Before connecting two batteries in parallel:
The batteries MUST have the same degree of charge.
Must be of about the same mah capacity and age.
Verify circuit, and do resistance check to verify no shorts prior to hooking up the batteries.
Positive to positive, and negative to negative should not produce any spectacular results :)

Violate any one of the above, and start shopping for new batteries.

Sorry

I must have screwed something up, Everything was brand new and freshly charged.
Do batts sometimes cook-off when new? A couple of seconds after inserting into mod
one of the batts had split its casing and started "hissing", before I could get the batts
out the second one had split and was also hissing.

You guys might want to give NiZn AA batteries a try instead of NiMh. They have a nominal voltage of 1.6V per cell instead of 1.2V! And they have a much higher discharge rating than NiMh.

Some have tried them...last I heard the production is ahead of the technology. i.e. they don't last very long, after a few recharges they are kaput. Although I do, on occasion, think about ordering some. :D
