VANDYVAPE REQUIEM RTA review by hittman

Hello and thank you once again for joining me for yet another one of my reviews. This time I will be taking a look at the Vandy Vape Requiem RTA that was sent to me by Sourcemore in order to provide you with a fair and honest review. The Requiem is a really interesting tank to me as it comes with three different tank sections. One each for MTL, RDL, and DL styles of vaping. It has a 4.5ml liquid capacity and uses a straight from the side airflow much like an rda to simulate that type of enhanced flavor that is produced by rdas. It comes with three tank sections like I mentioned and also comes with two different top caps to support both 810 and 510 style tips. There’s quite a bit to this one but I’ll try to keep it as simple as possible.

INITIAL THOUGHTS:

It isn’t discussed much on the website but the Requiem was created by El Mono Vapeador in collaboration with Vandy Vape. I really like the packaging for this one with the clear window that allows you to see the assembled tank as well as the other two tank sections with chimneys and the MTL top cap. It does have the El Mono name on the bottom with the Requiem RTA name on top both in gold. The back side of the box has a contents list and a list of features. I’m not sure why but find it funny that the warning says not only to keep away from children but also non-smokers and animals.

Once the top of the box is slid off then you can get a better look at the tank, spare tank sections, and MTL top cap. It’s a little tight in the box but after you lift the foam insert then located underneath you will find the accessory bag, two fused Clapton coils, and the instruction manual.

1681579772369.png

As always, the first thing you want to do with any new tank is to disassemble and clean the tank thoroughly to remove any residual machining oil or debris. The Requiem breaks down completely as you can see below. It really has to since you have to be able to switch between the three tank sections.

1681579824194.png

The DTL/RDL top cap comes installed on the tank with the 810 short drip tip. There is not an o ring on the tip but instead there is an internal o ring in the top cap like I’ve seen on some other tanks. There is also an outer o ring underneath the top cap as well as a smaller one in the center where the cap meets up with the fill port cap as you can see in the picture above. The outside of the top cap has three indentations on each side to help you get a better grip on the top cap to remove for filling.

The airflow control ring has five slotted vertical holes of different sizes to provide airflow directly from the side to the coil. There isn’t a stop on the airflow control which I don’t particularly care for but it is what it is. About 90 degrees away from the slots, there is the Vandy Vape logo stamped into the ring. There are three lines on the base of the tank that are supposed to help you adjust the airflow by using those three lines as guides.

1681579861346.png

1681579881743.png

I wasn’t really too fond of the idea of the tank sections being made of plastic but at least the chimney portion in the center of each tank section is metal. It is good though that the chimneys and threading on the chimneys is metal. They seem pretty thick and durable so will hopefully hold up well. As I’ve mentioned a few times, there are a total of three tank sections with different sized chimneys. The DTL tank comes pre-installed on the tank when you receive it but I snapped a photo of the three side by side so you could see the difference. Left to right they are MTL, RDL, and DL.

In the second picture you can see the difference in airflow inlets on the side of each tank section. From left to right they are MTL, RDL, and DL. The MTL tank section has just one small hole while the RDL tank has two holes and the DL tank has one large hole. The airflow can be further adjusted with the airflow control ring. I’m not a big fan of this one because it’s hard to see where you are adjusted to due to the shape of the airflow slots and the holes in the tanks being recessed. Also there is not a positive stop for the airflow ring which would make it easier to adjust if there was. Also included with the tank kit is an MTL top cap and drip tip.

The build deck for the Requiem is a simple two screw build deck. There were two .26 ohm fused Clapton coils included in the kit so I used those. I feel like it’s best to test tanks for review with what is included since the manufacturer is recommending those accessories. There is a shoulder on the side of each screw to help trap the coil legs. Like any build, I installed the coil, straightened and centered it, did a burn in, and wicked the coil. Included with the kit is what I would call a coil centering ring. You place the ring over the top of the deck and use your coil to align the coil using the cut outs in the black plastic ring. I really didn’t feel like it wasn’t necessary but you can see how this works in the last picture below.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Overall, the Vandy Vape Requiem RTA seems like a pretty decent tank. They made the effort to really make a tank that is good for all three types of vaping being MTL, RDL, and DTL by making a separate tank section with different airflows available with each of the three included tank sections and even went as far as to include a separate top cap and tip for MTL. I’d give them an A for effort. Some people might complain that the tanks are made of plastic but it was necessary to make them threaded and interchangeable.

I started with the DTL tank section for testing since it was already installed on the tank. With the included coil I was able to run it around 24-25 watts and get pretty good flavor and vapor production. To me even the DTL doesn’t have a huge amount of airflow available and I ended up running it wide open which I almost never do with a DTL tank.

Next up I decided to try the tank assembled with the RDL tank section. This one was my favorite of the three. I was still in the low to mid 20’s on wattage but got the restricted puff that I like with the airflow set wide open. I do wish that they had included a different top cap and tip for this tank also. The short wide drip tip was a bit much for this setup and I ended up switching the tip.

