So i started doing some DIY and im a little fearful of 100MG Nic. However, i read somewhere that it would take 60MG of nicotine to kill a full grown adult. I found that here: Nicotine poisoning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Im assuming the latter 60mg because we are all or have all been smokers, therefor we have built up a tolerance to the substance. So assuming you get 3-4 drops on you.. i feel like this is somewhat harmless, you may feel light headed but i doubt anything further. There are about 20-30 drops in a dropper.. I doubt anyone would take a dropper and squeeze this into their mouth.. I hope not anyway.

Well here is where my concerns are; im a bit clumsy at times.. However, say this particular instance im taing all the precautions, using gloves and a mask and my cat jumps up and knocks the entire contents (Lets say 20ml of 100MG) into my lap. this is where i thin the poisioning could potentially occur.. Anyone have this happen or been exposed to a large dose? If so, what did you experience.

Im only curious because for right now i order about 25mg per ml in 8oz bottles. I wanna step my game up but i wanna know what the potential dangers are.

There was a thread a while ago about nicotine not being as toxic as it's been made out to be.

Turns out that all those low numbers being presented were bad science decades ago. The actual LD50 ended up being in the hundreds. But that doesn't mean 100mg/ml isn't dangerous.

And as for spilling a bottle on your lap, you might want to change your pants and take a shower, but it's not like it's going to be instantly absorbed through your skin.

A good counter measure against outside influence though, would be to just always do it in a room with a closed door so you don't have to worry about it as much.

Be safe, have fun.

One important thing about diy is to avoid distractions. The simple answer is to remove the distractions from you, or remove you from the distractions. Nothing against your cat, but the cat does not belong there at that time. Work with small bottles of nic to reduce the degree of any accidents, work in a clean, clutter free workspace.

If I had a large amount of 10% nic, or anything labeled "Dangerous" or "Poison", spilled on me accidentally the only thing I would be experiencing is the shower, clothes and all, Immediately. 100mg nic is not plutonium or anything but it does deserve respect and decisive action if something goes wrong.

What I did was buy 120ml of 100mg nic in solution of PG and diluted it down by mixing it into 120ml of PG and 240ml of VG. This gave me 480ml of 25mg nic in solution of 50/50 PG/VG. Thus I only had to handle the stronger concentration of nicotine once.

Of course one would have to alter the PG and VG volumes to get their desired ratio. I almost always mix my juices at 50/50 10mg. This means I always have to mix nic base, PG and VG along with the flavors but gives me some leeway to adjust the PG/VG ratio but I cannot mix 100% PG or VG.

Gloves and a mask are always a good idea when dealing with higher doses of nicotine. I didnt see you mention any use of eye protection.I would recommend chemical resistant safety glasses at the very least. You dont want to go blind from self admitted clumsiness.

Ive gotten 100mg nicotine on my skin when D.I.Ying (not really my cup of tea) and there was no reason to panic. The nicotine being in a suspension of vg and/or pg slows direct absorption through the skin. I calmly walked to the sink and rinsed with soapy water and that was that.

No ill effects, no headaches, and no dizziness to note.

Bottom line be careful, take proper safety precaution and ALWAYS store chemicals that can be harmful away from pets and children and you should be fine.

This is a really good idea. I like the idea of buying in larger doses, i believe it saves a bit of money. I think ill do this next time i order my nic!

I use nitrile gloves while mixing, it's very easy to see if you get anything on them. I'm always careful. When I'm done mixing, I've never seen any liquid left on the gloves. I still use them though. That 100mg nic is 100mg per ML, so if that 60mg figure is correct, you'd need to get at least .6ml on you and leave it there long enough to absorb into your blood stream. Seems unlikely, but nicotine overdose doesn't sound fun either. Although unlikely, it is possible. Take the safety precautions.

Its 10 percent by volume if anyone is curious.

so to break it down according to strengths:

100mg is 10 percent
36mg is 3.6 percent
24mg is 2.4 percent
18mg is 1.8 percent
12mg is 1.2 percent
06mg is 0.6 percent

There is no reason you have to use 100 mg/ml base. I used to use 48 when I used nic and it's just a bit more expensive than the 100. Really, considering how little DIY juice costs, it's not an issue.

I have spilled a bit of the 48mg base on my skin while I was mixing juice, washed it off in a few minutes and was fine. I actually did not feel anything from it. I think skin penetration is slow and gives you a fair bit of time to wash it off. I would not bathe in it though ;)

I have gotten 100mg/ml on me before. I washed it off right away and didn't have any reaction at all to it. As Ryedan says, if 100 mg/ml makes you nervous, the savings over other strengths aren't that significant. I get 100 to save freezer room. The cost savings are nice, but cost/mg isn't really that much.

Myth 5. "Buying 100mg/ml nicotine is cheaper"

This is conventional wisdom -- but is simply not factual. And typically calculations showing this have not accounted for extra PG/VG needed for dilution, compared higher volume nicotine purchases against lower, or not accounted for overage. When these factors are included, cost differences are typically +/- 1%.

And yes, in some cases lower concentrations are actually cheaper. Here's a link to a recent analysis comparing 48mg and 100mg nicotine.

So the bottom line? Cost and safety are not generally good reasons for higher nicotine concentrations.

