3/23/09 | Senator seeks to halt sales of 'e-cigarettes'

I think that with all the tax revenue the government makes off of real cigarettes they really don't like the idea of an alternative they have no real way to tax. Therefore its only a matter of time before we see the sale of e-cigs in and out of the US banned.

I don't want to come off as a downer but honestly when the government continues to keep cigarettes legal but always push for the idea that they are so bad for you all that tells me is that the legality of cigarettes is simply a front to cash in on the ridicules amount of taxes on them.

Think about it. If people who smoked simply stopped buying cigarettes where would the government get all the tax they need to pay for all the programs the government funds with the tax?

Its all bureaucracy so they can nickle and dime every tax payer they can, especially during the economy we are in. Someone has to pay for a large chunk of that recent stimulus package.

Sorry if I have missed it elsewhere but an issue which I think should be raised with the FDA and the US govt over a proposed ban is that of the effects of second hand smoke.

It has certainly been an issue here in the UK. The authorities are trying hard to ignore it but cannot hide from the fact that banning cigarettes in pubs and clubs has forced smoking back into the home.

By banning the sale of e-cigarettes and hence their use the FDA will over the years be subjecting countless thousands (if not tens of thousands) of children to the effects of second hand smoke.

The way I see it the FDA is saying that they want to protect the lives of smokers who were already killing themselves by smoking normal cigarettes before their conversion to the electronic variety.

In the process they will be willfully harming the health of the innocent - the young.

As I see it a ban would be nothing short of a crime against humanity and should be treated as such.

And if the FDA want proof of the difference between smoking e-cigarettes and normal cigarettes in the home send them here.

Before I converted to e-cigs I needed to wash the curtains in my home office every six months. They turned from a rosy red/pink to brown in that period. After 12 months of e-smoking the curtains are still rosy red/pink.

That has been raised. The answer to that from organized "tobacco control" is that smokers are committing child abuse. So I'm not enthused about going there further.

Dear Senator,
I recently became aware that you have requested the FDA put a halt to the sales of electronic cigarettes to the public. As an E smoker myself, I am deeply troubled that this will impact my overall health. As an American Citizen, my rights to vape may be taken away due to this, forcing me to return using analog cigarettes. I am concerned as a mother of two small children with our overall health, and quality of life. I feel by using the electronic cigarette, my kids are no longer subjected to secondhand smoke. I have seen a great improovement of my health, and hope by using this device it will allow me to quit the use of nicotine all together. Please reconsider your decision for all the parents who want to continue to better their own health and remain healthy enough to enjoy their own children growing up.

My letter to the Senator:

Dear Senator Lautenberg,

I wanted to write you a letter concerning your recent proposal to ban E-Cigarettes for the purpose of further testing. I would like to inquire about what you personally know/feel about E-Cigarettes and what it means to you. I also would like to advocate that this matter is of the utmost importance to many thousands of us that use these products, either for alternative use or cessation. I myself began smoking at the age of 11. I can say that after several failed attempts to quit smoking real cigarettes with patches and other nicotine replacement therapies, that the E-Cigarette has done the job well, for many of us. I have been cigarette free for over 4 months now, and have noticed remarkable results. My lungs, sinuses, body, and overall health have improved considerably. This is the case for many, if not all of those who "Vape," and is a means to an end for many of us. It is however recognized by the community of E-Smokers (or "Vapers") that this is not necessarily designed to be a cessation device, nor is it marketed as such. Bearing that in mind, we also understand that there is a concern for prolonged use. I am not opposed to the testing of these devices in any way, as I would certainly like to know more about them personally. However from my own experience with the products I have not had any negative reactions or side effects from them. I must assert that a ban on E-Cigarettes would not only cause the successes of this device to be reverted, but would likely also cause many of us to fall back into the highly carcinogenic tobacco industry. As an individual who is not a resident of New Jersey, I humbly urge you to consider the tens of thousands of people that have found a means to better health. Also to assist us with positive alternatives for the things in our lives that contribute to our overall health and the health of those around us. Please understand also that the substances used in the nicotine liquid are all approved by the FDA for human consumption. As well, there is documented scientific studies on the contained substances (Nicotine, Propylene Glycol or food grade glycerin, Natural Flavoring) that has been found to be non toxic (the exception being nicotine itself,) including toxicity reports while being heated to the temperatures that are required for vaporization. Please take this into consideration and research thoroughly when investigating my claims. On behalf of all E-Smokers, I thank you for your consideration and interest regarding this matter.

Respectfully,

Jeremy Zeigler

Guys,

I am sorry to post hear but I can not open a new thread jet.

Today, our local newspaper (in Colombia) has an article that said (My english is not the best one):

"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of USA have found that smoking people save money to the insurance companies because of their early death"

I couldn't find the original document but the web page is cdc.gov (not allowed to post URLS)

Maybe someone can do the search for that since my english is not the best one.

Best

Awesome guys! I signed the petition and wrote this letter to both the senitor proposing the ban and my senitors as well. posted

I had just read where a senator from New Jersey had recently proposed a ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes. I wanted to contact you and your offices to personally and ask you to vote against such a measure.

I personally had been addicted to cigarettes since before I was 18 and recognize the effects of first hand and second hand smoking to be quite harmful as I have had alot of health complications from my addiction. Since quitting smoking I have investigated electronic smoking as an alternative to "analog" (regular) cigarettes. There is very little research done in the area of the nicotine vapors produced by these devices, however, the science behind the process is very sound and although I do recognize that breathing anything that isn't air can be harmful, it is wrong to ban a safer alternative without research. This product is not given a fair trial of innocent until proven guilty.

The ingenuity to produce a health risk minimizing alternative to normal "vice" is a step in the right direction. If a medication to treat a disease has side effects and other risks, its important to develop other drugs to take its place. Likewise should be our recreational substances such as alcohol and tobacco. To develop an alcohol that cannot damage the liver would be an amazing break through. Not even overlook the small business that have sprouted up the past several years in the united states to sell such devices, and the possibility for American enhancement and development in that field. A ban on electronic cigarettes stifles the American spirit on many levels and is important then to fight against such a ban.

Dear Mr. Raptis:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about increasing the federal tax on tobacco products. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.

As you may know, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) covers medical expenses for children whose families do not qualify for Medicaid and cannot afford private insurance. This important program is a proven success, covering 6.1 million children across the country each year and more than 125,000 in New Jersey. CHIP is paid for by a federal excise tax on tobacco products.

The “Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act” (P.L. 111-3) was signed into law on February 4, 2009. Please be assured that I will keep your concerns in mind should the Senate again consider legislation related to the sale of tobacco products.

Thank you again for writing.

Sincerely,
cid:1__=0ABBFF08DFFD37928f9e8a93df938@senate.gov

I wrote once and senatoe answer twice. This is the second respond from him and its different (if I remember well)

Greetings….

Writing to ask if anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area would be interested in being interviewed for a short news video I am putting together on the topic of e-cigarettes and the pending legislation that they are facing.

I will be conducting interviews over the next week and I am open to hearing any and all testimony from e-cigarette users. I've already gotten some very articulate perspectives from some worthwhile sources and I would like to add to that with more first hand accounts regarding use of the products. Although this is a freelance project, I am speaking with some editors now for this to run as a 3-5 minute video piece on a relevant news website.

Please get in touch if you have any interest. I'm happy to set up a time and location that works well for all involved.

Thanks,
