I've used essential oils in the past. Wintergreen oil must come with a childproof cap, by law, as it is considered to be toxic. Also, I know that essential oils, if dripped onto wood furniture, will eat away the finish (ask me how I know? :D).

So I wonder if, due to the large amount you used (40%), it really was the wintergreen oil that ate away at your fill and cart.
