Cthulhu Mod Hastur 88W TC Box Mod - Review

Hi ECF members, In this review i take a look at the Hastur 88W TC Box Mod from Cthulhu Mod. The Cthulhu Mod Hastur 88W TC Box Mod was supplied for the purpose of this review by Joshua from Cthulhu Mod.

HASTUR MOD 88W TC – CTHULHU MOD -Innovations for You

Introduction

Cthulhu Mod was the first manufacturer i came across that bridged that gap with some of their early RDA's and RTA's between mainstream and High End while keeping prices reasonable of course now Thunderhead Creations and BP Mods are very similar with both Dovpo and Aspire with their Manufacture collaborations also upping their game in this regard!

Cthulhu Mod for a long time were rebuildable specialists whether that being RDA's, RTA's or RDTA's but then they released their Mosfet tube semi-mechanical mod and now they enter the regulated scene with the Hastur 88W TC Mod.

The Hastur 88W TC Mod is a single 18650 device powered by the Atom chip offering up to 88w in power. The Hastur is user friendly being simple to use lacking features such as curves, preheats and also no extra settings or puff counter but it does host a full TC suite as well as Bypass and Variable Wattage modes. With it's SS304 and Aviation Aluminium construction both it's high build quality and compact size makes this a device worth a closer look, let's crack on!

Contents:

1 x Hastur mod
1 x USB cable
1 x User manual

Aesthetics and Ergonomics

The Hastur Mod is packaged in quite a useful deep tin with "HASTUR" raised on the front and a round coloured small sticker in the corner depicting the chosen colour. I received the Midnight Green option which has a SS304 battery tube then a Midnight Green or what i would describe as Forest Green Aviation Aluminium front section but if the use of Aluminium fools you into thinking despite having a Stainless Steel battery tube the device would be on the lighter side you would be wrong the Aluminium shell is thick and this is one weighty solid device!

The style is kind of the SL Class, Cold steel battery tube with added front end for the PCB set up but this is much slicker in design without that funky look! There has been two new colour options added recently so now the option is Silver, Black, Midnight Green, All Black or Black & Midnight Green!

The device has 6 prominent screws so if needed taking the device apart will be easy and in general it just feels and looks old school but with a modern colour display. The face of the device has a nicely machined concave SS304 fire button top with some travel before giving a satisfying click, we then have the screen followed by 2 smaller round SS304 navigational buttons lined up vertically which are much stiffer but again very clicky, right at the bottom of the face we have a Type C USB port.

On the base we have small understated branding and Gold plated, old school style threaded battery plate with central raised section to use for grip when turning, we also have a large venting hole either side. Moving up top fitted tanks sit flush on the tube surface rather than having a plate and is raised slightly above the protruding front section to protect it's surface but not enough to give any visible gapping of note.

The build quality is excellent and both it's compact size, curved spine and fire button position makes it very ergonomic but bare in mind it's a very solid device and heavy for it's size!

___________________________________________________________________

Fitting The Battery

The Hastur accommodates a single 18650 which gets fitted into the battery tube by unscrewing the bottom battery plate and then just sliding in. The plate has a negative battery orientation in White on the underside which is good to see and once fitted we have no battery movement whatsoever.

I wouldn't exactly say the threading was super smooth but not really crunchy either just perfectly adequate but i do wish this had one of the fold out levers to make unscrewing and tightening in place less fiddly!

___________________________________________________________________

The Display

I like the display, it's nice and colourful but not offensive, well laid out and both bright and sharp.

At the top we have "HASTUR" and then underneath your current mode. Underneath the mode we have either the Watts, Temperature or "BYPASS" depending which mode you are in, this is followed by the time of your vape but no puff counter.

We then have to the left the resistance and to the right the Voltage when in Variable Wattage mode or Wattage when using either Bypass or Temperature Control modes, finally at the bottom positioned horizontally we have the battery status bar.

