I just found a really great question on 4-2-10 by warrior58D with a super response by DonDaBoomVape re: 510 cartomizer filling. It was really timely!

I'm so new to this, and spent a bit on refillable carts, trekking to stores for fluval, polyfil, exacto knives, paper clips and what not, proffitting on the learning curves of those vaporers who came before me. Then, I stumbled on a post in the e-juice section regarding refillable cartos for the 510. I guess they were only available for the KR808D before. I can't believe how I missed this! Today, I immediately ordered some empty cartomizers per DonDaBoomVape's information on where to buy as well.

Previous to this, I also read ScottBee's entire post including replies on battery voltage testing and that took me almost all of a night since I've never been a technically inclined sort. It was an education to say the least, and timely as well. If you can get beyond the sciency part of ohms etc, or rather, not get too lost in it for us type of people, it has a lot of good information thanks to his testing.

Anyway, this is getting long winded. What I'm trying to ask is this:

From all the info I've read, I'm gathering people like the 510 better mostly because of the atomizer for various reasons (direct dripping, not as leak prone, etc). People even suggest using a Kr808D battery with an adapter for a more powerful vape.
So this cartomizer seems like a godsend especially since I can refill it! I've been tired of the mess I'm making, yet want to stop analogs in the worst way. But, won't that in essence, be changing the whole anatomy of the 510 and morphing it almost into its counterpart - - the 808D?

Also, if anyone takes the time to wade through this all, I want to know how I can clean one without popping the cap since I know the "condom" method now of refilling it at least in theory. I've read that sometimes the cap doesnt fit back in and I really want that cap to vape on. For me, no cap, or smoking on the rubber cap doesn't seem appealing.

Thanks for any offered expertise! :)

Since you've flattered me, I suppose I should be the one to answer this.;) [Thanks for those compliments BTW.]

Actually, wisp, I'm not entirely clear what model you currently are vaping. I guess it's the Joye 510. If so, you should know that the 510's greatest strength is its vapor production: outstanding! And the manual switch on its battery is virtually perfect.

The carts aren't very large, it doesn't necessarily deliver the best flavor or throat hit, and its battery is a relatively wimpy 180 mAh (i.e., frequent recharging).

To address battery recharging, you can:

  • Use a PCC (works well, 510 batts recharge quickly)
  • Improve the mAh somewhat with a mega batt or Kr8 batt (both 280 mAh)
  • Improve it a bit more with an XL Kr8 batt (380 mAh)
  • Improve it significantly with the eGO/Tornado (650 mAh)
  • Improve it even more with a mod (320* to 3000 mAh)
* Don't blame me that the mAh of Joye Stick, Precise, and VP1 batts is not much of an improvement.

To address cartridge limitations, you can:

  • Use Titan mega carts and attys
  • Drip (and get a SuperT T-tip or NHaler Drip Tip to make that more convenient)
  • Use the new 510 cartomizers (especially the larger capacity ones)
  • Forget the 510 and go Kr8 all the way or use the huge-cart DSE601 e-Pipe
To increase oomph (i.e., intensity of vapor/flavor/TH), you can:

  • Use an adapter to stick the 510 atty on a true 3.7V (up to 4.2V) Kr8 batt
  • Get a 5+V mod
  • Get a 5V passthrough ($20 to $80), not the inline battery one
  • Use the new low-resistance 510 attys from NHaler or Totally Wicked
And you can mix and match. For example, NHaler's Magnum is a low-resistance 510 atty and adapter on an XL Kr8 battery.

As for cartomizer cleaning, I don't believe in it. Refilling them is already stretching the manufacturer's intended use. After doing that two to four times, throw it away and use another $2 cart.

And then there is the really radical, outside-the-box approach: Join me in the land of penstyles. For me, the 510 is great for blowing vapor, cartomizers are convenient, but for optimum flavor/vapor/TH and vaping enjoyment, the Joye302 atty (with adapter) on a Kr8 battery (actual 3.7V+) is heaven.

I get no kick from 510.
It is a vapor machine, yes I know.
But throat hit, I'm telling you true:
Only from Joye three oh two!
