Etude : les ados moins accros au tabac

EXCLUSIVE.
Study: teens less addicted to tobacco
This is probably an effect of the electronic cigarette. According to one study, people smoke less.

The electronic cigarette is not pushing young people into the arms of tobacco, quite the contrary. This is essentially the conclusion of the annual survey of Paris without tobacco we disclose it. "This is a real surprise," admits Professor Bertrand Dautzenberg, author of this study of more than 13,000 high school students in Paris.

The President of the French Office for the Prevention of smoking was however the first to worry about the incentive effect of the e-cigarette there two years.

According to the survey, young people have taken mass of the new object: in 2014, over 90% of smokers have already shot a Vapoteuse, as 23% of non-smokers. Within a year, experimenting with e-cigarettes which starts 12 years has doubled full swing in 16-17 years: they are 53% have held their hands. In parallel, the number of students lighting a cigarette past the door of their establishment has reduced significantly. When 20% of 12-15 year olds smoked in 2011, they are now 11.2%. Same dynamic in high school, where 33.5% of students smoke in 2014, against 42.9% in 2011.

"There is a change in social image, Bertrand Dautzenberg analysis. With the electronic cigarette, tobacco became a dirty and nerdy product. "" The price increase could play, as the de-normalization of smoking. But what has really changed is the arrival of the electronic cigarette, "adds Gerard Mathern, General Secretary of the French Society for smoking cessation. Tobacco prices rose another 20 cents in January, pushing the package of Marlboro, the most sold in France, the symbolic price of € 7.

The young people have so completely swapped the cigarette against his electronic surrogate? According to the survey of Paris without tobacco if high school students are very likely to have been tested, only 31% of these vapoteurs have used the last thirty days. "It is those who want to stop smoking but who adopt," says Gérard Mathern. From there to say that young people are going to turn their backs on tobacco ... "One must be careful, the attraction of new products is very high in this population, we must see if it is in the long term" , says Beatrice Le Maitre, tobaccologist CHU Caen. "But, if the entry in smoking has declined at least, we can rejoice. »Become smoking in adolescence creates indeed a lifelong addiction, giving the judgment always possible but more difficult. "The impact on health also happens faster, says the tobaccologist: I recently received a 32 year old woman who smoked since the age of 12 years. She was already suffering from respiratory failure. "The Minister of Health, Marisol Touraine, shall submit to the horizon was a plan to fight against smoking, including more trash campaigns aimed at young people.

The French are doing it right. Not only did they quantify that «The electronic cigarette is not pushing young people into the arms of tobacco, quite the contrary,» but also they recognize the fact that vaping is not smoking. In contrast, American ANTZ consider vapers as smokers for the purposes of tobacco use surveys, thus failing to notice the profound and positive impact vaping is having on public health, in particular the massive and unprecedented drop in youth smoking.

I'm recognising this social image shift in the UK now too. Just last night a guy who runs a shop near me was showing off his new cig-a-like and kind of scornfully sneering at those who still smoke. Six months ago the same guy was proud that he got his analogues on the black market and was telling me that it wasn't worth him vaping as he liked smoking and could do it cheaply. So a total reversal in his attitude in six months.

I think that the exponential uptake, and the benefits, are now going to show more and more. Perhaps even the US and UK governments won't be able to pretend e-cigs are not bloody fantastic; they will start to look as ridiculous as that guy in Iraq who couldn't see any tanks if they stay in denial much longer.

Yeah Fourwinds, a year ago I was the only person vaping at a local bar that I play Hold 'em at. Now it's about 30% vaping. Last night I saw some young kid (everyone seems to be a young kid to me anymore), showing his Marlboro Red friend his kit and selling the nenefits. I just smiled.

Dautzenberg's abstract/summary provides very few of his survey's findings, and nothing on youth.

so basically...

Dautzenberg had an anti-eCig agenda, but his study's finding contradicted his beliefs, so he spun the Abstract to fit his preconceived notions?

Somewhat but not entirely. It's the actual numbers that should prove interesting to us, imo. It appears that the 'initiation' isn't as great as some have said, and that would be a crucial point.

In the original post the commentary by a French woman? tends to read it a bit more favorable.... and some of the intent is likely lost in translation from google. I'd question the 'toxic' and how the 'the majority of smokers that tried them didn't like them' statement. That does not appear to be the case, here - at least with those who are trying to quit cigs or in many cases, those 'accidental quits' who were just curious enough to try them. So I'm guessing a better translation might get something a bit more rational.... but then again, perhaps not. lol
