VOOPOO ARGUS XT 100W KIT review by hittman

I have to say that I’m rather excited to be here with you today with a review of an actual mod/tank kit instead of another pod review. I don’t dislike pods but the market has become very saturated and I’ve reviewed a lot of pods. It’s a nice break to get a real mod/tank combination to break things up. So without further ado, I am here today to talk with you about the new Voopoo Argus XT 100W kit that was sent to me by Voopoo in order to provide a fair and honest review. Voopoo has come out with some really great products in the past so I have high hopes for this one. The XT mod is compatible with either 18650 or 21700 batteries and will deliver either 80 or 100 watts maximum depending on the battery installed. I personally think this is a smart and important feature. Too many times I’ve seen mods rated at 100 watts and only use an 18650 battery which in my opinion isn’t enough battery for 100 watts. The XT is powered by the Gene TT 2.0 chip and supports Smart, RBA, Turbo, and TC vaping modes. The XT is IP68 rated tri-proof and has a 3A Type C charging port with a dustproof cover. It also has the QS lock switch that I will talk about later.

The XT kit comes with the MATT Tank that has a liquid capacity of 6.5ml and has an easy top filling system. It uses a volcano crater structure design to prevent leakage and two way airflow for optimum DL vaping. The MATT Tank is compatible with the TPP series of coils.

INITIAL THOUGHTS:

Voopoo really did a nice job on the packaging for the XT. It is in a metal tin much like the container that the Argus II arrived in. There is a color sleeve over the metal tin with a color picture of the XT and a few features. Mine of course was marked as a sample.

Once the tin is opened, the Argus XT, Maat Tank, spare glass tank section, and the accessory box is visible in the plastic insert. Inside the accessory box is a USB-C charging cable and the two included TPP series coils. There is also an 18650 battery adapter already installed in the XT mod since it is capable of using a 21700 battery or and 18650 battery with the adapter.

I received the silver grey version for my review. I think it’s obvious why it’s called that but the padded leather like material on the sides is grey but the back stitched panel is green. On the left side of the mod is the GENE TT logo but there is no other branding on the right side. Stamped into the green material on the back is the ARGUS XT with a little triangle on the top that looks like a mountain or something. Near the top on the back side is a lanyard ring. I’ve never been a fan of lanyards myself and to me the XT seems rather big to be carrying it around on a lanyard.

1661385989091.png

It’s interesting to me that the 510 top plate was made to be the same shape as the mod. It is pretty large and will accommodate a tank with a base up to 28mm without overhang. The 510 center pin is gold plated and spring loaded.

The battery for the XT is loaded through the bottom of the mod via a hinged door. There is a door release with an arrow on it indicating which direction to slide it to open the door. I have also found it handy to slide this when inserting a battery to help it to close easier. Once opened for the first time you will find the 18650 adapter inside. I immediately removed it since I prefer to use 21700 batteries when I have the option. The only battery polarity marking is on the underneath side of the battery door contact.

The front of the XT is definitely the star of the show here. Near the top of the mod is the QS Lock Switch. When the switch is all the way to the left then it locks the device completely from adjustment and firing. In the center position it is unlocked and all controls are available. In the right position only the adjustment buttons are locked. I personally love this feature. It’s great to be able to just flip a switch and not have to worry about accidental adjustment or firing. It’s difficult to see in my picture but there is a symbol underneath each position of the switch to help you remember which position does what. There is a lock on the left, a dotted line in the middle, and a circle with a line on the right.

Below the QS Switch is the nice sized fire button that has a nice click and feel to it. The display screen is next followed by the +/- adjustment rocker switch. Near the bottom is a flip down cover that protects the USB-C charging/update port. It not only helps to maintain the IP68 rating but also gives the front of the mod a very clean and smooth appearance.

The display screen gives the following information.

