Hi All,

I have been totally cig free for over 2 and a half months now. This is after smoking for 40 years (2 and a half packs a day the last years). I vap about 5ml of 18 mg nic a day.

Last night I was with a group of friends and some were smoking. A very accepting group and no one spoke of vaping or smoking.

The problem is that the smell of the cigs were really giving me an urge to smoke. I thought the urges would get less. I am mostly fine when no one is smoking around me except after eating. I tried not to breath it. It seemed like I wasn´t happy being a vaper at that moment (which I really am !).

I would like to hear other people´s experiences.

Thanks

It really varies as to how long (if ever) cigarettes become unappealing. Congrats on making it 2 months, but that's still pretty early, and temptation can still rear its ugly head. Great job making it through without giving in!

For me, it was several months before it went away. It's been maybe 9 months now and I find the smell of cigarette smoke objectionable. What's important is the not smoking, and you made it through!

I stopped smoking on Jan 2nd. And while I didn't crave a cig, when outside with friends who smoked the small made me want one real bad.

It took about 4 months and one day I found the smell turned my stomach.
So congrats on your 2 months and hang in there :)

My husband continued to smoke for a couple months after we started vaping. He wanted to use up all those expensive cigarettes he had just bought. ;) He tried not to do it around me, but I could still smell it, and at first it made me want a cig, but after a while it was just, "Oh, he's smoking again," and it didn't bother me so much. I was entertaining myself with yummy fruit and chocolate flavors at the time, so even though I had been a hard-core smoker for over 40 years, it was easy enough to vape the cravings away.

However, yesterday I was washing out a bottle of some tobacco flavored juice that hubby had been vaping, and I thought I was going to gag. The "wet dirty ashtray" smell was almost more than I could stand, and I couldn't get that stink out of the bottle (it was plastic) so it went in the trash. I asked him if that's how we smelled to other people all those years we smoked and he nodded his head and said he thought so. Now I feel the need to go and apologize to every non-smoker I ever got within 10 feet of my whole life. I also know that now there's no danger of me ever going back to smoking. It's been over a year now for me, and I think I'm finally disgusted by the smell.

It took me a week of using both cigs and e-cigs to finally quit smoking. Maybe I was lucky, but once I finished my last pack of cigs I haven't touched or wanted another cigarette since. In fact, my reaction of being around smokers now is pretty much like someone who has never smoked before -- I find it rather repulsive.

During that week of dual use, I never smoked an entire cigarette. I allowed myself HALF a cig during bad cravings, and saved the second half for the next time. Those half-smoked butts tasted pretty nasty when smoked, but perhaps that helped me to finally quit. I grew to prefer my vape more than the smokes that I was addicted to for over 30 years.

My hubby stills smokes and every time he comes back in I want one too! You are not alone, it happens to alot of people.
My hubby still smokes too along with vaping. When he comes in after a smoke it reminds me of my main reason for making the switch. The smell is pretty bad. He still occasionally smokes in the car and fortunately it neither bothers nor tempts me.

You are still pretty new to the switch @Dan40 Give yourself time and if you truly want this to work for yourself you will be able to resist the temptation and will be able to be around smokers without the desire to have one before long.

It keeps getting easier to enjoy your vape and to love your vape flavor and as time goes on the smell of cigarettes will become foul and nasty.....

you get so accustom to having your vape mod in your hand that you will not feel a need for the Sticks.....Nov. 24 2013 was my end of smoking.....

Congrats. That was not an easy hurdle to overcome. But you did it!!! It will get easier. I was a dual user also for about a year and it's been over a year of vaping only. Not too long ago a friend had a pack of cigs and offered me one. A year ago I probably would have said oh what the heck. But I said nope without hesitation. You got this! :)

I get weird little reminders about the "bad ol' days" and sometimes can even taste/smell a cig when my mind gets to wandering. I keep the last 2 smokes from my last pack sitting next to my chair, for emergencies, but so far, nothing has been enough of an emergency for me to go after one.

If you don't have a few options for juice or vape sets, it might help to have something different for those difficult times. If you needed something to hold that felt like a cig, maybe a cigalike would help. If you need a different juice because what you were using wasn't working with your activities maybe a different flavor or strength would help.

Keep up the good work and don't give up. :thumb::thumb::thumb:

@Dan40 - I can't tell for sure from your post...but were you vaping when the others were smoking? If you weren't, that could've made your temptation worse. If you were vaping though...perhaps you need a tobacco flavored eliquid just to get you through times like that. Maybe have 1 tank handy with RY4 or something in it, when getting together with those smoking friends? At least until their smoke is no longer a "good smell" to you, that might work.

By the way, I've read your posts since you first started on here. You've made it 2 1/2+ months now...and should be proud of yourself. You haven't reached the point yet where a smoke isn't tempting and the smell is really nasty to you. But...for most, that time does come. There's no set timeline that's the same for everyone. So just hang in there! We're all here to support each other any way we can.

It does get easier, but never quite goes away. Just got a hugh craving for a Swisher Sweets Cherry cigar (what I was smoking almost 4 years ago), and that hasn't happened in a long time.
But my pain levels are way up there today. Might be the reason....

I had similar urges for the first few months, but I just kept on vaping. Been cig free for over three years now, and I still use tobacco flavored e-liquid, I liked smoking. I can now smell a cig from a hundred feet away, and to be honest, I kind of like the smell. But at some point a few months into vaping, I realized that I actually enjoyed vaping more than I liked smoking, at that point the smell of a cig no longer was a trigger anymore. I guess for me accepting that I was committed to vaping allowed me to say goodbye to my old friend, tobacco, and now when I smell a smoker, it is more of a reminiscing than a desire to have one, that desire passed away for me, hopefully you can just stick with the vape and find your own peace with the temptations. Best of luck to you!
