Yup.

So yesterday I went to go buy my IPV3 (I'm relatively satisfied, but I made another thread about an issue), and I was told I can't vape.

When I got to the vape shop (before being told I couldn't vape) I did what I usually do, sat down (the employees were helping other customers), pulled out my mod and dripped some drops, and took a nice relaxing sigh/puff. Nothing beats the, "You're on common ground" feeling you get in a vape shop..

I took a second puff, not an obnoxiously large cloud or anything, and the guy behind the counter stopped talking to customers and said, "You can't do that here." I smiled and chuckled, and said something to the extent of, "Can't vape in a vape shop, good one."

Then he looked at me more seriously and said, "No. You can't vape in here. New rule. No samples, no vaping inside, no nothing. Inspectors have been frequently coming in, and we got a $3500 fine for vaping inside." I literally stepped back, and made, what felt like, one of the most shocked expressions ever. He went on to explain some other stuff I didn't understand, and another customer turned to me to confirm that it indeed sucks. I was essentially told that something was happening that would allow us to vape inside again soon, although I didn't quite understand what.

So what the hell? Has anyone had a similar experience? This wasn't vaping in a public place, a airport or the mall or anything.. This was a vape shop.

By the way I shoulda prefaced this by saying I live in New Jersey, US.

Despite being a privately owned property government entities can decide what you can and cannot do on property you own if it is accessible by the general public. The same laws have been passed in Marion County in Indiana (Indianapolis), you cannot vape in a public space. Just another example of government looking out for you!

Was this place in the Phillipsburg Mall by chance? At that particular shop they received complaints from customers walking through the mall I guess. Unfortunately, Jersey has banned vaping in all places where smoking are banned and shopping malls do fall into that category. I hear they were planning on moving over to PA so they can continue to do business. It's hard to sell liquids when people can't sample them.

edit: Just noticed you said this wasn't in a shopping mall. That's insane!

New Jersey is pretty much in the top of the race for smog capitals of the U.S. and they worry about ecig vapor?

That's pretty funny ... can't vape in a vape shop! Can't buy a supersized soft drink in NY, either. Kinda makes me proud to live in GA. ;)

Weird!! Are people allowed to smoke cigars in cigar shops where you live?

Yep.

The guy was letting me know something about how soon the vape shop will be recognized as a "vapor bar" much like a cigar/cigarette bar or whatever. I don't know the exact stipulations.

You can't smoke anywhere indoors in NJ, other than cigarette/cigar bars/clubs.

I apologize for getting off topic.

However, I disagree when you say that it would be hard to sell liquids without being able to sample them first. If that was the case the entire online industry wouldn't be as successful as it is. There aren't many industries that allow you to go into their place of business and sample the product before making a purchase. Especially when it comes to consumables.

Ah. So then it's a license thing, like with a bar. I see.

Is this in Clifton, pompton lakes or parsippany by chance? I feel like I know which shop you're talking about. The one in Clifton actually would be facing being shut down if they continue to vape in there

Yep. They have locations in all 3 of those towns. I was in the Clifton one.

wow gotta love the good ole US of A ...that's NUTS!

Houston was really rabid when they followed Austin's suit and outlawed smoking in bars and eateries, even shutting down the last bastion of wonderful cigar bars (which is when I quit going to Babaloo here)

that's time to start a grass roots movement or something with local govt and fight that, I can't imagine not sitting around the bar NOT vaping at our local B&M then, it'd just be to buy our juice AND gear? pfft (I try juice before I buy it there, if I can get it there I do instead of ordering, if they'd had the iStick's for even a little more I'd gotten it there)

but that's CRAZY!

It's good guys. Love that place. We can still vape in the one in pompton but when a cop is close we have to stop. It sucks. But they are working on getting the rule/law amended. Not exactly sure how, but I know the owner is very involved with the cause

Yeah I wasn't sure about the kosherness of posting the store's name, but it was Good Guy Vapes in Clifton, NJ for anyone wondering (pretty fantastic shop, good prices, mostly knowledgeable staff).

I don't really understand, how is the law getting amended? The staff member who talked to me mentioned something about it, but I shrugged it off as being longer term than he was leading me to believe.

How come you can still vape in other NJ vape shops (ie: Liquid Lounge)?

It is a public space. Unless it is designated private, it is public.

The big concern I have had is when the government finally makes up its mind and starts regulating vaping as smoking... there may be a bunch of fines racked up by these shops for allowing smoking(vaping) in a public establishment. As you can see, 3500 bucks isn't chump change either.
