Chris, I'm guessing you might be a relatively newer vapor. It is common for new vapors to find vapor irritating to their throat and lungs, often resulting in either hard coughing or sore throat. This is common and in general will become less of a problem as your body becomes more acclimated to vapor. You may not remember, but it took your body some amount of time to adjust to cigarette smoke, too.
Be aware that it is not necessary to inhale the vapor into your lungs to absorb it's nicotine. We absorb nicotine in vapor differently than that in cigarette smoke. Much like a pipe or cigar tobacco smoker, we absorb nicotine in vapor in the mouth and throat, and nose. Perhaps a modification of inhalation technique will help.
Take a drag from your vaporizor as if you were sucking on a milkshake. Slow and long, consistant, for 3 - 6 seconds, hold in your mouth momentarily, and then either inhale into your lungs or exhale part from your mouth, part from your nose.
After years of smoking, your taste buds have been damaged and your sense of tastes are most likely off. Using your nose to assist with "tasting" flavors can allow you to more enjoy your e-liquid flavors. So make sure to exhale some of the vapor through your nose.

If you are like me, you will find low resistance (1.5 -2.0 ohm) delivery device to give too warm of a vape and be too harsh on your throat. I prefer to use higher resistance for a cooler vape, and use single coils and not dual coils.
