Will do that tonight no doubt just to be sure.

@SteamStack The wood looks fine to me from your pic. If you use mineral oil and/or the Howards stuff regularly, your woody will be fine.
I think what you feel in your hand is just the natural state of the wood.
If you want the woody to feel smoother in your hand, you could give it a sanding with some fine grit. I'd use a sanding sponge or just some fine grit paper in your hand. I'd start with 220 or 320 grit and work your way up until it's as smooth as you want it to be. In case you don't know, be sure to sand in the direction of the grain, and clean off the wood before moving to the next grit. I wouldn't go higher than 400 grit myself, if you go too high, the wood won't take much oil and/or wax very well.
True.. if that's how it is then I'll live with it, it just sets off alarms in my head thst it's dry.
My other 2 bare oil mods are like butter smooth.
Would love to upload the files of the mod as I seen them before or link to the photo bucket page.. just not sure the seller would appreciate it.. no idea.
Should get rob to take a look as the end caps seem strange to be with the whst looks like sanding marks? that cross the grain? Is thst natrual or that's the direction the wood was cut down.. no idea haha
From your pics, it looks like normal end grain to me. If you were seeing sanding and/or milling marks, it should be painfully obvious. You can try sanding the end grain too, but it will always have that pattern to it, but you may get it 'smoother'.Should get rob to take a look as the end caps seem strange to be with the whst looks like sanding marks? that cross the grain? @SteamStack here's my take. The guy probably oiled them up, and didn't buff them out when he took the pic, to make them look all shiny in the pic. Very common practice when photographing/presenting wood workings. The heat during shipping probably did cause some oil to come out, or he left a sheen of oil on them purposely to keep them oiled during shipping.
I think you're fine, just apply the oil/wax of your choice regularly.
I have a 2015 Purple Heart w/Birds Eye Maple door. The body feels a little rough on the curved edges, it's just the grain in the round-over. When I apply mineral oil and soak, it looks all super shiny. When I buff it out, it feels somewhat 'dry', but I like the 'in-the-hand-wood-feel".
Unless I'm not seeing something in the pics, if you google 'cherry end grain', you should see similar results.
By the way, it's a gorgeous piece! I remember seeing your wanted ad, glad you found one!!Yes I think your right as the guy did say he oiled them. He also makes wood drip tips and mods in the past so I'm wouldn't surprise me if the woods are oiled durring the pics.
Its cherry if you want it to feel really smooth you have to hit it with some super fine sandpaper or a micro mesh sponge and oil it . Cherry is much softer then say jatoba . If someone with damp hands handles it enough this will cause the grain to raise . It can be made to feel super smooth and it will stay that way once you work the wood .
If you want a piece of wood to feel like glass pick up this kit

Yes, looks very natural to me. Don't be afraid to sand it, it's just wood, as long as you follow the direction of the grain, you can't mess it up. End grain doesn't have a direction, so no worries on the ends. You could sand the end grain finer than the body if you want.
Cherry doesn't have much of a prominent grain to pop, but a smoother surface may allow the oil to stay more on the surface and provide a better sheen to help the grain pop.
A darker oil, such as linseed oil or tung oil will pop the grain more than mineral oil, but they have an aroma to them that you may not like while vaping!
I would give it the mineral oil treatment daily until you're happy with it, then wax it if you want.

Yes it is normal for this type of wood . Your welcome to send the mod to me I can sand it down for you if your not comfortable doing it .Ok so the end grain is natural on this then?
Guess I'll try it for a few and see if I wana risk it and hit it with sand paper. If I do will the grain pop more in the end or stay faded away?