___________________________________________________________________

Operating The Hastur Mod

Although the Hastur has s full TC suite and Bypass mode as well as standard Variable Wattage it's a very simple device to operate. When installing a battery we get the Cthulhu Mod Logo followed instantly by the working screen so no waiting for this to boot up! The usual 5 clicks of the fire button to turn on and off on the Hastur is actually how you lock and unlock it and then once locked holding down the fire button (the device doesn't fire when locked) turns the device off, once off it does revert back to the standard 5 clicks to turn back on again and despite the device needing to be locked first to turn off once turned back on it's unlocked by default! I really wish this was a much more standard affair as i want to be able to lock just the navigational buttons but still be able to fire and turning the device off takes longer needing to lock it first, after saying that the navigational buttons are nice and stiff (in a good way)!

Clicking the fire button 3 times enters the menu giving the options of Regulated (Variable Wattage), Bypass, Temper (TC modes), colour and back which takes you back to the previous working screen! When choosing Temperature Control you get a further screen giving the options of SS, NI, TI, TCR and back. Once on a Temperature materials screen holding up and down together allows you to set wattage and pressing up and fire together allows the resistance to be altered! selecting colour allows you to change the main colour accents on the display, the options are Blue, Green or Red!

The wattage adjusts in 0.1W increments from 5W right up to 88W and round robins. I do like devices to adjust in point 1 increments up to 20w so MTL vapers can get more precision but i wish from 20w to 88w this adjusted in either 0.5w or 1w increments, on the upside when a button is held down it scrolls extremely quickly! Just to also point out the screen times out after 30 seconds but springs back into life with any button press and also fires from timed out screen with absolutely no delay!

___________________________________________________________________

Protections:

Over 10s Protection
Short Circuit Protection
Low Resistance Protection
Over Current Protection
Low Voltage Protection
High Temperature Protection
Over Charge Protection

Could be more, protections not listed but above are active taken from alerts listed and other information given in the manual!

___________________________________________________________________

Charging

As usual i would always recommend charging externally but if you do need to charge in the device the Hastur has a Type C USB connection and supports a 1A charge rate. I am seeing this more often (slow charge rate with Type C), one advantage Type C has i have always been led to believe is that you can charge much faster safely so why have Type C but then only a 1A charge rate? If it had an in-built battery i would find this quite a big con.

While charging a battery charging progress bar is displayed, the Hastur also supports pass-through and firmware upgrades!

___________________________________________________________________

My Thoughts!

I love the slickness of it's design which helps make it ergonomically sound, i also am very impressed with it's build quality although some may find it too heavy for their own liking!

There is nothing complicated about it's operation probably because we have no settings other than modes and changing display accents which many will prefer while others would prefer being able to monitor their puffs, set a curve or alter screen time out settings etc!

I also wish the wattage switched to either 0.5 or 1W adjustments after 20w but do like the 0.1w adjustments for lower wattage settings. I also do like this old school style of fitting the battery as it means you can't damage your wraps and guarantees no battery movement but would much prefer a fold out lever to make it less fiddly to turn!

The layout of the display i can't fault and being able to customise the colour is also for me a pro. Up to 24mm in diameter atomizers will fit no problem which covers the vast majority you would want to use an a single 18650 device although the top of the tube does just slightly bevel away but you would need to really suffer badly from OCD for it to be an issue!

Seeing in the stats the efficiency is 85% (kudos to Cthulhu for displaying that) i did wonder if battery life would be an issue but i have noticed no difference between the Hastur and the vast majority of the other single 18650 devices i have used.

I don't test TC so for TC users you would need to do more research but in power mode it worked flawlessly with no noticeable delay when firing while hitting set wattage instantly, just a damn fine device, i like this a lot!