Lastly came the MTL tank section and top cap. I did use the same coil for all three setups since that is all that they included was two of the same coil. I started out at 16 watts with the airflow wide open and worked my way up to 18 watts. With the airflow adjustment ring, you can get the airflow almost completely shut off so it should be ok for those that like a tight MTL. I personally like a looser MTL. The flavor and vapor production were good for an MTL setup. I am not much of an MTL vaper but was able to get decent results with the MTL tank section and top cap installed while using a NET tobacco mix that I like and have used many times. The tip on the MTL top cap is a 510 tip and is replaceable while the one on the other top cap is an 810.

I do have a few complaints on this tank. The airflow control not having a positive stop and it being hard to tell where you have it set. Also the bottom pin on the base of the tank sticks out quite a bit and I had trouble trying to run it on a Dovpo Themis but it ran fine on another mod. With the Themis I kept getting a “check atomizer” warning. One other thing I think I forgot to mention is how the base attaches to the tank section. It’s one of those tanks where you turn the base about 1/3 of a turn and pull it out so you really need to be careful when unscrewing the tank from a mod or your mod might get a bath of eliquid. Always unscrew the tank by holding the very bottom of the tank at the base. I personally don’t love this style of base attachment and have had some where I struggle to get the base off to access the coil. During my testing I have not had that issue but it doesn’t mean it won’t happen later.

I’d like to thank Sourcemore and Kavis for sending the Vandy Vape Requiem RTA kit for this review. As always, a big thanks to the readers. Below is a link to the website if you’d like to try one for yourself as well as a coupon code.

Clicking/popping when inhaling/exhaling.

Long time vapist here. Been on custom rolled coils and DIY juice for at least 10 years now.

Not asking for a diagnosis but was just curious if anyone else has ever noticed a very quiet clicking, crackling or popping sound coming from their mouth (I assume actually coming from throat or lungs) upon exhaling or inhaling. I can hear it when I'm in a very quiet area. It's subtle, but this is what I would describe the sound is like:

Imagine you're inflating a plastic bag. The last few little creases in the plastic straightening out as the bag fully inflates; imagine the sound that would make. This is what I'm hearing sometimes upon inhaling or exhaling. Curious to see if anyone else has ever experienced this.

Toasting Tobacco

So, I love the flavor of my cigar NETs, but there was something lacking which I wanted to try to get - a bit more of that smoky flavor I love in burning cigars, hopefully enough to offset the sweetness you get from glycerin and PG. So I decided to try something I hadn’t seen before - toasting the stuff. I shredded a cigar that made a great NET, pulled out my old toaster oven, put the tobacco on some aluminum foil, and gave it a mild toast cycle.

I’ll report back on how it comes out, but I have a warning if anyone else finds this idea interesting - it will smell up your house. Quick. I didn’t burn anything, didn’t even toast it a huge amount, but the smell spread quickly and everywhere. Fortunately I had the foresight to do this outside of the kitchen, so I was (largely) able to contain the smell, and I’m airing out the room as I type this (and have been doing so for a couple of hours). But, if anyone else has the same idea, do it out on the porch. Even using the garage would stink things up. Now I see how Big Tobacco was able to sell some people on “Heat not burn” products - even far short of those temperatures the smell just pours off of the stuff. No smoke whatsoever, but tons of heated tobacco scent.

If anyone out there loves NLV Tappulles (no longer available anywhere), I have four jugs, never opened but OLD. It's been stored in a freezer since I received it, still in the original little baggies.

I hate to throw it out but I have a feeling that's where it might end up. I loved it once but my taste buds have changed, apparently.

Comparing the Valkyrie mini Single Coil RTA and Kylin Mini v2: Which One to Choose?

Hello, could someone inform me if there is a big difference between the single coil RTA Valkyrie and the Kylin Mini v2? If so, what are the noticeable differences? I'm thinking of getting one or even both, but if they are too similar, I'll just opt for one. Please share your thoughts. Thank you very much.

DOVPO THEMIS BOX MOD review by hittman

I’m very pleased to be back with you today. I have to say that it is nice to finally get another box mod for review. This time I was sent the Dovpo Themis Mod by Dovpo in order to provide a fair and honest review. Any more it seems like mod releases are few and far between and give kudos to Dovpo for making the effort to put out another box mod instead of pod after pod like some companies have chosen to do. The Themis uses dual 18650 batteries to provide an output range of 5-220 watts. It does offer a charging rate of 2000mah although it’s always recommended to charge batteries in a charger instead of the mod if you can. It has a working voltage of 6.4-8.4 volts and recognizes a resistance range from .07-3.5 ohms. The Themis has a .96” color display and has five output modes available. It’s made from aluminum alloy to keep it lightweight yet durable. It boasts simple operation that can accommodate beginners but I’ll let you know later what I think about that.

INITIAL THOUGHTS:

The Themis comes in a pretty standard box that can be opened from either end. I kind of thought the presentation on this one might be a little fancier but I guess it is simple packaging for a mod that boasts simplicity in use. It does have a cover that lifts up so you can see the mod through a clear viewing window.

