Hi there

Smoked my last analogue ciggie at lunchtime Sunday. vaping with 6mg juice which I realise now probably isn't strong enough since I was a PAD smoker with ultra-lights. Anyway, I'm committed to not going back to smokes so I'm going to persist, but was wondering if there's any suggestions on how to handle the insomnia / sleep disturbances?

Basically, I wake every 60-90 mins during the night. I get up, have a quick vape, drink of water and toilet break (that's another thing - I seem to need to go a LOT more) and get back to sleep okay ... I just can't stay asleep for very long.

Any ideas on how to get through this patch or how long it's likely to last? Should I try not to vape during the night maybe? I always used to smoke at night when I would wake up, so figured it might be best to keep that habit intact.

Any help much appreciated.

hi madnaomi and welcome to the forum. I read on here that one method is to keep another tank or clearomizer with a higher nic level for those times the craving hits hard. It might help you to try this before bed or at night. I tried this method and it worked for me (only lasted a week and I was balanced, and I used a flavor I wasn't crazy about too). It's also been said that vape is dehydrating and drinking lots of fluids is helpful. I know I drink lots more water. Good luck in your journey and congrats on quitting.

Actually, if you smoked ultra-lights, 6mg *should* be plenty but you might want to try a bump up to 12mg.

If that is too much you can mix equal parts 6mg and 12mg of the same juice to get 9mg. :) The latter seems like it would be good.

you do NOT want to vape higher nic at night before you go to bed though. I would stick w/3 for that. All this will get easier in 7-10 days.

I say 6mg should be fine because I "over-nicked" a newbie last year who smoked ultra lights, but she didn't tell me that til after I let her try my vape, which was 14mg, and she got very dizzy and almost fell off her chair.

I don't want to give bad advice so I'll clarify. When I used the higher nic level it wasn't to vape, but to take one draw. I probably should have suggested the 12 as the higher nic, but Racehorse is correct, 6mg sounds like your level. I smoked the orange wrapped packs (which was the lightest available here) and tried to start at 6. Struggled. When I moved up to 12 I put the cigs down for good. I kept an 18 for the bad craving times. Within a month I am dropped to 10 or less and now ordering my juice in 6 because I desire to cut back. It's what worked for me.

Hi madnaomi and welcome to ECF!

You're getting sleepy - very, very sleepy .......

Seriously, though this is one of the common symptoms of quitting cigarettes, and it will pass in time. For some, it's just a matter of a week or two, and for others, it's a bit longer.

Hang in there and Happy Vaping!

Too much nic at night can also keep you up imo.

Don't be afraid to keep some high strength and some low strength juices; better yet to have a separate tank just for high strength so you can take an occasional toke to keep away the cravings, and use the low strength the rest of the time.

I had sleeplessness in the beginning...it gets better.

My theory was that I was breathing better and just seemed to have a lot more energy, so I just wasn't as tired at night. Of course it may have been that I was just so darned excited at having stopped smoking after 40 years.

I also found that caffeine and sugar were having more effect on me after removing all the chemicals from cigarette smoke from my system.

About the urination...yeah, that's kind of a side issue to staying hydrated. But, I'm an old guy who seems to get up every couple of hours to pee and wander around the house, so what would I know.

I agree with others that it might help to use higher nic during the day and lower nic in the evening.

I could not sleep after quitting smoking after 42 years so I am on 25mg sleeping pills. Sleep like a baby now. I always was a light sleeper even when smoking. Health is a lot better and feel better now so if I have to take one a night for the rest of my life so be it. It is the only pill or medication I take. CHEERS!

I also was smoking about a PAD of ultra lights when I quit cold turkey for vaping. I started on 12 mg for a few weeks then went to 10, then 8 after about a month. Stayed there for over 2 months and just now went to 6mg. And I have some irritability symptoms I'm working through. And I chain Vape a bit. You may want to bump up your nic level.

I guess I'm the exception to this I find that I sleep better and feel more refreshed when I awaken in the AM and I don't sleep near as much as I did when I smoked. I also haven't had a migraine since hanging up the 2.5 packs of camels a day and my zippo. 30+ years of that behind me and I don't miss it for anything. I wish they had developed this 20 some years ago. I haven't felt this good in a couple decades and my annual physical reflects it my blood pressure is the best it has ever been I haven't had vitals this good since high school when I was in football and wrestling. Now I want to buy a bike and start riding to take some weight off and get back in shape. My friends said I would have troubles sleeping I just found that I got better quality sleep but I just didn't require as much of it at a time.

I started out on 18 mg and I would chain vape before going to bed. Had the same problem... waking up every 90 minutes or so, frequent trips to the bathroom (straight menthol needs a LOT of hydration). It took me about 3 weeks or so to level out. I'm down to 12mg now but still chain vape before bed. Now I find I generally wake up about 90 minutes after I go to sleep, but I don't have to hit the head every time. And I only seem to wake up once a night. Most nights I just turn over and go back to sleep. And I get better sleep now than I did while smoking.
