Shortyjacobs,

Would you anecdotally estimate how much worse the wicking is after untwisting and retwisting the rope? Is it all the way back down to SS mesh territory or just not quite as good as unadulterated SS rope?

I'd say "just not quite as good", but honestly it's tough to substantiate. I've yet to try a head to head comparison, (make two wicks, one with torching and one with unwrapping, then test them with equal wraps of fresh wire, on the same mod, with the same batt....or even just do a wicking test of both in a small container).

It may all be in my head...

Gotcha, thanks. Then in that case I'll be doing the unwrap and wrap it back up for my first try at the rope tonight. I'd rather just get that thread out instead of burning it and if it's just a little bit less, unquantifiably, awesome then it'll probably be plenty awesome enough for this guy, lol.

Not trying to hijack, but have any of you guys read anything up on the SS mesh sleeving here? McMaster-Carr (top right)

Wouldn't that be an amazing medium for wicking? Can someone tell me I'm stupid? If not, I may want to buy some to try out.

The smallest stuff is 1/4" ID, (SS sleeving), with wall diameter it's at least 0.27". That's a BIG wick hole. Of course, the question is if you can fold the sleeving axially to take out some of the internal space and make it fit into a 1/8" or less wick hole.....could work, give it a shot.

Reporting another success with 7*7 316ss :)

I'm not great at wrapping coils but ended up with a good 1.2ohm coil. Wrapped 4/3 with 30g Kanthal.
This is the first time my drip tip has gotten hot while vaping, and I've been using a 1ohm coil all week. However this is also the first time I've been able to pull 8-10 good puffs consecutively without losing any flavor or vapor. I'm able to vape the wick dry if I hold it upright and chain vape it but it wets right back up in just a few seconds. So it's basically able to wick faster than I need it to.

I wish I had some 28g on hand or better yet some ribbon. I may shoot for .8 or .9ohm with a 3/2 wrap while I wait on MOAR VAPEMAIL :p

Just double up and twist your 30g. It will give you about half the resistance of a single strand.

I've used small diameter sleeving with tightly rolled 500SS mesh core, works well but not any better than mesh alone I'd say

Why are you guys taking it apart to remove the thread if torching it seems to work better? less work + works better > more work + less effective

Because a shiny raw stainless wick looks good in an AGA- especially if you have XS-18 or EkoWool sitting on top as an insulator and have no need for torching or oxidizing!

PS- Got my XS-18 from KidneyPuncher, stuffs a bit expensive but it works really well. I wrapped it 5/4 with 0.5x0.1 ribbon for 1.7 ohms for my VV and again with a 3/4 wrap of 0.8x0.1 for 0.8 ohms on my Mechanical. Stuff vapes like a champ but doesn't seem to whiten up with a dry burn like silica does on a dripper. Still amazing flavor and vapor, just would suggest a little hand held windproof lighter for cleaning.

Anyone else notice that gennies seem to mute the flavor a bit compared to a good dripper setup? Also I tend to get less vapor on an A7 setup exactly like an IGO-S. These RBAs all have a sweet spot and it's fun to experiment lol.
