24g kanthal - problems 28g- seems perfect?

I only use mechanicals and RDAs. Just got my Mephisto rda in the mail. I've heard reviewers talk about how much "22g wire" it can fit.

I have used everything from 22g-32g kanthal wire. 28g is what I use the most. I most often use dual/triple strand 28g wire dual coil builds. It heats up fast, good vapor production, etc.

Whenever I try anything like 24g compared to 28g, I simply cannot get the thicker wire to heat up fast enough (or heat up to a high enough temperature to vape AT ALL). I usually try the same thing, dual parallels with something like 24g or even triple strand with that wire, doesn't work. Should I be using single strand 24g duals? Maybe my problem is that using 2-3 strands of 24g kanthal in each coil takes too long to heat up- a lot more wire, and thick wire, to heat up so it takes forever. My guess was that by using 2-3 strands of 24g I would be cutting the resistance and it would heat up faster.

I'm wondering with my new Mephisto rda (known for HUGE post holes), how can I take advantage of the extra large post holes and come up with a build that will work? When does lower gauge/thicker wire have an advantage to something like 28g?

Lastly, anyone have a preference over kanthal? ie: nichrome, gplat, chadsters hotwire?

Chadster's hotwire is just a branding scheme. It sounds cool so it must be better. It's just the same wire. Kanthal and nichrome achieve the same goal but nichrome has a lower melting point and also slightly lower resistance per foot than kanthal. I've heard the "nichrome gives a metallic taste" and "kanthal gives a metallic taste" arguments. I think this is from people with sensitive palates. You're correct that the thicker wire takes longer to heat up. Even moreso if you're twisting it. There is more surface area. I think 26-28 gauge is the point where you still get good heat and low resistance combination.

Shortest possible legs on the coils. 2-2.5mm ID tight coils and make sure you got the best battery you got in it. Check to see they heat from the center. You did not mention the mech your using. A good copper mech will help a little. To many turns will slow it down. I can't imagine going over 8-10 turns. I don't go below .6 ohms.

I personally love 24GA wire. I have found that 7 wraps on an 1/8" drill bit is the ..... It heats up quick and burns much hotter. The slow heat up time just comes with the territory of a thicker wire. You can run .24 ohm build with 28GA and heat up really nice, but that same .24 ohm build with 24GA will be much slower. The thicker the wire the lower the build needs to be i have found out. .18 - .2 ohms is a good build with 24GA.
