We'll double check the permissions, but generally if the forum is not publicly accessible by a guest, it won't be shareable.

We'll have to build a conditional that removes the share buttons from forums that are generally not accessible to guests. However, any publicly accessible page that isn't private or have restrictions as to who can see them will be shareable.

@ "AttyPops" - THANK YOU ! ! !

That is exactly what I was asking and referring too . . . However, given the responses I have already been given about this situation, I will have to rethink about posting any personal information so freely here on ECF (as I think others will too) and that now can be shared so readily without permission by the original author on all the "Social Media" sites . . .

Now - Although others may not be worried, nor "concerned" about "Stuff" being "Shared" as freely - I AM . . . That is the main reason why anything I do on "FB" is extremely limited (which is now only used for "e-Cig" "Stuff" - I even use a "Missed Spelled" name that hopefully cannot be found easily) and "My" privacy settings are - NOT Shared "Publicly" at all . . . AND - Why I refuse to "Google+", "Twitter", or any other "Social Media" which are so intrusive into people's personal life . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Anyway, I think I am going to stay out of any further discussion or give any input here about this or anything else dealing with the change over to the new system, I don't want ECF Administration to think I am trying to stir the pot or causing trouble about what they want and have already decided to do . . .

All I wish ECF Administration with the change over is - GOOD LUCK ;)

Thank you for making me realize that millions of people now know that I wick my more stubborn atties naked while running around the table growling. :D

Personally I consider ECF as a big family (including those uncles every family has) and while this should be good, it occasionally makes us forget that Google indexes everything on this forum so everything is publicly available.... We post without realizing it's now out there for everyone to see.

Oh dear... [emoji14]

@ "reitred1" - SIR - With all due respect, as I mentioned I am staying out of any further conversation dealing with this, especially given that fact that I especially already know about "Google" and not posting personal things that I would rather not share with others on the Internet (I am an older person - 60+ and not a new person to the pitfalls of the Internet . . . AND - I am just one of many people that has used DOS in it's infancy and posted to Chat rooms {like in alt.com} and threads before) . . .

"My" real concern was that what is posted (both past and present) on ECF could be shared on "Social Media" sites so much easier via ECF once the new system and "Social Media" links have been implemented . . . That's all . . .

Again, THANK YOU and the rest of ECF Administration for all Ya' are doing and I wish for the best and easiest "Transition" . . . :D GOOD LUCK ! ! !

I feel better knowing the buttons won't be in the OUTSIDE forums. I can get carried away anywhere, but especially there.

Nah...that never happens....

;)
I assume that the security around non-public forums will be in place BEFORE cut-over. For google-search too.
Sounds like a big job, and a lot of data to import/test/convert

Cross-posted from #8, The Blog Function . . . for info on topics more general here...

@rolygate, @spencer87…good evening.

I gather then the blog function will be retained. But will it be parallel to the general migration or will there be some ramp up time?

While I have your attention, I heard jokingly that members with over 10k posts will be cut-off. Funny way of putting it but will there be a limit to history retained. If so, will it be based on date or other criteria, e.g. post count? PM's we should retain or back-up ourselves as the format architecture is different. Anything else?

With conversations PM limits will be gone. Will image/media limits also?

Grateful for your advice.

Good luck.

:)

Blogs will be retained and immediately usable once the new site is opened up for use. I'd recommend saving your PMs as Conversations handle them completely differently.

And yes, there will still be limits on the number of conversations and images you may store.

Most concerned on determining if there's going to be a cut-off date for existing posts and images. If so I would like to conserve as much as possible as thereafter these may not be recoverable?

Not much time left for us to preserve important posts. So when would be the earliest cut-off do you think?

Thanks in advance.

while i share uncle's aversion to all that ''sharing'' and will appreciate having those buttons removed from the non-public forums let's not forget that there has always been 'copy and paste'
if any 'outsider' or 'verified member' feels he/she wants to let the world know what's going on with you, he/she was always able to do it ;) it might be against ecf regulations but who is gonna be the wiser? i appreciate whatever ecf can do to make it less easy but in the end it's up to us.

so:
if you don't want it shared with millions of users in any form or fashion, don't put it out there to begin with.

We'll post a prominent announcement with links to twitter, facebook and live chat so folks can keep tabs on the progress and when the site will actually stop allowing posts.

Our current line of thinking is to leave ECF up so people can still search for information, but there'll be no posting allowed during the conversion process so when the new ECF goes live, we won't have lost any posts.

That's good news. I love parallel operation (as a user). Don't envy ya's none.

PM's nada. Got that, thanks.

Let me rephrase my earlier question though…How far back might users' posts and images be retained?

Curiousity has its own reason for existing.

Thanks.

:)
