Source for 24awg wire?

I went to Radio Shack, and the smallest wire they have is 22 AWG (they have 24, but it's solid copper). It seems the wire you normally get in a battery box is 24awg, but I'll be damned if I can find it for sale.

Any ideas? I looked at digikey.com, but it seems they only sell in 100' lengths and it's kinda pricey as well. (Or I probably was looking at the wrong stuff...as usual).

alternately, something like standard speaker wire, the smaller stuff, perhaps?

The stranded stuff looks good, pretty much what I was looking for. Radio shack had the speaker wire type stuff too, but I like the colored wire....just helps keep things neat between positive and negative connections.

Look for magnet wire at mouser.com. The covering on magnet wire is heat resistant. Also, you don't have to strip it because it has flux in the covering - just burn it with your soldering iron - covering and all - and it will solder. I bought a small roll there for 6 or 8 bucks.

Try Jameco, Allied, or Newark...... Jameco is a company that somewhat caters to the smaller guy, and they do have rolls of varying length of many types of wire. Always have had great service from them.

Here you can get tinned solid and I use 26 gauge... works great on the Tekks!

I think solid wire is better than stranded since you can mold it easier.

I use CAT5 cable wire...its solid 24ga...phone cable is 26ga.

If the wire is going to be flexed quite a bit, you may want to use stranded wire. It can take frequent bending much better than solid wire. It's just a little more of a pain to get it tinned and you need to watch for stray wires that can cause shorts.

Bahnzo, if you need some wire I have a ton of it in my garage and am frequently up your way. I will give you some just to get it out of my garage lol. I will PM you next time I am headed up there. My parents live in the same town as you.

In my experience cat5 is solid and phone cable is stranded. Depends what you want...

Be careful with phone wires. The conductors are sometimes wrapped around a cloth type center. It really depends on the phone cable you have. Always strip it and check it first. But phone cables are always stranded in my experience. Some are much better than others.
