I don't know about the DNA40/DNA200, but the SX350J has been tested accurate with a $10,000 FLIR in public at a trade show. Unless you have such equipment, how would you know which is accurate? I haven't seen any such tests with the DNA40, but it was the first temperature control chip out there, and people do notice a difference between it and the J-chip, and with the J-chip being tested accurate, draw your own conclusions. I would expect the second generation dna chip to be better than the DNA40, so assuming both J-chip and DNA200 are accurate, it all comes down to what you're looking for. Both are fairly equal feature-wise, now that the DNA200 lets you update firmware, which was a MAJOR drawback on previous models. The screen scramble issue with the DNA40 was determined NOT to be the fault of the DNA40 chipset, but rather the screen, as the same screen in a $300 flashlight did the same thing. Evolv did a firmware fix to detect and refresh this issue, and left that code in the DNA200, so I wouldn't expect any issues with the DNA200 - Evolv have an excellent track record before the DNA40 fiasco, and that wasn't even their fault. You indicated you're a modder, so the major difference is box size.

SX350J - 1x18650 = 60W (70W in "powerful" mode); 2x18680's = 150W
DNA200 - 3x18650's (required) = 200W, so you'll need to build a larger box.

Both are pushing the amp limits of any 18650 though.
60W @ 3.3V left on the battery = 20A
120W, 2x batteries = 20A (so 150W is pushing it)
180W, 3x batteries = 20A (so 200W is pushing it)

I'm trying not to be biased, but I do own an SXmini S-class, and an SXmini M-class, and haven't had any issues with either one. I've updated firmware a number of times without issues. It's almost a draw at this point really (though the DNA200 isn't in the wild yet). Either one are hot sellers, so if you get one of each to compare, you shouldn't have any problem selling either one.

Are there any sx350j mods with a user serviceable lipo battery like the new dna200s will be? Would rather get into that than a dna200

If you want to be completely agnostic, as I intend to be, start paying attention to Cloudmaker FB and Cloudmaker reddit.

Will be able to take the DNA 200, the 350J, and their own Ares chip. It's vaporware at the moment. Pun intended... But we should see stirrings of an actual production mod in 10 days or so.

Got the sx350j on sale and the I bought this 3d printed mod, sled, and fat daddy 510 for 35+ at vaposphere. A few bits of wire and a chip (sold at the site) and you're golden. They print the mod themselves, while this pick is HDR and doesn't reflect how it shows up normally, I'd recommend the blue as he had problems with this purple.

Is that just a precaution or are they using the same screen manufacturers

I will be staying well away from the dna200 until its been given the all clear by early adopters

Agree, while their implementation of firmware updates is basically a mandatory feature IMO in the market today, if there are bugs or flaws in the hardware design that will only provide "Potential" ability to fix them with firmware updates. I think there are some under the impression that any and all problems can be overcome with a firmware update which just isn't always true.

And not knowing what if any "Test Plan" the beta testers have to go from and the ability to customize so many different variety's of setups it's most likely we'll see certain combinations of settings that were never tested until released to the market. A good couple months should shake most of that out IMO.

I am on the fence on buying a sx350j or waiting for evolv's newest creation.
Tempted to get the sxj just so i can compare it to dna 40

You'd probably be better off waiting and comparing their new board to the SX350j. There really isn't much to compare the DNA 40 with the SX350j. DNA 40 is very basic, short on features and power output. But they appear to have added many new features to the new board and increased the power output to be more comparable to the SX350j.

There is a thread comparing the two however. If you can weed out all the bs.

The SX350J certainly has more "features", but the DNA40 is hardly "very basic". Evolv was able to put a whole lot on the form factor of the DNA 20/30 board with the DNA40. I would apply "very basic" to perhaps an iStick 20 board, but certainly not the DNA40.

While the statement is subjective I was responding to a poster that was wanting to compare the two boards. And in comparison the DNA is very basic. If you follow the link I posted you would see why I've formed this opinion.

That chart is certainly designed to showcase the additional features of the SX350J (and I own one so I'm not biased here) and I would agree with an assertion that it is more feature rich, but I stand by the contention that from an engineering perspective you cannot say the DNA40 is "very basic". Nothing subjective about it.

All of this is very interesting to me though i am not very tech savey. Heath kits as a youth was about my level. The question i am interested in is the issue of TC with Kanthal wire. Why is there no effort to create a curve that will address that wire. Is it the fact that the resistance variation curves are too erratic or unstable or the opposite i.e. ;too linear? It would seem like a desirable addition since that is the most popular wire being used. I have been impressed that the German and other European developers have a so called Nickel Pure function that is scaled so that one can perhaps customize to any wire that is being used. An additional area that is a bit confusing is the need for ambient temp being necessary to lock in for accurate curve structure. Could anyone shed more light on this for me. Thanks in advance for any answers. Really enjoying this discussion. Regards, AlaskaVaper

the resistance change is so small on kanthal when heated afaik no one has built a board that accurate yet
dna40, sx350j, china clones just need attie and mod to be at the same temperature
but for some strange reason the dicodes need to be at an ambient of 20c
cant see why as surely they have a board temp sensor, maybe they have just found its more accurate if set at that board & attie temp

Thanks for commenting. I understand the reasoning on curve linearity but even if Kanthat is most linear of the lot i still do not understand why there is not enough of a difference at high temps to prevent the burning of wicking material. I would love to see the actual resistance curve for Kanthal as it rises in temp. One would think at least a cap could be place that would reduce the extremes tha can occur. I guess the burnt taste from drying wicks is signal enough, lol
