Isn't the the sort of regulation called for in the article what we're mostly in support of here?

"regulate electronic cigarettes to address their marketing, ingredients and sale to minors"

Age restrictions aren't controversial. I don't know of any retailer that doesn't already apply them.

I think that we call all agree that standards for ingredients -- from restrictions on certain (harmful) additives to standards for testing and record-keeping are certainly in the best interest of consumers. I would assume that any reputable company already has strict standards in place.

We can debate endlessly on marketing. I'll bet we can agree that limiting some health-related claims is beneficial to consumers. (I say "some" as claims like 'safer than tobacco cigarettes' are very important and should be not only be allowed, but required.) I think we can also agree that marketing to children and teens should be restricted, though the industry, again, has already held themselves to that standard.

On fruit and candy flavors, well, I don't think I can fully express my opinion on flavor restrictions without violating forum rules. That's going too far.

If eCigs are easily available to minors, it is because big tobacco is making the stores do so. The gas stations, for instance, are under contract. They can not sell competitive items, and they must display as they outline.
The stores or gas stations don't follow the mom n pop vendors proper protocol..... They follow big tobaccos.

And herein lies the problem. They claim the flavors ARE the marketing to children, that the only reason to HAVE flavors is to appeal to the kids.

Everywhere i go they dont sell E-cigs to minors.. They have signs, and i am very happy about that. However... I am old enough to remember a few things. Like when people smoked in every show in the open or at public places. Then they called for slightly tighter regulation, everyone said fine.. instantly no one under 18.. Good, right? Then no ads on Tv, then no smokes in commercials, then in most movies, then in most places of business, now in some places you cant smoke outside your own home (including in your car!). So! Even though i dont like stinky analogs anymore, I do believe the same exact thing will happen. I promote restriction of sale to minors. I promote listing every ingredient, But i also promote freedom, and not having to loose rights because someone had a stick up their... ...Nm :p

exactly, it is always just a foot in the door. I have difficultly believing the "targetting kids" arguement as it makes zero sense. Who are these people and where is the evidence? It doesnt exist. Kids don't have money, so no industry "targets" kids, they target parents to buy things for kids. NO ONE on this, or any other planet, is so stupid as to spend advertising $$$$ targeting those who can't buy their product. Its another ploy to get our money and freedoms.

Their "evidence" amounts to logical fallacies.

Kids like fruit and candy flavors
E-cigarettes are available in fruit and candy flavors.
Therefore, e-cigarettes are targeted at kids.

TV ads are aired during prime time.
Kids sometimes watch TV during prime time.
Therefore the TV ads are aimed at kids.

Fallacy of the single cause (causal oversimplification[26]) – it is assumed that there is one, simple cause of an outcome when in reality it may have been caused by a number of only jointly sufficient causes. List of fallacies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