  • SET WATTAGE
  • MODE OF OPERATION(SMART, RBA, TURBO, TC)
  • BATTERY LEVEL INDICATOR WITH PERCENTAGE DISPLAY
  • PUFF COUNTER
  • COIL RESISTANCE
  • OUTPUT VOLTAGE WHILE FIRING
  • LENGTH OF TIME OF CURRENT PUFF
Just like about every Voopoo mod that I remember trying, if you leave the XT sit for several minutes then go back to use it then you have to push the fire button twice to fire it. They have a built in safety so if it gets hit by accident once then it just wakes the mod up but doesn’t fire. I’m not a big fan of this feature but I understand why they do it.

The menu system for the XT and MT are the same and use the same Gene TT chipset. The menu and button operation are as follows.

  • Press the fire button five times to turn the mod on/off
  • Press the fire button and – button to do a puff counter reset if you don’t want to do it through the menu
  • Press the + and – buttons to enter the menu system where you can choose between Mode, Setting, About Device, and exit
  • In Mode selection you can choose between Smart, RBA, Turbo, or TC
  • In the Setting selection you can reset the puff counter, choose to adjust the screen brightness or change the display type
Each of the four modes is displayed in a different color.

  • Turbo = Red
  • Smart = Orange
  • RBA = Blue
  • TC = Green

Hopefully I have covered the XT mod well enough so we can now take a look at the MAAT tank that was included in the XT and MT kits but with different coils. The XT kit came with the TPP- DM1 at .15 ohms and the DM2 at .2 ohms while the XT came with the same DM2 .2 ohm coil but also included a DM4 which is .3 ohms.

As always, it’s definitely always a good idea to break down a tank as far as possible for cleaning so that’s what I did with the MAAT Tank. It comes with what I consider to be a very nice 810 drip tip with a stainless beauty ring on the bottom to match the tank. The o rings are on the tip on this one rather than inside the top cap. The top cap on this one is a little different than most bayonet style caps I’ve seen on most tanks where the center is how it locks in place. On the MAAT tank there is a lip sticking out on either side of the outside edge of the underneath side of the cap that locks onto the body of the tank with somewhere between 1/8 and ¼ of a turn. This can be seen in the second picture below.

The top of the fill ports is covered by a gasket with a small hole in each side. I know some people like these gaskets but I personally don’t. If you’ve ever tried to fill a tank with a gasket with a glass dropper then you know it makes quite the mess. However, I also use some 10 and 50ml dropper bottles that work fine with this type of fill system. The MAAT tank has a capacity of 6.5ml.

The TPP coils simply push into the bottom of the tank to seal and then the bottom cap that contains the airflow control is screwed on. The inside of the base has three gold plated contacts to help transfer the power from the mod to the tank. There is a complete range of TPP coils that can be used on the MAAT tank.

The airflow of the tank mimics the design of a volcano to prevent leakage. The actual airflow control on the base is rather different from other tanks I’ve seen. There are two metal sliders that protrude a little to make it easier to adjust the airflow. The two openings are quite wide and allow massive amounts of airflow. There are vertical lines on the airflow slider to help the user keep track of where it is set. Not really necessary but a nice feature none the less.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I feel like Voopoo has really hit the ball out of the park with the Argus XT kit. I have very much enjoyed testing it and plan on keeping it in rotation for some time to come. It is packed with features but easy to use and performs very well.

I tested both coils with the same 3mg liquid that I have used many times for testing review tanks. The .2 ohm coil rated for 40-60 watts worked very well for me at 45 watts with the airflow at about ¼ - 1/3 open. I did go as high as 48 but eventually went back to 45. The flavor production was very good and it provided large amounts of vapor.

Next I tried the .15 ohm coil rated for 60-80 watts. Honestly those high of settings are a little out of my comfort zone but did push it into the lower 60 range just to try it. I eventually settled back to 53 watts with the airflow about ¼ open and liked it very much there. Once again, the flavor was very good and even larger amounts of vapor were produced. I kind of prefer the .2 ohm coil because of the operating range but this one performed very well also. I don’t think you could go wrong with either one.