Compact and Ergonomic
Slick design
5 Colour options
Bright, sharp, well laid out colour display
Colour of display can be customised
Full TC Suite (Not tested)
Wattage and Bypass modes
Fired without delay hitting set wattage instantly
performed flawlessly
Nice clicky buttons
0.1increments for MTL users
Scrolls very quickly and round robins
User friendly, very easy to navigate
Old school bottom battery plate
Venting holes and clearly marked battery orientation (in White)
Type C USB
Supports both pass-through and firmware upgrades

Cons

Wish just navigational buttons could be locked
Need to lock before powering down
No puff counter or extra settings (con for some, pro for others)
Battery plate a little fiddly (wish it had fold out lever)
Only 1A charge rate (external battery so only a con if needing to charge in the device)
Wish wattage adjustment switched to 0.5 or 1w increments after 20w
Atomizers over 24mm will overhang (most atomizers you would want to use on a single 18650 would be 24mm or less)
Heavy device (but solid build quality, subjective)

I would once again like to thank Joshua from Cthulhu Mod for supplying the Hastur 88W TC Box Mod for the purpose of this review, thanks for reading and stay safe!

Washington D.C to Prohibit Flavored Vapes

In an email from Innokin today, was a link to today's Vaping Weekly by Benedict Jones. In addition to more news about Canada's up-coming restrictions on most flavored vape products...the following was included, about Washington, DC:

"On Tuesday, June 15, The District of Columbia Council voted to prohibit the sale of flavoured vaping and tobacco products (including menthol cigarettes and cigars).

The bill will be voted on a second time Tuesday, June 29, but it is expected to pass this stage without significant change. After the second vote, the bill must be approved by the mayor, and pass a 30-day congressional review period before the law takes effect.

The bill also covers synthetic nicotine products, which have, at times, been suggested as a way of side-stepping legislation which restricts “tobacco products” in the U.S. Since synthetic nicotine products are covered by the bill, it would appear that other next-generation nicotine products, such as pouches, will be affected by the flavour ban."

So, little by little it continues....;)

Damn vape Doom X rta review

I received Doom x rta from Health cabin for the purpose of this review.

Doom x colors:

- Silver
- Black
- Gunmetal

8HkFn13.jpg

Specifications:

- Height: 43mm
- Diameter: 26mm
- Capacity: 2ml(TPD version), 5.5ml(standard version) or 8ml

In the box:

1* Doom X RTA
1* Bubble Glass Tube (8ml)
2* Juice Control Piece
2* Organic Cotton
1* X-Mesh 03 Coil (A1)
1* X-Mesh 05 Coil (A1)
1* Mesh Jig
1* Twist Tool
1* User Manual
1* Spare Parts Bag

Va5mmHs.jpg

Doom x rta is mesh atomizer and this atomizer comes in really nice package where you will receive many things. You will receive 3 tanks, coils, cotton, tool and spare parts. Build quality of the atomizer is really good, everything is as it should be. On the atomizer you can see some details, you can see details on the top cap and on the base so you can easily use this atomizer.

CqujG5Q.jpg

Atomizer comes with 810 drip tip and this drip tip is good for using in my opinion, if you don't like it you can use here any other 810 drip tip if you want.
This is a top fill atomizer and threads are very good, you can very easy unscrew the top cap. When you take off the top cap you can see two big fill holes and you can fill the tank with any bottle without any problems which is good.

KceD2Af.jpg

You will receive the atomizer with 3 different tanks. You will receive tank with 2ml capacity, also you will receive tank with 5.5ml capacity and you will receive bubble tank with 8ml capacity which is really good capacity in my opinion.
This atomizer has liquid control and you can adjust it by spinning the tank, you can completely close it if you want.

mXpv19e.jpg

pbwnaYy.jpg

On the base you can see the airflow control ring and you can see 3 holes on each side, basically we have 6 airflow holes here. You can really easy adjust the airflow on the atomizer. On the chamber you can see airflow holes and we have here honeycomb airflow.
On the build deck you can see two spring loaded clamps for the coil. In the middle you can see spring loaded block to keep cotton on the mesh coil. In the package you will receive two coils which is good and also you will receive cotton that you can use here. Building here is really simple when you use the tool from the package, really nice tool. Wicking here is also very simple, I can say that this atomizer is easier to wick than other atomizers that I tried. You need to cut your cotton alighned with the base and that is pretty much it, you can leave a bit more if you want and fluff it, that will also work very well. In my opinion this is easiest mesh rta for wicking.

dU3vp97.jpg

r0ierxO.jpg

cOGw0ut.jpg

My thoughts:

