I retired my MNKE batteries, one of which is which is shown in post #5. The discoloration has spread quite a bit since then. The batteries are about 1 1/2 year old and suffering from a lot of voltage drop. On a 0.6 ohm coil at very close to 4.2V, I was getting 3.2V under load. When they were new on the same mod and coil, they were making 3.8V.

A shot of them both with wrapper on:

And with a wrapper off:

There was nothing wet inside, the battery casing is intact and there is no discoloration on the wrapper. It is the way the wrapper sits on the casing :thumb:

BTW, the Sony 18650VTC4 have less voltage drop than these did when new and after almost two months of use I think they are not degrading as fast, but it may be a bit early yet to tell for sure.

Capillary action caused some VG to seep under my Sony batt shrink wrap.

Perhaps some other's batts got exposed to a drop of liquid?

Exactly my thoughts emus. It looks like liquid has seeped under the heat shrink. Most likely to occur at the bottom of a battery than the top depending on how it lays while being used and stored.

I saw this thread a few days ago. The next day I accidentally sat on my mod and it was very hot when I found it.. Battery wasnt fully drained, coil was black, wicks were dark brown, switch insulator wasn't melted, but my mod was very hot top to bottom. I took out the battery and it looked normal, no dark spots....threw it on the charger...the next day I used it with no problems but when I went to switch it out, I found these spots... Notice the 'spikes' and weird pattern it made. Battery is a VTC4 that ive had for about a month.

Did you stand the battery up in the first picture before lying it down? It looks like a liquid has leaked onto the green cloth which appears to have left a stain the same diameter as the exposed metal on the negative or positive end of a battery. If it is still fresh, smelling it might give you an indication if it is eliquid?

No smell.. And I doubt its eliquid because Im using a dripper with no holes on the bottom.

It's strange that the spotting didnt show up until the next day after I overheated the bat...

Also, everyones bats seem to be spotting on the negative end..

Just to rule something out. I use a reo grand. So its a top firing mod. I have the same discoloration. Battery has never heated up. So this can not be from having a bottom firing mod. Its probably just a thin wrap and its adhering much better to the metal casing in that area.

Interesting read. There has to be a common denominator here. I have been vaping for 4.5 years + and have never seen anything of the sort on any of my batteries. The only thing I can think of, is that our batteries are wrapped in shrink wrap, and overheating the battery will cause it to shrink more perhaps thinning the wrap in that area. Hey, I am just guessing here.