The XT mod itself is fantastic in my opinion. There was no trouble with accidental opening of the battery door even after a few fairly hard taps on my desk. I love the QS lock switch that allows me to quickly disable the adjustment buttons or the mod completely. If I had one complaint on the mod it would be the size of the font on the lower end of the display screen. My eyes aren’t getting any younger and in lower light I had difficulty seeing the bottom of the display. I feel like the wattage display could have been a little smaller to allow for the bottom information to be larger.

I almost never use the Smart mode on any mod but definitely see where it is a good feature to have for beginners. I mostly used the RBA mode but did try the Turbo mode and it almost made the vape seem smoother or something. I understand it’s supposed to give a boost at the beginning but the entire vape seemed smoother to me.

So I think it’s obvious but would I recommend the Voopoo Argus XT kit for you? Definitely! There’s really not much to not like about this kit. I’d like to thank Voopoo and Nical for sending the Argus XT kit for my review. Thanks go out to you the reader and thanks for making it to the end. Closed/Sold ASMODUS Colossal 80w (Black)

I'm looking for a black ASMODUS Colossal 80w mod.

I dropped mine and a few days later it wouldn't turn on. I took the batt out and checked it's voltage. It was .6 volts. I thought the batt just went bad and put in another fully charged one. After 3 or 4 puffs an error message appeared on the screen ... something like "temperature too high". Yep it was. In that short a time I could feel the bottom of the mod become very warm.

Popped the batt out and retried ... same result. So I'm hoping to find a replacement.

FreeMax with five different color combinations, offers 3 different types of frame colors matched to the CRC cartridge, and 3 different decoration styles.
The combination of "ancient and modern" to which the manufacturer refers is to be attributed to the fine leather decoration found on the handle of the Mod. The decorative style of the leather insert changes according to the choice.
● You can then choose 3 different decorations to match the color of the frame and the Tank:
• God of War; Inspired by Mars, the Roman god of war. Victory, Peace, Protection.
• Horse; Neptune the symbol of the God of the Sea. Honor, Nobility, Will.
• Eagle; Jupiter the symbol of the king of the Gods. Power, Freedom, Good omen.

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-8.gif

► Freemax Marvos X 100W Kit; First Impressions:
Marvos X Pod Mod is the latest release from Freemax home, it can accommodate a single 18650 cell for an optimistic value of 100W of maximum power. The Mod is characterized by a very good handling combined with compact dimensions and a weight of only 116g, without giving up a sturdy zinc alloy frame and fine decorations. The Boost circuit of the Marvos X is capable of providing a stable output even when the battery level is low. Marvos also features Watt / Smart / VPC / Bypass modes. In addition, the Mod is equipped with a "Full Spectrum" LED lighting on the front, side and rear of the device. The LED can be set in a variety of ways, with an incredibly wide color spectrum of mixed colors, pulsed, alternating flashes and more. Of course, the lighting can be completely deactivated by making only the display illuminated.

The Marvos CRC Pod has 5ml (2ml TPD) e-liquid capacity, with child-proof safe top filling. This tank adopts the latest evolution of MS Mesh Coils called MS-D with double high potential mesh. The "Double Mesh" solution can undoubtedly lead RDL and DTL vaping to the production of huge vapor clouds with wonderful flavors. As for Freemax, it was the first company to believe in Mesh Coils by constantly developing them and quickly becoming the reference standard. You can't go wrong choosing Freemax coils and tanks. I am currently having a lot of fun with both the Pod Tank Marvos CRC of this review and with the updated Tank Fireluke which is installed on the Maxus Solo 100W Mod of which you can read my impressions here: https://www.svapo.it/discussione/ 122185-freemax-maxus-solo-100w-kit /

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-9.jpg

► Freemax Marvos X 100W Kit; Screen and control keys:
The screen surrounded by LEDs extends over the entire front profile of the Mod. The transparency of the screen allows you to see the internal chip. The FIRE key is located at the top, slightly protruding and rectangular in shape, the same design is reserved for the adjustment keys "+ and -" which are located at the bottom and above the Type-C charging port.

