Not to mention that CA also charges you a property tax based on the value of your car when you register your car and renew it each year. So the cost to register your car can be several hundred dollars each year.

The last time I purchased and registered a car in California, it was a brand new Toyota 4Runner. The sticker price was about 30k and the first year car registration was over $250. Each year when I reregistered the car, the fee dropped by about $20 to account for the drop in value of the car.

I think once the car is over 5 years old, then the property tax goes away and you just pay the registration fee which is around $36(?) a year.

When I registered my car here, it's a 2001 Esteem, it was $348, with a value of $1200. I'm hoping for only $36 this year :)
They charge for smog check and anything else they can add on for lol

Yeah, that stupid emissions test is what's hurting us. It's gonna cost us more than Jim's truck is valued at to do the repairs to get it to pass. SUCKAGE!!!!

Here in NY, the registration fee used to be $24 every two years (you have to get the car inspected every year, but the registration is good for two years). But about 8 years ago or so, the state was running out of money, so they decided that they were going to redesign and reissue new license plates to everyone, so the registration fee was going to increase by $100. The state got sued and the court decided that the state could not force people to get new license plates. So the state instead decided to increase the biannual registration fee to $115 instead. If you choose, you can switch to the new style plates, but they will charge you a one time $50 fee for the new plate with a new number, or $150 fee if you want the new plate but keep your same plate number.

I don't know if they changed the rule but in California they used to do the smog check and if it failed, you paid the lesser of the cost to repair the car to get it to pass smog, or $300.

In NY, only New York City and Long Island requires a smog check, which costs around $40. The rest of the state just requires an inspection which just verifies that your lights work, no check engine light, brakes work. The inspection runs $21.

NJ sucks. They do a smog check, but it can only be done by an inspection station owned and operated by the state. So you actually have to call them and make an appointment, and then go and wait on line.

Only paying $300 would be much better than the $1300 we're looking at! The emissions check is part of the yearly "safety inspection" required in our county.

So you had health insurance from July through November/December? What about January through June? Technically, I believe that if you didn't have insurance from January through June, that's what you got dinged for, not that you didn't pay enough when you did have insurance.
We only didn't have insurance in June and December. We only had Obamacare for July-November and that's where they got us. I am seriously ...... about it, too. I would have NEVER signed us up for that crap if I had known how expensive it was going to be!!! I would have paid the one-time $400 fine and been done with it. This is NOT how the Affordable Healthcare Act is supposed to be. It's all screwed up. I just hope it gets fixed as soon as we have a new president, whoever it is. It doesn't seem to be a priority for anyone, though. :(

Bwahahaha! I totally gotta do that now!

It was another local shop's grand opening. I don't even bother going to the grand openings anymore, they used to be nice, now it's chit like that.

That's what I'm scared of. Haven't done my taxes yet cuz I was unemployed from Jan till Oct with no insurance at all last year. Why do I need insurance? I never go to the doctor and when I do, I pay the flippin bill. I'm not gonna pay bookoo bucks a month to support illegal immigrants going to the ER.
It's WAY cheaper to take the loss on your taxes. It's a one-time charge, not a ridiculous amount of money every month for unusable insurance. Even if we had had a catastrophic event it would have cost us $10,500 each before the insurance kicked in, so it was a complete waste of money. We never used it except for for prescriptions, which were nowhere near $777 a month! It just makes me sick.

Did you do the return yourself? Have you filed it yet? You shouldn't be hit with the penalty as it only applies if you did not have insurance for longer than 3 consecutive months. Anything under is considered temporary and you are exempt for that period.

If you've already filed, you can always amend your return.

Ugh.... Sitting at the repair shop with my son's car. Apparently the rear brakes had been making noise and no one thought that it should be looked at. So the rear brake calipers are frozen. New calipers, new rotors, new pads, and the struts are bad so four new struts. Will be $1,600 for this repair. Apparently the rear brakes has been bad for quite a while, because the front brake pads are barely worn.

YIKES!! Shaun just had to shell out $300 for axle and brake work. I tried to tell him he needs to keep up on that stuff (he's driving my old 1999 Kia Sephia!!) but apparently it takes a big repair bill for it to actually sink in, lol. I hope he is a lot more attentive now. He has a great mechanic and it would have cost him a LOT more if it had gone to a different shop, but for a kid with a minimum wage job even $300 was an expensive lesson.

I think the hardest thing is getting the kids to learn to understand when their cars are not "right" so it can be addressed before it gets worse.

I totally agree. Shaun went through 4 fan belts before he finally got the last one adjusted when it started squealing. He just kept ignoring it until it broke!

Well that sucks.

Hmm, I've never not noticed.

Right? I notice stuff in Shaun's car when he starts it up to go to work! I drove that car for 15 years, though, so I know when something's up. Now I want HIM to hear the differences, too!

Or typhoid?
Remember the shot that left ya with a dead arm for three days, and everybody just had to remind ya of it by slapping the shot spot o_O
We had to get some weird shots before going to Germany (both times) that were like that. Hurt for days!!
