pdibbie has a contact mod thread so I felt left out & wanted one too. I'm not a cloud chaser or a resistance junkie. :p My mod is not a voltage or resistance mod though like the other recent ones. I'll be sharing about firing pin arcing.

First off, this is for my personal Reos & only mine. I'm not encouraging this type of mod, infact I strongly encourage no need for it, & I will not share my source or info for what I used (which must be purchased in bulk anyway), not even pdib has been told. By me posting this here means I can not do this for anyone & I wouldn't anyway. Don't ask, won't tell, sorry. ;)

I have mentioned in the past I don't have concerning arcing issues. I don't use Noalox & I have never filed one of my firing pins. Guess I'm lucky? But if my firing pins are bone dry they will arc. Not so much as when I firmly press the button but sparks can be seen when I release. After I add ProGold, no sparking at all.

When a member asked me a few months ago if I had an idea about this I did but that idea wouldn't have worked so that was the end of that. But I never stopped thinking about it & have been curious. I did not use a better electrically conductive metal, wasn't my concern, & I did not want to alter the functionality of the Robert's design. Oh and Robert, I apologize for doing this to one of your awesome creations, I can relate to how that feels.

I used a similar material to the stock pin, spring tempered stainless steel. For those that know, it can be risky to drill thin metals like this especially so small if it's not done correctly. So I made a jig, well two, the other one is on it's way to pdib....early Xmas present. ;) (Again, please do not ask, they won't be made by me again.)

My firing pin makes full contact across the top of the button top now....

Numbers? I don't have any numbers but it works great even though my contact shape came out a bit different than what I was after. The best part is that I have absolutely no arcing with absolutely nothing applied to the firing pin or battery. It's only been a day & I'll see after the weekend of heavy use.

I'm very happy with it but I won't be installing them in my other Reos right away. FYI this Grand was due for a rebuild so I decided to do the experiment on it. Just received another rebuild kit but it will be months before my other Grand may even need a rebuild.

This was for entertainment & informational purposes only. ;) Again, please don't ask, I will not tell. Thank you for your understaning. Thanks for viewing & I hope you enjoyed today's program on public access.

Ok pdibz, the next scheduled showing is yours....... :vapor:

Looking good, DZ! I'm super eager for the arrival of a certain package! (sad to say, not today). It's gonna be hard to not just do what you did; cause that looks like the perfect solution. In the interest of putting these tools to good use, and . . .. . "science" :p . . . I am determined to try a few other things before copying you. (just checked tracking . . . . looks like Sat., mail man comes around dinnertime.)

Thanks! :D

Hey DZ can you make two of those of me?

Hey, that's not funny, I'm going to get expelled from school again!

Ya never know, it may just show up tomorrow like last time. I'm anxious to see yours creations....being so creative with coils and all. :)

Risky? What's wrong with a piece of thin metal helicoptering on a drill press? Like THAT's ever happened before... ;)

Ha! I'm glad some people know! Damn helicopters!

These are the only helicopters I like to make....

What did you use to roll the end like that? Seems easy enough to make myself. Wonder if a flat top would work fine in there now............

Jeremy, I actually wish I had gotten mine flat, I think better contact surface area would make for an even more effective circuit

pdlib & DZ, glad you are jumping into it!

Come December (mom is visiting) I'll send you some silver pins as a gift (already mentioned that to pdlib)

For the moderators, I'm not selling anything, just a gift to two people here

Dude! that is too cool, dhomes!!! . . . . or I could just come down and pick them up . . . . . . ?

. . . . . . or I could do some quick reading about traveler's safety in Venezuela, and invite you up instead. . . . . :|

You know I offered it already over PM, problem is distance / time

Unless you want to pay the FedEx the international shipping, but that'd be rather pricey

You did offer; but I thought you meant, "wouldn't it be nice" VS "I'm going to" . . ..

. . . . is it true? Does every other tourist get choked until they pass out, and then robbed?

the problem with flat is, if it doesn't land flat you get very little contact area. With Dizzie's shape, there, you're bound to get a good "line" of contact.

DZ works better than pointy for sure, I'm mostly referring to flat across (perpendicular to direction on bar)

I'm playing with a kick 2 on mine today though, and the only problem I find is that the travel is VERY small, less than a mm

That I can fix by shortening the bolt at the bottom, but still, with the flat bar it would have been perfect

Crime rate is certainly higher than in most parts of the USA, but it's not like you get robbed as soon as you get out of the plane or every other day. Can't say it happens though

The REO my wife has been using is like this . . .. it's got MNKEs in it, and the tip of the firing pin has been filed so many times (from when I was subΩ-ing on it) that you may as well call it flat. She has no problems with it. Works fine. (~1-1.2Ω)

I'm pretty sure what I'm going to try first is a shape like Dizzie's, only folded just once (turned down for the standard 90deg turn, then folded back up once) and then I'm going to sheath it with my brass shim (which will run, top and bott., all the way back to the tail and be drilled for mounting as well).

the problem with flat is, if it doesn't land flat you get very little contact area. With Dizzie's shape, there, you're bound to get a good "line" of contact.

But with the how thin the bar is it will flex(or roll)to make a solid contact line when you press the button. After all the button is round so there is only 1 small contact point to the bar so it would allow it to flex and make a solid contact
