.

I tend to do the hibernate thing. Was worse with all the dark in Alaska and now have a mom to take care of so forced to suck it up and adapt.

Yea, my hens are like pets :) I have never eaten a one of them. My favorite one passed away last month, and I buried her and I am going to carve her a wooden head stone :) Roosters can be such jerks, and I do not keep one around regularly unless I am wanting baby chicks. I love my birdies :)

The homemade suet blocks sound awesome! I will have to check that out. They are like little kids, and so funny! I could laugh for an hour watching them run for a grub or something thst excites them! Lol i always feel like the roosters drive the hens crazy and kill their spirits...I know that may sound silly, but watching a rooster belittle the hens just bothers me. :)
They really are a hoot :)

if you need a recipe, holla - Abby is kind of experimenting with them now after doing some research - and after mixing liquid (melted lard, peanut butter) into dry ingredients, we are just putting them out on covered porch area to cool... since it's like... cold.

Afternoon (Morning, for all my western friends)! Hows everyone?
Here's a question for y'all, been using my first Mech Mod and rda this past week... gotta say I am loving this thing!!!!!, how often do you re-wick?
really depends on usage and coil gunking - some folks advocate every couple of days, some once a week or so - i tend to rotate rda's so probably less frequently - i also find doing a round or two of unflavored can kind of 'clean' em up a little as well in between wickings

Just brought 6 large bundles of wood in. 5 Degree wind chill, no stamina(shutup!-lol) and one handed hauling. Back out to drag the waste cans around back....... Think I'm done for the week. Thankfully, The emergency wood supply is still in the garage. I may need to hit it later this week.<cold, but no wind>

*On an unhappy note. My 15yo Grandson just headed for Med Express. While I was hauling wood, he was cooking Breakfast. Poured Hot Bacon Grease into a Cold Jar. Then he tried to pick it up......................and it popped. Nice burn from top of Chest to waist. :( Been there myself, twice, and know just what he is feeling.

Just Realized what he did(most) wrong. He screwed the Top back on the Jar, so it expanded blowing the bottom out.
