I'm afraid I am woefully unprepared in the weapons department. A couple swords, an oar & a hatchet.
Guess I'd better keep on the lookout for an abandoned duffel on the side of the road.
I have a shopping list going;
Big shooting thingies with boxes of ammo
Big sharp cutting thingies
Wooden oar
Bigger mag lite
Beans
Flint
MREs
hairgel
rubber balls & napalm

Snarf! I'm liking the look of those two handed machetes mutt! I'm more than a little out of practice with the trench hawk though, is it still balanced for throwing? If worse comes to worse and you need something sharp, there's always sandstone laying around and if not, look for some flint. You'd be surprised at just how sharp a flint knife really is! All you need is flint, fire, and a nail to knap one out and something to wrap the handle with...

OH! and baking soda. Don't forget baking soda, it's not just baking and everyone forgets it!

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout. Speaking of . . . where is a good place to find a decent katana at a budget price? Full tang, folded, and a freaking handle that isn't going to fall off?

I've got the same one bookmarked. I like the two handed feature to it, and it looks like it gives it more balance. For a really great price too. Find Cold Steel Knives At Over 40% OFF at Cold Steel Knives Direct has lower prices than straight from the Cold Steel site too. Still, there's no beating a katana for strength and ability to slice through flesh and bone with less effort during those swarms.

Cold Steel is going to be your best bet for the same qualities that made the old folded katana what it was. Two types of steel forged together. Softer central core with a hard outer 'skin' for edge durability. This was the true secret to creating them centuries ago and the folds were more for removing impurities and evening out carbon distribution making the most out of the poor quality ores that were available to them. While they did separate the different quality ores and used the better for the outer edge, it would still be considered less than optimum by today's standards! Who made it, and their level of craftsmanship, also played a huge role. It's possible to find a 'true katana' for under $500, just not one that will match a Masamune...

I found a few on Amazon that seemed to be OK as far as the metal goes, just from reading the reviews and weeding out whether the reviewers knew what they were talking about. Almost every one had crap for everything else. I'm almost thinking I could just get a blade and finish the rest. The blade is all that matters to me, so long as it is done properly. I'd hate to keep sharpening a blade like I'd have to with the only battle worthy sword I have now. After four or five good whacks, I'd be just as good with an aluminum pipe, LOL.

I'm definitely getting that two-handed Kukri though. That video was nice. Now, on to picking a decent budget crossbow.

The problem with crossbows is that they are slow to re-load. The ones you see on TV where they bend them in half to c.o.c.k. them are out there, but they really dont have enough power. The hunting crossbow that my dad uses, you have to use a cocking string with pulleys on it to get it cocked back. It uses 22" bolts. Its a good quality one, but its also louder than you think when you fire it. I say if you can use a compound bow, get one of those. They are cheaper, lighter and more accurate than a crossbow. Plus you can fire more arrows quicker. And they make a cool little sling that fits most compound bows so carrying it is easy.
