That's one of the things that I felt might be causing my problems, rolling the wick too tight. From what I could see (and my eyes aren't what they used to be) there was no gap in the center. In my first attempt it curved nicely and had no kinks, I suspect because it was rolled so tight it couldn't kink. On subsequent, looser rolls I had kinking problems which I hope to fix with Dan's latest recommendation of leaving the paperclip in place during the bend. I haven't had the opportunity to try that yet, but intend to when I can make it back home.
