Kind of did it like a ladder ... or maybe not. Looking at Authentic Mechanicals and maybe a Provari also at this point (if I can find a sweet deal). I like to get them cheap enough to get my money back after I play with them for a little while.

I started with Green Smoke e cigs to buying my first bottle of juice when I found out I could refill them. That lasted one week after i got tired of trying to keep my batteries charged. A friend that had been through 8 different setups and ended on his Provari suggested to skip the progression and just get the Provari. I did with a couple of protanks and a couple of carto tanks and have been extremely pleased these past two months. I have also been using RBAs and a dripper on the Provari with no problems. I just purchased my first mech mod two weeks ago and love tweaking/modding it, it's the Sigelei 8w.
Blu to 1000mah Joyetech Twists with Kanger EVods/Protank minis. I really like where I'm at now. I may get a mod sometime down the road just to have one, but not out of any type of need. The SVD is at the top of my list of things I'd 'like' to have.

after fearing the battery would pop, i got a better ego-like battery with variable voltage, then started using vivi novas
then looked at BB's and got an SVD with iclear 30 and dct tanks
then turned into mechanical stuff (not really an upgrade as in power but sure as in quality) and got a GGTS (r2) used with many cartoms I dont even know the name of. then added a ufs. Then finally put an Ithaka upon it and now im happy (not gonna stop trying out other stuff though)

bought some cheap 808's... liked the ikenvape atomizers...a lot
Started making my own custom Estate pipes with auto cig wedged in.
Started making custom pipes with 18350's with auto triggers.
My pipes are awesome!
Bought a Davide mini rebuildable. little airy, but pretty nice piece. Coils are easy - takes almost every model.
Still making the pipes, but missing the variable voltage
Bought a ZMAX V5
Got it yesterday, works great (everything works great on this thing!), but the top cap doesn't come off. ...!? Black model has the top cap "welded" on by the paint.
Complained to the Vendor.
Waiting on vendor response.
Vendor says..too bad. That's how the black ones are. ...?
Replied to the vendor again. "please reconsider your position on this"
Who knows what's next. may take up smoking again from the frustration of having to deal with the vendor (kidding)
May just end up building/designing my own vv/vw mod next.
