I run OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 Ultimate (Boot Camp) and Mac Os outperforms Windows 7 without a doubt. I used to be a Windows fan since I was a HUGE PC gamer but after getting my PS3, I stopped playing on my computer and concentrated more on work.

Time went by and I felt like I needed something new, bought an iMac and BANG! I load photoshop cs4 in less than 7 seconds on my mac vs 32 seconds on my windows 7. From shutdown to fully operational my mac takes 12 seconds.

I mean.... How can't you like that kinda speed?

windows 7 looks like MS is trying to look like a mac and made even more of the background stuff you could tweek in XP hiden. i still cant figure out how to defrag in vista

WinDefrag is soooo slow, I use Defraggler and Crap Cleaner, both free downloads and both better than MS junk. Internet Exploder was exiled from my machines many moons ago in favour of Firefox. WinFirewall is disabled, ZoneAlarm (free) looks after everything.
I think Vista is garbage and run XP Pro, I ran the rock solid NT Pro when 98 and ME were crashing more than Stevie Wonder on the Dodgems! I have a friend who looks after huge networks and he will not have Vista or IE anywhere near his machines.
John.

IE is definitely nowhere near my machine either.

@leministre: What good is a 12 second boot up when all of the software sucks? Firefox, for instance runs like poop on a mac comparatively to its windows counterpart. In fact, the whole OS just, imho, has a few screws loose. I dont want to get into the debate here... but wes borg of dead troll said it best in 1999 speaking to a 5 year old girl:

"the next time your daddy says his computer isnt 'working', tell him its 'broken' and to give it to you to play with, then send him out to buy an iMac, its a computer especially made for idiots, ahem, I mean mommies and daddies"

LOL <3 wes

I guess it really comes down to how much ram you have and what video card you have. My buddy has a nvidea GeForce 6 series (nothing special but win7 capable), with 2 gb ram on a P4 machine and windows 7 is running pretty good for him. I'll have to ask him what experience score windows is giving him, but yeah if you have at least 2gb of ram and a decent video card win7 should run fine.

My work lapop has a 1ghz amd mobile sempron chip (single core) and 2gb of ram with an ATI xpress 200 mobile video chipset (which isnt that good) I have a 3.0 only on my rating but it still runs great. I'm not complaining at all. Honestly, I feel it runs win7 better at 2gb ram than it ran xp with 1gb. (I upgraded the ram when I installed 7)
Thanks for the feedback!

3gb of RAM, unsure of the video card. Am planning to upgrade this week, so will see how it goes.

Cheers.

3GB of ram is fine. To be honest, Win7 scales better with hardware than Vista, so you simply won't have the fancy (read: useless) graphical effects.

I'm a linux geek. Kubuntu is my my easy install, but I roll my own when I need something with a dedicated purpose. However, I also do video and audio editing at home.... and for audio, I have a great linux workstation. Paired up with an M Audio Delta 1010, a Media Matrix mic pre, and a cheap tube based mic pre, and I can do my surround sound experiments and ideas.

However, for video, I still like my Mac. It does a great job of working with quick video edits, especially just grabbing DV and making a quick DVD or divx file out of.

For work, there is alot I can get done in Linux or on my Mac. Not everything though, I need AutoCAD. No, it doesn't run well in wine, not since 2000. No, other CADD apps are not an option, compatibility with clients is a must. So... I have a Windows machine for that.

That machine came with Vista, and I tried it for a week. I couldn't stand it, replaced it with XP, and I was content again. I ran into an issue.... and... well, perfect time to test out Win7... and I won't be going back to XP. Win7 has become my new favorite windows install on any new machine, hands down.

So from someone who uses an OS based on what I do with it... Win7 is my favorite version of Windows yet. Now if AutoDesk would make a Linux version..... I'd drop Windows in a heartbeat :D

I apologize if this has been asked and answered, but can I upgrade from XP Pro to Win7 without reinstalling everything? I have a legit copy of Win7 w/ key sitting here and I haven't upgraded, because I don’t know if I could go threw yet another re-install. Each time I do it, it takes days of work to get everything installed and working again. :(

^^ no that wont be possible to my knowlege.

Anyway, upgrading is a good oportunity to get a "fresh start" with your system. Re-installing everything shouldn't really take that long unless you have a bazillion things, however, my setups only really have about 20 programs. I install all the no-brainer ones right away, and then I install other's as needed.

Plus all the free apps you run you get the latest version for sure :)

Honestly I usually format my pc and reinstall everything at least once a year just to keep everything fresh.

External massive harddrives are pretty cheap these days, just pick one up, back up your "files" (not programs), dont forget to get the appdata folder stuff from your user directory, for insance your mozilla firefox, google chrome, etc. settings / bookmarks are all located there. If you are unsure how to back up your "settings" for a program, just google it ;)

I just got my free copy of 7 today. I can't wait to upgrade to the full version. Up till about 3 weeks ago I had never even touched Vista. Honestly, I like it. I havent had any problems at all. But I know 7 is way superior. I got to play with it when it was beta and LOVED it. Infact I got a new computer just cause the one before this one was too ancient. But now I am rockin a quad core 64 bit. I have more computer than i know what to do with :) I just get nervous when upgrading, ME was a POA to upgrade and when i went to XP I lost EVERYTHING. Hopefully all goes well. See you on the other side.

I hopped onto the Mac bandwagon about 4 years ago, however I missed playing my games so I bought a new pc in Febuary. I ran the RC of Win 7 up until the day of release. Install took me about 20 mins, ran my install off my USB Flashdrive...

I never had any problems with the RC. Windows 7 x64 runs really well on this quad core machine and its fast. I highly recommend the upgrade if you have the machine to run it. Very stable.

Side note: I still love my iMac and my Macbook but really only use the Macbook now when I need something portable. The iMac sits and collects dust. :(

I'm very happy with 7. Ran the RC for about 6 months. Switched to full version about a month ago. You may not see the performance increase from vista. But I gained about 50FPS in some of the games I play making the switch. It's faster than XP too from my experience. I went looking for the defrag tool too on 7. When I found it turns out I didn't need it. It had been running once a week on all drives since I installed :D A massive massive improvement from vista speed wise. And definitely not a step down from XP. It's not a bad OS, for sure.

Naaaah its not running out of memory! I only have 2 gigabytes installed and performance is perfect! It eats 1 gigabyte but it seems to give it up when needed :) Only time it bothered me was sometimes starting Flight sim 2004 with firefox running said not enough memory to run but there was no slowdown!

That's good to know, in case I decide to ever get Windows 7. .And I know what you mean about Firefox, it's a RAM hog..

Squid,
Click on the start button, then open all programs. Scroll down to 'Accessories' and click on it. Scroll down to 'System Tools' and click on that. Then scroll down to 'Disk Defragmenter.' I pinned the program to the desktop, since I like to Defrag weekly. Yes, I sure miss XP. In fact I still miss 3.x

or type disk defrag in the 'Start' Search. :)

Hehe the amount of times I have to tell people just type what you want into the box! Wanna change your default printer? "Ermm yes you go to control..." nope! Simply type Printer into the search box!

I like that lil search box!

hit the Windows key on your keyboard, start typing...bam! I like it very much.