The front of the box is pretty plain with it being black and the Dovpo and Themis Box Mod words printed on the front. Like I said the cover does lift up so you can see the mod and the Dovpo logo is on the inside of that flap. The back side of the box has just a contents list and a warning along with the company information.

CUWsw5i.jpg

1681477987993.png

Once opened, the mod is a little better seen. I received the black version so it doesn’t really stand out that much against the black box and black foam insert. Inside is the mod, a USB charging cord and a user manual. The mod was so tight in the foam insert that the back panel where you load the batteries stayed in the foam when I pulled the mod out.

1681478052709.png

The face plate that surrounds the fire button and + and – buttons is held on with two magnets and exposes a really nice design underneath. I don’t know if you can buy different face plates for this or not but could swap them if you have more than one.

1681478176107.png

1681478215097.png

The opposite side is where the batteries are loaded. With a top end rating of 220 watts, the Themis does use dual 18650 batteries. The back panel is also held on with two magnets. One runs vertical while the other is horizontal. The battery polarity is clearly marked on both battery trays and there is a cloth strap that you can weave underneath the batteries to help with removing them when it’s time for a battery change. You can see in the picture below there is a USB port in between the two battery bays. I’m guessing that it is intended for updating since charging batteries inside a mod is not recommended.

1681478265453.png

The 510 connection plate is centered and held in place by two torx head screws. The center pin is plated and spring loaded. It can hold up to a 26mm atomizer without overhang.

1681478337030.png

The bottom of the mod has the Dovpo name printed on it as well as “Designed by Dovpo” and a serial number. As you can see in the picture below there are notches in the bottom to make it easier to remove the side panels by using a fingernail to get into those slots and lift the panels.

1681478384316.png

Next up is the .96” color display. I’ve noticed that this is a common size for the display on several different mods that I’ve tested or used. It is color but some of the font is a little hard to read due to the size. However, there is the option of having the display green or red but I’m partial to the green. The display shows the following information.

  • Dovpo name on top
  • Two battery level indicators
  • Output setting and mod in large font
  • Output voltage while firing and coil resistance
  • Length of current puff
  • Puff counter
  • Lock/unlock symbol
The button and menu operation is fairly simple and user friendly. The wattage adjustment is in .5 watt increments for quick presses and if held will adjust in 1 watt increments.

  • Press the fire button 5X to turn the mod on/off
  • Press the + and – buttons to lock the adjustment buttons and the lock symbol will be displayed on the screen
  • Press the fire button 3X to enter the menu where you will find the following options.
  • Power
  • Voltage
  • Temp Ni
  • Temp Ti
  • Temp SS
  • Bright
  • Stats
  • Colour
  • Exit
1681478466566.png

1681478500947.png

The Themis Box Mod has built in protections as most devices do. They are as follows.

  • Reverse Polarity protection
  • No Load protection
  • Short Circuit protection
  • Time out protection(10 seconds)
  • High Temperature protection
  • Low Battery protection(triggered when the combined voltage of both batteries is lower than 6.4V)
FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Themis Box Mod is just that. A 220 watt rectangular box mod with squared off edges. It does remind me a little of a Dot Mod box mod that I have since both have the removable face plate with a design underneath. I think Dovpo was going for a classic style box mod with fairly simple controls while still offering all of what I would call standard functions that we are used to seeing. Sure I would have liked to have had the corners rounded to make it a little more comfortable in the hand but feel like that might have taken away from the classic styling that they were going for.

The body of the Themis is made of aluminum alloy to help it stay fairly lightweight despite housing two 18650 batteries. I have never pushed a mod past 80 watts and don’t know that I ever will. With my style of vaping the dual batteries last at least 3-4 days. I tend to run somewhere between 24 and 45 watts depending on the tank and coil inside it. I felt like the battery management was pretty good on this one.

The 510 connection plate will hold atomizers up to 26mm which I think will cover about 90% of the tanks that I have at least. I tried a few different tanks on this one. I happen to be testing the Requiem RTA while also testing the Themis and at first it seemed to work fine with this tank but it has a 510 pin that protrudes quite a bit and after a while I started getting a “check atomizer” message and the tank wouldn’t fire. I guess it didn’t like the long pin. I immediately tried two other tanks and both worked fine on the Themis. The Themis seemed to me to have a quick response time when firing but I really don’t have a way to test that time. I will just say that it seemed to respond quickly using the proprietary Dovpo chipset. The display is ok but I kind of wish they had made the font on the wattage setting a little smaller to allow for the other information on the bottom of the display to be a little larger. I don’t have the best eyes and struggled a little bit to see the other information on the screen.

Overall I think Dovpo has accomplished what they set out to do was to make an old school type box mod that is a powerhouse and works well. Also this one is fairly inexpensive for a dual battery mod. I enjoyed testing it and wouldn’t have a problem recommending it if you are looking for this type of mod. I don’t really do TC vaping so can’t really comment on how the TC control on this one works.

I’d like to thank Dovpo and Joan for sending the Dovpo Themis Box Mod for this review and hope to continue working with them in the future. Thanks as always to you the readers! Below is a link to the Dovpo website and feel free to take a look around. They have a lot of interesting products available.
