So I'm hearing mechanical mods are (maybe) the way to go with gennys. What's a good, not too expensive mechanical mod. I'm not talking about a show piece that costs several hundred dollars and are never in stock. Is there such a thing as a good quality mechanical that won't break the bank? Also, what are some of the negatives to using an unprotected device. If I get a short on my provari, it just errors out and doesn't hurt the device. What happens if there is a short using a mechanical device?

I've always shot for higher resistance on my coils because I figured I'd get better batt life. what kind of batt life will a mechanical mod give at that low of a resistance? Would I have to go back to charging batts every hour? To those that use mechanical mods with gennys.. what about voltage regulation? I quit using box mods long ago because I hated that the voltage went down as the batt discharged.

Educate me a little here.. do I actually need a mechanical device to get a great vape out of a genny? I'm pretty happy with the setups I have but .. well, I'm curious.

I've been researching this a lot lately - also looking for something to use my RBA on as cheaply as possible.

I am torn between buying this:
Mountain Vaporizer 18650 Battery Tube

Or building one from a copper pipe - check on YouTube and in the Modding forum here for examples and tutorials. I am leaning towards building one - not for the $$ savings because $17 is definitely reasonable . . but I feel like one I build would be more rugged and I'd gain knowledge building it . .and could then fix or refine it.

The APV referenced from Mountain Vapor is a very nice "semi" mechanical. That is...it IS mechanical, but there is a wire connection to the switch from the 510 connector. Not a deal breaker, but it could be a "weak link". Also, if you like that you might can find something similar here http://www.smokerevolt.com/18650-XL-Squire-Tube-Mod-_p_443.html (not affiliated, but I did get their 18350 Squire mod..which is the mini model of the tube mod we're talking about. Good vendor, I like them!). If you nose around that site some more in their Personal Vaporizer section, you'll see some other fully mechanical mods in the mix.

Another place you can get very solid and fully mechanical mods is at Discount Vapers. There is the LavaFire "Rocket", and the Tec Mod telescope among them. Both are totally mech. No wires at all. Can be fully disassembled. Very solid and reliable at very good prices. Here is a link for the mechanicals at DV Mechanical Mods (again, not affiliated, but really like this vendor...excellent products).

No..you won't have to change out batteries all the time. They are basically just unregulated mods so that whatever battery you put in there is what power you are going to get for the life of the charge.

no, you will get more flexibility for using low resistance setups though.

check out the new smoktech 'the natural" grabbing some attention and very sturdy SS with diff battery options. getting one just for easier no oxy wick setups before tossing them on my provari. on preorder now.

on a mech if you have a short as long as the button is fired you still have a short and if that isnt fixed something will overheat, this is also why most mech's have locking fire pins..
but with the provari you go through tantrums trying to get rid of a short because you keep getting E1's before you can fix it.
if you already know geni's then you know how a good coil should look when fired. and the set up becomes a bit easier in that regard.

most peeps who go low res on a mech are looking for the extreme wattage, it doesnt mean you have to. some say they can see the difference as the battery drains others disagree. i prefer my proV but a good mech is always a decent addition to a geni arsenal.

You don't need a mechanical to get a great vape out of a genny but you CAN increase your vapor and nicotine delivery with one.

My CCTS (GG clone I got under $30) runs an AGA-T+ with a 0.8 ohm twisted 32 gauge coil on 500 mesh. A fresh battery gives me over 22 watts with that set up and it hits like a freight train.

Other cheap mech mods include the Lavafire Extension or Rocket. The Smoktek Telescope. The TEC mod. The Smoktek Natural.

Battery time tends to be better simply because there is no regulation circuit which takes electricity to power.

Thanks for all the replies! I've got so much tied up in devices right now that I really don't want to buy anything else but I've said that before. What brought this about was pbusardo's "epiphany" video and now I'm obsessed that my genny isn't "set up right" because I still have to tip mine (all the time)to get it to wick. Other than that, I'm pretty pleased with the vapor and flavor I'm getting.

I thought the Electric Angel was pretty awesome looking but not for $200 plus whatever shipping! I like the looks and price of the smoktech telescope but don't know about that bottom button.

Right now I'm just watching and researching ;)

then your quest lies with the wick not the mod. a much cheaper journey.

all i can suggest is hit the rba forums for lots of discussion of this.
my suggestion would be to go to a solid or semisolid 500 wick or if your daring and want to learn something new check the threads on unoxidized wicks. this is what i do and i can vape with the provari standing on the table. i have turned on a few peeps to this and they are loving the results.

Donnah, I'm getting the electric angel myself in the next couple days can't wait. From a brick and mortar believe it or not. It may even out of your price range but just wanted to throw it out there. Busardo likes it.

Edit - oops just read you considered the EA already. I'm treating myself with it. Good excuse to say hi anyway :)

You're welcome :) Got more flavors than I know what to do with LOL, but thanks for the offer. I've been reading the forums but it's hard to weed out the good information from the not so good.

Hey Eric!! I read the other day that you were interested in the EA because your mother is finish (or is it finnish?) Let me know how you like it. I just bought another Provari and don't even need to be looking at anything else!

mechs vary widely in price and quality. higher end can be very hard to find like hybrids. I have an atmizoo roller (telescoping), thing is awesome how i have it set up, and the machining quality is top notch. A friend of mine has the poldiac, and that thing is a beast with its upgraded internal connectors. we'll have the same rba set up, and with gold or full silver connectors or whatever they use in those poldiacs, his mod blows clouds and clouds above mine. still love my atmizoo roller though for convenience and function. again, the issue is trying to find these mech's (best bet is coops or used). gl.