Build quality of the atomizer is really good and there is nothing to complain about, threads are also very good. Package is great, you will receive many things, coils, cotton, tools, tanks, really nice package. Top fill system is good and you can really easy fill the atomizer. Capacity is also great, you can use 2ml tank, 5.5ml tank and bubble tank with 8ml capacity. Bubble tank here is without liquid control and also bubble tank is from glass. So we have liquid control here that you can use, personally I never closed it and it wicks great. Building and wicking is very simple and most important thing is that this is the easiest tank to wick in my opinion. Airflow is good, you can expect a lot of airflow when it is fully open and we have honeycomb airflow from the inside. Flavor is good, up there with other good mesh atomizers. In my opinion this is very good mesh rta, I like the flavor, quality and I really like how simple it is for wicking.

Rating out of 10:

Vapor production: 8.5
Flavor: 8.5
Build quality: 9
Value: 9

Cons:

- Maybe someone will not like that regular tanks are plastic

Pros:

- Good build quality
- Coils and cotton in the pacakge
- 3 tanks
- 8ml capacity
- Liquid control
- Easy to fill
- Good flavor
- Easy to build and wick
- Airflow is good

Thanks Health Cabin

Where have all the DIY N.E.T. - E-liquid video tutorials/discussion been!??

This all will probably sound silly. But why has there not been much video tutorial/tips and tricks content on making NET E-liquids? Just the same few on YouTube and such. I was around before the Internet so things progressed very quickly since then, but it just seems with how normal it is to find something about anything on the web and popular sites for video content that you’d think I’d find this somewhere. There just isn’t much out there with out forums and articles. Why not some cool vids on this topic? I know everyone knows more than me, so someone please help me understand why their slim to none when it comes to DIY NET e-liquid making/perfecting. It’s a great topic when dealing with folks that still want the good stuff flavors even when they are no longer combusting it anymore. At least there are the numerous folks discussing and reviewing sellers of NET e-liquids which is still very appreciated. Who would be kind enough to to share where I’m missing it or tell me why it’s not out there much in vids/clips? I’d appreciate it greatly as following instructions from threads is nice and all, but who doesn’t like to visually learn as well right?! I can save a lot of time with having multiple formats of learning and study. Thanks all!

5.jpg

Available colours:
• Ash Gray, Cloudy Gray, Leather Black, Leather White.

6.JPG

First impressions:
After having appreciated the "ecological" aspect of the package, I begin to get to know the product ...
Innokin sent me the "Ash Gray" colorway for this test . I also really like the other colors available which are all attractive. The frame of the Coolfire 80 is available in 3 different colors; Shiny black, gunmetal and silver steel. The inserts are made of imitation suede or classic imitation leather with colors ranging from soft gray to white or black.

The form factor and dimensions of the Coolfire 80 are similar to those of the beautiful Innokin Kroma-R, but the design looks different and I would also say quite personal and exclusive. Innokin's continuous effort to propose alternative ideas and not simple reproductions of something already seen I believe will be greatly appreciated by users.

Lightweight:
Of course during the review I will try to deepen in the best way all the aspects concerning the Mod and the new Tank Zenith II, but what I would like to emphasize and that greatly surprised me is the weight of the new Coolfire 80 which is even lighter than the Pico75 !
If we think that the very manageable and popular Kroma-R weighs 139g I would say that with its 88g weight the Coolfire will make a lot of people happy.
The Coolfire therefore proves to be very light, transmits sensations of structural solidity to the hand and a high feeling with the very clickable control buttons.

7.jpg

Front / rear view:
The front of the mod has a protruding and thinned profile, the dark color screen occupies almost all the available space and encompasses; the button, fire, the display, the "+" and "-" buttons and the USB-C charging socket.
The three buttons are round in shape, protruding and easily accessible by the fingers, the "fire" button is surrounded by a pleasant golden finish. The color display is large and bright, the fonts are enlarged and clearly legible.
From top to bottom the display shows the following information; operating mode, battery indicator, set power, puff duration, coil resistance, puff counter, volts or Hz.

The back is of a perfectly round section and is covered with an insert that has the texture of suede and the look of craftsmanship with visible stitching and the logo heat-embossed at the bottom.

