i was reading a DIY for extracting (not here) nic and tobacco flavoring by soaking tobacco in 190 proof (95% alcohol)liquor for a few hrs, sifting the tobacco out using a filter then either letting the liquid sit and thicken with time (days often) or adding a small amount of heat and taking only a few hrs to thicken.

anywho im stuck in cali right now and no less then 6 hrs from any state lines and as some of you may or may not know the legal limit of alcohol in cali is 151 proof (75.5% alcohol). do you think that 151 would work just the same. im sure it has more impurities than everclear or golden grain (both 190 proof) but ....... idk i was looking for someone elses opinion.

srry id post a link to the recipie but ..... im fairly certain that it breaks forum rules ;)

----------edit-----------

nvrmnd i forgot that most state laws dont apply on base. ill just get some at the PX

The thread that explains that method of extraction is somewhere in this forum already...I read it here months ago and tried it...It works, but the amount you end with and the taste and consitancy of it isnt really worth it...Thats just my opinion of course...But it can also be a little dangerous ..... You MUST use an electric hot plate for the heating process and it should not be done inside as its extremely flamable and the fumes are pretty dangerous as well....So if you do it, be VERY careful...

You can post the recipe here, you just can't post it in any other sub-forum.

To answer your question though, yes you can use 151 proof instead of 190 proof. It's just that with a higher proof you will get a higher concentration of nicotine and the nicotine will be extracted faster. Keep in mind though, the lower the proof the more impurities the liquor has, which could possibly effect atomizer life-span, although I have no idea how much of a difference there would really be between 151 and 190 as far as depositing impurities on your atomizer.

If you really want 190 proof though, you could take the 151 proof and try to distill it.

Standard distillation by evaporation would obviously be very dangerous without the proper equipment and experience, but there may be another option.

I'm a micro-brewer, and whenever I brew some hard cider I always make some "Apple Jack." Apple Jack is hard cider that has been freeze distilled to make it more alcoholic. Freeze distillation is a process by which alcohol is separated from water using solidification as opposed to standard distillation, which utilizes evaporation. Because ethanol freezes at much lower temperatures than water, by putting an alcoholic beverage in a freezer you can freeze the water while the alcohol remains in a liquid state. Once this has happened, you can scoop out the ice and you will have a higher concentration of alcohol in the beverage. This process can be repeated several times until ice no longer forms. How many rounds of freeze distillation you can do depends on how cold the freezer is.

I hope this helps.
Honestly, I'm not sure if you could get any more water to freeze in a 151 proof liqour, but you can try. Your best bet would be to use a commercial freezer because they can get much colder then household freezers. So if you or a friend of your's happen to work at a restaurant or someplace else that has an industrial freezer, put the liquor into a box, tape the box up, and put it somewhere in the freezer where it can go unnoticed.

Vegetable glycerin is just as effective although it's a great deal slower. What you are describing is a tincture of tobacco. Grain alcohol is one way herbs are extracted for ingestion or topical applications. Vegetable glycerin does work just as well, although it takes 20 days or so to extract nicotine, etc. from tobacco. I have done this with Oden Snus (Swedish snus that have no complex additives at all) and gotten good results.

You can see more about this in a thread down a little bit. It's the 'Behold: The simplest (or something like that...).