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-10.jpg

Marvos X also implements the locking function of the Mod via a sliding button located at the bottom under the Type-C charging socket. This key may seem useless, because you can lock the keys while continuing to vape, or you can turn off the Mod with the five clicks before putting it back in your pocket. Actually the Mod lock sliding button can come in handy when you want to quickly turn off the LED lights to show them when you decide to vape. It seems to me an intelligent management to be able to turn off the lighting, you have 2 ways to do it; quickly using the lock button but to vape you will have to slide the button again and the LED will reactivate, or through the setting and you can vape without the LED. Deactivating the LED certainly saves battery energy, for a longer vaping autonomy.

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-12.jpg

► Freemax Marvos X 100W Kit; Side and back view:
The side view has a sober and elegant appearance consisting mainly of metal. The LED light here is of the perimeter type and divides the side panels from the rear panel. The rear panel as we have seen previously is covered with a leather decoration with 3 different graphics depending on your choice. My Marvos X is the "Navy Blue" model with "Eagle" blue leather decoration, frame and CRC tank SS.

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-13.jpg

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-14.jpg

► Freemax Marvos X 100W Kit; Battery compartment:
The rear hatch is removable and is shaped with a "C" design and is anchored to the mod by two rather sturdy magnets. The hatch has the advantage of not moving at all as it is literally wedged in the tealio and looks like a single piece with it. The hatch is quite massive, as under the layer of leather there is metal, it is also lined internally with insulating material. The 18650 battery slot has polarity indications and the top pin with negative polarity is spring loaded to allow you to place a 18650 battery quickly. The slot is made of flame-......ant and transparent plastic material. The high transparency of this material allows the LED lights to be projected very efficiently towards the screen and towards the outer perimeter of the cover.

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-15.jpg

► Freemax Marvos X 100W Kit; Bottom Base and Thread 510:
The lower base of Marvos X 100W guarantees a good stable support, shows various writings and two cross screws.

Marvos X incorporates the pod compartment directly into the mod, so you won't be able to use 510 threaded tanks, but you will still be able to insert a wide range of FreeMax cartridges all spectacular for RDL / DL vaping. The fixed part has adjustable AFC control and two huge opposing slots that will send the air towards the coils. Inside the compartment / pod you can see a metal ring screwed with two cross screws, this ring forms the magnetic base for the cartridge. On the bottom are the two pins which are spring loaded and gold plated.

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-16.jpg

► Freemax Marvos X 100W Kit; CRC Pod Tank:
The tank with circular design has excellent transparency and an e-liquid capacity of 5ml (2ml TPD). The main improvement of this cartridge over others is the practical top fill mechanism; you have to pull the top cap up, then slide it to access the fill port. This effective method incorporates "child safety" but also makes it absolutely safe to store in your pocket or purse, as it will never open unintentionally. Another improvement of this cartridge compared to others is also that of being able to have a replaceable Drip Tip 810, well made and with two excellent silicone Orings. On the bottom of the tank there are four magnets to make it very integral to the Mod, in addition there is the classic liftable rubber to insert the eliquid. The coils are inserted by pressure.

Freemax-Marvos-X-100-W-Kit-17.jpg

► Freemax Marvos; Coils and Vaping Test:
Marvos X uses the latest line of MS-D coils. These Coils use the FM COILTECH 5.0 technology characterized by tea fiber cotton and the military-grade SS904L double Mesh, the net is enveloping at 360 ° both internally and externally with respect to the breathable material.

• MS-D Mesh Coil 0.15Ω (60W - 80W):
This Coil is my favorite, at 60W it is already perfect when new, and without strange flavors. Quick to respond to the Fire button with flawless flavor and huge, awkward vapor production. Going up with the power, with the airflow completely open at 70 and 80W this coil becomes a devil! The flavor quality is superb and the vapor is incredibly thick and hot to the correct point. It keeps pace with compulsive vaping but is logically thirsty for e-liquid, on the other hand, high performance pays off. Another aspect to take into consideration is the high battery consumption at these high powers. The 18650 battery guarantees better autonomy by lowering the power to 60W and the coil still responds well, in this case it is better to slightly close the control of the air to taste a similar taste to that obtained by setting a higher power.

