pdibbie has a contact mod thread so I felt left out & wanted one too. I'm not a cloud chaser or a resistance junkie.
My mod is not a voltage or resistance mod though like the other recent ones. I'll be sharing about firing pin arcing.
First off, this is for my personal Reos & only mine. I'm not encouraging this type of mod, infact I strongly encourage no need for it, & I will not share my source or info for what I used (which must be purchased in bulk anyway), not even pdib has been told. By me posting this here means I can not do this for anyone & I wouldn't anyway. Don't ask, won't tell, sorry.
I have mentioned in the past I don't have concerning arcing issues. I don't use Noalox & I have never filed one of my firing pins. Guess I'm lucky? But if my firing pins are bone dry they will arc. Not so much as when I firmly press the button but sparks can be seen when I release. After I add ProGold, no sparking at all.
When a member asked me a few months ago if I had an idea about this I did but that idea wouldn't have worked so that was the end of that. But I never stopped thinking about it & have been curious. I did not use a better electrically conductive metal, wasn't my concern, & I did not want to alter the functionality of the Robert's design. Oh and Robert, I apologize for doing this to one of your awesome creations, I can relate to how that feels.
I used a similar material to the stock pin, spring tempered stainless steel. For those that know, it can be risky to drill thin metals like this especially so small if it's not done correctly. So I made a jig, well two, the other one is on it's way to pdib....early Xmas present.
(Again, please do not ask, they won't be made by me again.)
My firing pin makes full contact across the top of the button top now....
Numbers? I don't have any numbers but it works great even though my contact shape came out a bit different than what I was after. The best part is that I have absolutely no arcing with absolutely nothing applied to the firing pin or battery. It's only been a day & I'll see after the weekend of heavy use.
I'm very happy with it but I won't be installing them in my other Reos right away. FYI this Grand was due for a rebuild so I decided to do the experiment on it. Just received another rebuild kit but it will be months before my other Grand may even need a rebuild.
This was for entertainment & informational purposes only.
Again, please don't ask, I will not tell. Thank you for your understaning. Thanks for viewing & I hope you enjoyed today's program on public access.
Ok pdibz, the next scheduled showing is yours.......
