I've been using cotton because I don't like the taste of burnt silica, but cotton has its own issues (I chain-vape all day and drip 90% of the time). I wind up changing it out at least once a day.

Finally bit the bullet and ordered some Ready Wick ceramic wick (XC-116) from rba Supplies, since they pre-treat it to get all of the things that will kill you off of it. It is NOT CHEAP but I got a couple of feet on faith.

Popped it in my Forge clone this morning and I'm sold. Had a few "off" hits the first couple of hits and then it settled down. I love this stuff! I can vape it until it's dry and I get the faint taste of the coil, but not the wick. The flavor doesn't change throughout the vape, just gets fainter at the end. We'll see how it goes but from initial impressions, this is going to go in all of my drippers from now on, price be damned.

Edit: 5 hours in, this wick is still clean as a whistle. I'm a believer :D

Considering how many will spend multiple hundreds of dollars on mods and atomizers, I don't see why xc -116 is considered expensive. It lasts a really long time too, so it's not as if you're throwing money away.

Yup, I just ordered 3 more feet and expect it will last us quite a while. When I say it's not cheap, I mean in comparison to silica or cotton. Last night I pulled the piece out of my dripper and torched it clean and it's as good as new - it didn't fray or lose its shape. I'm a believer, it's going into all of our drippers and atties from now on.

Having disavowed silica a while back in favor of cotton builds, the XC-116 for RBA Supplies piqued my interest, so I bought two feet. I'm sold on it!

What I've been doing is building a micro or nano-coil in one of my two Taifun GT clones from FT (I love them, by the way). I'll thread cotton through the coil and use XC-116 as a so-called "flavor wick" on top of the coil - sort of like what Phil Busardo does with ekowool above mesh, but XC-116 above cotton. I tried it above mesh for adequate results, but using it above cotton has been a real winner. I'll replace the cotton per usual, but I keep using the same XC-116 over and over again - and absolutely NO silica taste. Good stuff.

I've tried XC-116 in drippers, too, but so far the best use for it - to me - is with the Taifun GT as a "flavor wick." I haven't tried it in my Kayfun/R91 clones, either - it just makes more sense - to me - with the Taifun GT. I'll be getting a Fogger 3 soon, so maybe that will be another place to use it.

Regardless, now that I've found a use for it, I'm quite impressed. I had been using an organic cotton & hemp blended yarn as a "flavor wick" prior to using XC-116, but it did not seem to last as long before needing to be replaced. I'm guessing that the cotton w/ XC-116 lasts 50% longer - let's say 3 tanks instead of 2 before needing to replace the cotton.

My 2 cents...
