Our grandchild Zackie passed away this afternoon. A little over two weeks ago he suffered severe brain damage, when he just stopped breathing. My daughter and son-in-law finally made the decision to let him go as he was completely unresponsive. His life support machines were shutdown. He died peacefully in Bridget's (our daughter) arms with my wife and I there. A parent should NEVER have to make that decision. But it was the right one.

Zack had seven operations and survived liver cancer in his 22 months. Even with all his suffering, he would look up at us with a smile and a laugh. Whenever I have a complaint, I hope I can remember my grandson. It's a cliche, but he is gone but definitely not forgotten.

I`m just a precious little one
who didn`t make it there.
I went straight to be with Jesus,
but I`m waiting for you here.
Many dwelling here where I live,
waited years to enter in.
Struggled through a world of sorow,
a world marred with pain and sin.
Thank you for the life you gave me,
it was brief but don`t complain.
I have all Heaven`s Glory,
suffered none of earth`s great pain.
Thank you for the name you gave me.
I`d have loved to bring it fame.
But if I`d lingered in earth`s shadows,
I would have suffered just the same.
So sweet family-don`t you sorrow.
Wipe those tears and chase the gloom.
I went straight to Jesus` arms
from my loving Mother`s womb.

    Day 18

Yet another brutal weekend has passed, preceded by what appears to be an equally brutal week of painful sobriety. The physical pains have peaked, but still persists. The real enemy, aside from Cobra Command, is a volatile mixture of boredom and distant memories resurfacing to expunge their revenge upon my psyche.

My alcoholism was not without reason, it was to suspend the gory portions of my life away from my mind. Now that barrier is gone, and those wicked days of my youth surge upon my Id. Or Ego....or Eggo....maybe i'm thinking of pancakes...whatever it's called. The part of your mind that handles emotions like fear, loathing, hatred, doubt, constipation, itchiness, and dry-mouth...probably ice-cream headaches and IBS too...at the very least Gout! I may also be reading the side-effects of my allergy medicine, who knows at this point.

The sunlight torments me like a prison-yard spotlight, and not the good kind that breaks out into a song and dance number; the Shawshank type, where the warden is just putting out his cigarette and walking off all dramatic like. I mean how awesome was that movie? It's the whole reason I self-narrate my life Morgan Freeman style, it's very soothing. How did it not win best picture? Did anyone catch the Oscars this weekend? Teh Lameness was overbearing....but i digress...also, i snack a bit on a coworkers salsa...I need a breakfast taco.

    *one.....four....seven breakfast taco's later:

I think the last working vestiges of my liver try to absorb the bacon grease in hopes of returning to life, it won't work, but it's not a bad way to go. Portions of my body wracked by years of alcohol abuse are beginning to heal, and beginning to reign their own revenge upon me. Aches and pains are subtle, but they are there scheming and lurking, like an ex-girlfriend that was crazy good at both sex and being crazy. If my internal organs knew how to use a taser or aerosol can and a lighter, i would be in real trouble.

Is there police protection from one's self? That may be a pretty good market segment for me to corner.