8.jpg

Side view:
It is noted that Coolfire Z80 is substantially a "Tube" with a protruding appendage of sturdy zinc alloy thinned towards the front. The look is very reminiscent of "Ehpro cold steel" but Coolfire Z80 from this point of view is much smaller and lighter.
As a connection between the leather insert and the display there is a metal plate (present on both sides) screwed to the mod using two screws, on one side we find the writing "Coolfire Z80" and on the other "Innokin".

9.jpg

Top / bottom view:
Of course at the top we find the mug with 510 thread and spring-loaded gold / plated pin. The cup is slightly raised and this avoids scratching the paint during the screwing / unscrewing phase of the tank.
Coolfire Z80 is able to accommodate atomizers with a maximum diameter of 26mm without protrusions.

The bottom of the mod has a battery screw cap equipped with a convenient flip-up lever to aid in the opening / closing phase. They are also present; 4 vent holes for the cell in case the battery should bleed, the logo and the C E mark.

Hi guys,
I’m new here and thought I would share my little Saturday project with you. I never liked the cheap ugly red looking leather on this mod from day one. Didn’t look, feel or smell like leather and the color was just hideous. Now she’s sporting top grain premium distressed leather. Soft and luxurious, like the manufacturer claims. You’re welcome Lost Vape!

Best pre-made RDA coils for Flavor and Vapor output?

Hey Guys,

I have been learning the ropes of RDA vaping, and so far I absolutely love it! As the title states I’m wondering what coils (FC, Aliens, etc) Would be best for flavor and vapor output? I’m currently running some Wotofo 0.33 Fused Claptons (~0.17 in dual coil) @ 60 Watts. The flavor and vapor is ok, But I’m looking for a little more. Maybe something I could run at a slightly higher wattage and get more vapor / flavor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Need some answers

Hi everyone,
I'm new to vaping and having a bit of an issue. I've looked for answers but most that have my problem are non smokers who started vaping.
I've been smoking for nearly 15 years (25 perday) and have just brought a vape, eliquid also 100mg/mls of freebase nicotine. I mixed 2ml of freebase in my juice (60ml) as this is what my local retailer said to do. He said it will be enough for me. But after I vape it feels like I'm getting drunk. Is it possibly too much nicotine even tho it is only just over 3mg and I smoke tobacco which has more than that and don't get light-headed. I take a small draw and not for long. I have a freemax Maxpod.
Can anyone help me understand this? Do I need to go lower on the nicotine amount?
Thanks

Hello forum. I'm new. Is it too soon to ask an AR mod question?

If not, I'm wondering if the authentic original AR mods by Tac Mods USA (unused/as new) are worth much to anybody these days? I gave one away today cause I have a couple of them but then someone said I was foolish for giving it away b/c it's kind of valuable. Any idea if that's accurate?

Canadian Federal Flavor Ban Announced

The Canadian federal government published guidance for the federal flavor ban in their latest Canada Gazette Part I (https://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p1/2021/2021-06-19/html/reg2-eng.html)

The federal government is proposing a prohibition on all flavors other than Tobacco, Mint and Menthol.

They define "flavor" as anything that has a sensory attribute in inducing youth to vape - this means that if it smells like strawberries, it's banned. If it smells like cream, it's banned. If it smells like anything other than tobacco, mint or menthol, it is prohibited for sale in all of Canada.

There is still time to act.

Calgary MP Tom Kmiec has introduced a petition - If you are Canadian, please sign it!

You can find the petition at https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-3362

After you fill in your information, they will send you an email with a confirmation link, you MUST press it for your entry to be entered.

Has anyone had this issue with the Kipo?

I have used my Kipo daily for about 3 weeks. Usually, I just charge it and go right back to using it (green light comes on). Now after I charge it, I have to turn it off/on for about 3 times for it to work. First couple times, it flashes blue and after 3 times, it goes back to the green light.

I am not accidentally turning it off or doing anything different. Perhaps my pod is getting old as I have used the same one for 3 weeks which is amazing for daily, heavy use.
