hey drew,

i used 20g stranded on my first mod

seemed a little thick but its the smallest i can get at work (for cost)

which is preferred...stranded or solid and what are the major differences when used in modding

thanks, gervis

For this type of application, there really isn't a lot of difference between solid and stranded. It's more a preference of what you like to work with; stranded wire can be a bit messy (and sucks up a lot of solder) so I prefer solid wire just for the convenience. (Also stranded wire can leave "stray hairs", etc). Stranded wire is better at high frequencies (we don't care) and also handles repeated flexing a lot better, so if the wire needs to move, I'd recommend stranded (like if you have a slide-out carto arrangement or something). This is the major reason most cables use stranded wire. (The other reason, for mass-produced cables and such is that a break in one wire of a stranded cable goes unnoticed; a break in a solid wire means DOA).

Anime...since current flows more along the outside of a conductor...stranded wire can carry more current due to its higher surface area than solid. And color of the insulation has no effect on anything.

I dont use high power mods and I pulse the button a lot so thats why I have gotten away with it...but like the other said..use 18-20awg to be safe.

If you have a commercial building being built or remodeled nearby check the dumpster...I got a crapload of leftover 18awg security/intercom they thew away. Those guys will use 20 feet off a new spool and throw the rest away.
