Cannot access the full paper for free but I looked at the original abstract, which doesn't provide much experimental details. However, other former studies showed different results:
- Exposure to ecig vapor extracts does not promote significant cell death in vitro
- Lung exposure to vapor show minor changes in inflammatory makers relative to cigarettes exposure
- PG has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties
From the starting statement "20 % of Americans ages 25-44 now using these drug delivery devices" without mentioning that many also stopped cigarettes.
Cautious in their conclusion "These data suggest that e-cigarettes may be toxic to airway cells, suppress host defenses, and promote inflammation over time, while also promoting virulence of colonizing bacteria." Generalizing the conclusion to bacteria while the study was only performed on Staphylococcus aureus, which is also a part of normal flora...
I don't want to make it seem that vaping is risk free, but the substance of these studies are poorly informative and inconsistent with one another. Starting a study with the "Vaping is bad" premise is bias for the least and certainly not very original nor challenging...
Note that this paper is sold for $40, with 12 co-authors for such a limited study I wonder if all are well aware of the scientific details.... One thing is sure, the journal is expecting to make a profit on a hot topic...
Edit just to say that promoting inflammation and decreasing immunity are inconsistent with each other because infection, among other things (allergens...) promote inflammation. If vaping would decrease immunity, the expected result would be a decrease of inflammation, which could be expected since nicotine is an anti-inflammatory substance used to treat some inflammatory syndromes.... I hate that screwed science that everyone talks about like "The Scientists Found" like they are superior minds, and I've seen that trend in other topics. Thank you for breaking that link.
