So, did anyone else upgrade to Windows 7 yet? I fell for all the hoopla about better security, etc. and decided to try it.

It took a little over two hours to install and then another half hour or so to download and install all the updates already out.

I've noticed a few nice features, but so far haven't noticed that boot up time is any faster (like they promise).

Better security? Not sure yet - didn't have any problems with Vista. Fewer crashes? Didn't have any crashes before.

All in all, I wish I still had my old computer back with Windows XP. I would never have upgraded to Vista if my old unit hadn't finally given up the ghost. When I shopped for a new one, they ALL came with Vista (XP was a $150 option). First time I ever heard of paying MORE for an older system.

Just wondering what YOUR thoughts are about Windows 7, and if you have (or are going to upgrade)?

I had Windows 7 RC for a while. Ran it on a Netbook and my main machine (desktop). Purchased Windows 7 Professional on the 21st.

It's a nice OS, however, it is not substantially different from Vista.

The mass hype about the OS is an odd one. I feel it might have occured because so many ignored the perfectly acceptable OS that Vista was (jumping on the negative bandwagon) and are now fascinated by Windows 7 which presents much of what Vista did. That with some very clever marketing from Microsoft :)

I've used MS OS's since 3.1 (DOS before that), XP was certainly one of my personal favourites, Vista was a nice aesthetic upgrade to XP and Windows 7 takes a few of the finer points of XP and merges them with Vista. It is overall a nicer and more efficient OS.

I don't want to start a flame war - Just speaking from a personal perspective :) My MS qualifications might make me a little biased though ;) I know some people get a little sensitive about the whole XP vs Vista vs 7 thing!

Squid,
Click on the start button, then open all programs. Scroll down to 'Accessories' and click on it. Scroll down to 'System Tools' and click on that. Then scroll down to 'Disk Defragmenter.' I pinned the program to the desktop, since I like to Defrag weekly. Yes, I sure miss XP. In fact I still miss 3.x

I've also been using the Win7 RC release for about 6 months now, absolutely love it myself. Huge improvement from Vista, I'll tell you that much. Looking forward to getting an SSD and optimizing 7 for it's use. I've saw benchmarks using an SSD which runs sub 20 second boot times, way faster read/writes, looks very promising.

I was kind of bummed today because I heard the new Acer Ferrari One 200 netbook was being released today but apparently that isn't the case in the US, I've only seen it for sale on a handful of UK and Japanese sites :(

I just bought a new PC in the last few months. I was told that I qualified for a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out, October 22, but was never told how to get it. I figured the details were inside the box (instructions) but never found anything about it inside. I have original receipt and everything. So...

How would I get the upgrade? Just thought one of you might know or have an idea. Thanks for any help you might be able to give :)

This should point you in the right direction. The process to redeem your upgrade varies from different manufactures.

All I got to say, is if it isn't broken, don't fix it. I love my WinXP, no problems, There are still places that sell pc's with WinXP if you request it, so if I ever invest in another one, that's what I'm gonna do.

To me, it's like an older model car, that you love, it's just better made, stronger, and built to last than the newer models.

Ran the beta since december, upgraded to rc when I had too.

I also run the RC on my laptop for work.

7 is the only OS I run.

Its pretty much superior to XP in every single way. If you disagree with this you are probably stubborn, close-minded or otherwise opposed to change for whatever reason.

That being said, whom ever made the 'like mac' comment. Let me correct you. Much better than mac is what you meant to say ;)

The new task bar takes everything thats cool about the OSX Dock and makes it better. The functionality of the windows 7 taskbar makes the OS X Doc eat ****.

And who cares who stole what idea from whom? Windows 3.1 was stolen from mac. Windows in general is a stolen idea.

Just because an idea was stolen doesnt make it worse, actually it usually makes it better because you can change everything you dont like about the idea you're stealing it from and make it better, which MS definitely did with their task bar on Win7.

Anyway, I guess I'm biased because I HATE mac's with a passion. I would get into why - and aside from my personal reasons - would probably just start a flame war.

Anyway, If you have XP, trust me, you are missing out - same goes for you mac people ;) lol (sorry i had to)

I'm sorry but that's a very incorrect and ignorant statement.

XP is not better made, its not 'stronger' (whatever that means), and not built to last - Trust me on this, read on.

You will eventually have to upgrade to 7 and here is why: XP is not capable of handling the newer hardware that is on the horizon. If you want the 'corvette' you'll have to run the software that supports the 'corvettes' hardware, otherwise you'll have to continue driving your Ford Model-T ;)

Built to last? Maybe... on your current, out-dated hardware :p

If you like XP you'll love seven, once you get used to it. So what? There is a 2-week learning curve... I think as e-cig vapers we all know a thing or two about a learning curve ;) I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you find

So glad I saw this thread to remind me to order my upgrade to 7! :D I just got a new Acer laptop with Vista a few days ago for my dog grooming shop.. not realizing the Windows 7 was coming out today.. or I would have waited
It did have the free upgrade to 7.. so I went and ordered it. I thought the salesperson told me I'd have to pay shipping on it.. but was happy to see that it was all free.... even the shipping

My pc is hardly a model-T, Lol. I've just heard waaay too many horror stories about ppl switching to Vista, and having sooo many problems, they'd be posting questions on the net, asking for help trying to switch it back, so I'm just gonna lay back for awhile, once it's been out for awhile, we'll see what reviews and users say.

I enjoy my pc, and I'm just leary of anything that hasn't been out long enough to prove itself.