I got lost in the math of the post you linked so I did my own math just now. Using Wizard Labs' pricing right now & rounding my numbers to reflect real money spent, to produce a 10ml bottle of 12mg/ml unflavored VG solution, I would have a final cost of .39 using 100mg/ml, .41 using 48mg/ml and .46 using 24mg/ml.

That is only a few cents difference really but it's only a 10ml bottle. If I make 100ml, I move the decimal point to the right time and those pennies turned into dimes & quarters.

I don't buy those tiny size bottles and I have found that Essential Depot is cheaper for VG & PG so my costs are actually much less than those quoted above. Because I am bored, I am going to go back & force myself to figure out what went wrong in your cost analysis.

I'm back--It looks like you're doing a cost vs. spent thing to come up with a certain amount of liquid and throwing the remainder away or buying all new stuff when you want to make another batch. Now my head hurts so I'm going to go refill my tanks with my own DIY liquids that I have no idea how much it costed but I am absolutely sure it didn't cost anywhere near as much as the store bought liquids I started with and I know exactly what's in it--no zombie blood or unicorn tears.

A long time ago I went through and did a detailed cost analysis for how I make my juice, using essential depot pg and VG, and starting with various concentrations of nicotine (using wizard labs as my price source for nic). I came out ahead using the 100mg/ml, and cost savings for larger bottles were a little more than for smaller bottles. The cost savings with more concentrated nic weren't huge though. I'm sure that spreadsheet isn't up to date anymore, and I have no idea what folder it's on or if I even still have it. I haven't looked at the thread that was posted earlier, so I can't comment on why our results were different. At any rate, like I said, I buy 100 mg/ml mostly to conserve freezer space. If I were worried about working with 100 mg/mlthe cost savings wouldn't really be enough to sway me to get it.

 :vapor:

No time but I can post formula latter. But yeah, only fair comparison is to pick a [reasonable] target amount and strength. Then price using bottles that most closely provide the required amount. Then, as you'll have varying amounts of remainder you'll need to prorate for actual costs i.e. $cost * (ml used) / (ml purchased) on both nic and pg/vg.

Enjoy!

Couldn't you just figure cost/ml using each concentration of nicotine and accounting for the cost/ml of pg, VG, and flavors?

Never mind, bad math, lol. I'm too tired.

Kay, I got it now. I had a decimal point in the wrong place.

1 quart VG from essential depot (amazon prime) is $13.47, that's 1.42 cents/ml
1 quart PG from essential depot (amazon prime) is $10.95, that's 1.16 cents/ml

Wizard labs, 500 ml quantities (assuming PG base):
36 mg/ml is $29.29, that's 0.16 cents/mg
100 mg/ml is $56.99, that's 0.11 cents/mg

For 10 ml of 50/50, 18mg/ml using 100 mg/ml:
180 mg nic = 19.8 cents
5 ml VG = 7.1 cents
3.2 ml PG = 3.7 cents
TOTAL = 30.6 cents/10 ml (3 cents/ml)

For 10 ml of 50/50, 18mg/ml using 36 mg/ml:
180 mg nic = 28.8 cents
5 ml VG = 7.1 cents
0 ml PG = 0 cents
TOTAL = 35.9 cents (3.6 cents/ml)

So, for that scenario I come out with a difference of about 5 cents per 10 ml in favor of the 100 mg/ml. I suppose if you were using VG base it would be less of a difference since VG is a little more expensive than PG, but I believe the nic base is the same cost whether you get it in VG or PG.

I think that's right. My math skills deteriorate as the day goes on. ;)

...

The catch is the part just above. You're comparing the purchase of 18,000 mg (36 mg/ml * 500ml) to 50,000 mg (100mg/ml * 500ml) -- and nicotine is cheaper the more you buy. However, to make a set amount, you would instead purchase roughly 1/3 the amount of 100mg vs. 36mg. And, when you do this, cost differences largely disappear. If you'll note in my example (48ml vs. 100ml), the purchase amount of 48ml is twice that of 100ml. I'll post cost comparison of 36mg vs 100mg hopely later this weekend. Cheers!

One overreaching reason to use 100 mg./ml. rocket fuel is saving space in your freezer if you're storing it long-term. I keep my top-load freezer at -15 degrees Farenheit, according to two different thermometers I've used. From what I've read here and there, my rocket fuel should last for many, many years. (Needless to say, everything is in small cobalt-glass bottles with proper caps.)

But I also keep other frozen goods in there, so space is at a premium.

No matter what, it just makes sense to follow these simple rules about handling the high-test stuff:

  1. Nitrile or latex gloves, preferably ones that go halfway up your forearms.
  2. Good ventilation (i.e., an oven hood that vents to the outside, or a fan stuck in an open window).
  3. A large, flat pan like a cookie sheet in case of spills.
  4. NO INTERRUPTIONS! If you're, for instance, transferring from a liter bottle into 60 ml. bottles, let the friggin' phone ring!

All that being said, I once hit myself with a drop of 100 mg./ml. the size of a half-dollar and ignored it. After about 20 minutes, I got a bit dizzy and had a bit of a headache. Another time, I took my sweet time (more than half an hour) transferring a couple of liters to little bottles, without benefit of an open window or an exhaust hood, and wound up with a headache that went away in about an hour. In neither case was the headache enough to reach for the aspirin bottle. Pretty minor.