• MS-D Mesh Coil 0.25Ω (30W - 50W):
From an energy saving perspective, this Coil with its lower range of use is certainly a better option for this kit. My weak point with this Coil I found it at 45W with wide open AFC. At 45w it expresses itself almost at the levels of the previous one, with a flavor of almost the same level and a fresher but slightly less full-bodied and dense vapor. This resistance, however, has an advantage and the secret lies in the possibility of lowering the power up to 30W while maintaining a good heating speed and in combination with a restricted regulation of the air flow it becomes possible to enjoy an excellent RDL vape. Naturally at 30W the vaping autonomy increases considerably with the lower energy consumption of the battery.

Freemax is a manufacturer known for their Coils and the flavor they provide. The Marvos X kit continues to live up to this reputation. The heavenly flavor of these MS-D Double Coils is unreal for a pod tank and definitely competes with the best sub-ohm tanks I've tried. Furthermore, the wide range available of MS Mesh resistors and different cartridges can be combined with this Mod with excellent results.

► Freemax Marvos X 100W Kit; Final conclusions:
Anyone who has read this whole review will have guessed that I really liked this kit! Marvos X proved to be very satisfying and fun for me, I often carry it with me on my outings along with a spare 18650 battery. I enjoyed playing with the incredible range of lights, but I have to say that I rarely use LEDs, just to laugh sometimes with my friends. Other than that, I just wanted a bigger tank. For the rest, Marvos X completely won me over, and it was certainly the general quality of the Kit combined with the incredible performance of the MS-Double Mesh Coils that made me fall in love with Marvos X.
I can really enthusiastically recommend Marvos X 100W Kit

Bench Test Results: Samsung 30Q6 (“6” on the wrap) - 15A 3000mAh 18650

These tests below only note my personal ESTIMATED ratings for the batteries I tested at the time I tested them. Any battery that is not a genuine Samsung, Sony, Murata, LG, Panasonic, Molicel, or Sanyo can change at any time! This can be one of the hazards of using “rewrapped” or batteries from other manufacturers so carefully research any battery you are considering using before purchasing.

Misusing or mishandling lithium-ion batteries can pose a SERIOUS RISK of property damage, personal injury, or even death. Never use them outside of a fully protected battery pack and you use them at your own risk. Never exceed the battery’s true continuous discharge rating (CDR), never let it get colder than 0°C or hotter than 60°C, and keep the plastic wrap and top insulating ring in perfect condition. Never use a battery that is physically damaged in any way.

Testing batteries at their limits is dangerous and should never be attempted by anyone who has not thoroughly studied the dangers involved, understands the risks, has the proper equipment, and takes all appropriate safety precautions.

If the battery has only one current rating number, or if it only says "max", then I have to assume the battery is rated at that current level for any type of discharge, including continuous.

Test Results
It’s been 4-1/2 years since I last tested this cell so I thought it was worth seeing if the performance has changed over the years. This version of the 30Q has a “6” in the lower left corner of the printing on the wrap. If there is no “6” then it is not a 30Q6.

The 30Q6’s I tested performed a little better than the 30Q’s I tested in 2018. You probably won’t notice the difference but it’s good to see.

The datasheet and presentation document mentions operation at 20A (not a rating!) and a maximum cell temperature of 75°C but I recommend not using it at over 15A. This is an “energy” cell and not a “power” cell and you start getting a lot of voltage sag when running near its 15A rating or higher. The cell already reaches over 70°C when run at 15A continuous so 20A operation would have to be non-continuous.

Two cells tested out to 3075mAh and 3089mAh, which is good consistency. As expected for cells from a major manufacturer both cells easily exceeded their 3000mAh rating. I have not tested the cycle life of these cells.

These were purchased for testing by me from 18650BatteryStore (18650 Battery Store - Lithium Ion Batteries, Chargers and Accessories).
