So I vented a bit about this earlier in a various sub... and was encouraged to vent here in the general discussion... this currently seems to be a bit of a touchy subject... so... -dons flame ......ant suit-

so this morning, before going to work i hopped on and checked the various subs... i saw the thread too many january users talking about sub ohms... or whatever it was titled, i worked my way through the whole thread...

i agree with the original point that people shouldnt be rushing so quickly and the amount of people that are being pushed or jumping into sub ohms without proper knowledge is dangerous and hazardous to the entire vaping community...

i do not agree with however the people bashing those who want a larger vape, a thicker cloud and so forth and what not... this is not to say that this is blatant but it is present and it may not be widely openly present but its there...

for many people vaping was a way to quit smoking... key word smoking... not just cigarettes... i didnt smoke because i was addicted to the nicotine, dont get me wrong it had its benefits... but i was addicted to the smoke, the act of smoking, when i was in afghanistan i went and got a hookah... i used that hookah nearly every single night... when i had a couple of hours to kill i would break out the hookah load the shisha and just smoke for that time... i like to smoke, well i like to vape now, but smoke then...

the reason i never successfully quit smoking until i started vaping in september is I LIKE TO SMOKE! The reason I took to vaping so freely was it offered me the ability to vape like i smoked a hookah, big clouds, flavor, nice and smooth... awesome, and oh yeah im not tethered to it for an hour minimum to avoid wasting what i just put into it...

i still havent made a sub ohm build yet... will i probably, will i get stupid low, no... but because i like to blow nice clouds, because i enjoy the feel of a nice big cloud... and i enjoy the taste, dont label me as someone giving the vaping community a bad name... i am not in this for sport, i am in this for me...

everyone has their own preference and as long as they arent being stupid or careless with it, stop judging, oh yeah and following the rules, thats a big one... and as pbusardo said, if your not following the rules at least dont advertise it!

i have not followed up on the thread since this morning because it legitimately started to bug me...

sorry to toss that out there... just trying to defend those who enjoy a nice cloud every now and again...

I'm with you, as long as it's safe, do it up.

People often ask "why more, why bigger clouds?"

Well, like hookah, it's because it's fun. We only didn't do it with cigs because it would be incredibly painful.

That is, my humble opinion.

Oh I stay safe, I still haven't gone below an ohm yet. I might, who knows, but I am not rushing myself, I am enjoying myself... my current ohm coil is the lowest I have gone... its a nice twisted 30 ga 1 ohm coil... even with a cold flavor is coming through... yummy...

again I am not posting this to start something merely trying to keep people from ganging up on "cloud chasers" (that do so, but are informed, and stay within the limits and are safe)

I was telling someone in a post about this exact same thing. Last night I think it was this guy was complaining that people are making the vapers look bad and that we're ruining it for everyone because we like big clouds and we're getting a little dangerous with the sub ohm builds. Is not every single person, is the certain bad apples that don't understand the safety pay off building sub ohm. That's what makes it dangerous, not the big clouds we produce

I think if someone wants to sub ohm that's their business. I just wish more sub ohmers would learn all they could before doing it. I can't stand our society and how everyone is always trying to save everyone else from themselves. To be honest it makes me sick but unfortunately that is the society we live in and if/when a new uneducated sub ohmer blows their face off it could bring the hammer down on all of us. I respect every person's right to do whatever they want informed or not but the others here are right when they post about giving the FDA and it's cronies fuel for their fire against vaping. An exploding mod could have catastrophic consequences for all of us. It does concern me to see so many new vapers jumping right in to sub ohm coils on mechanical mods head 1st. It's a disaster waiting to happen to all of us. I think if someone wants huge clouds that's their business. I don't sub ohm but I won't lie. Seeing nice thick clouds upon exhale does make me happy for some reason. I don't know why and I don't care why. I just like it.

I do agree with this concern as well, I hope that I wasnt coming across as saying people should start at .1 ohm quad coils... i havent dropped beneath an ohm yet... not trying to start drama just saying is all... not all "cloud chasers" are bad...

I am by nature a teacher. WHen I see someone on the forum trying to sub ohm without the requisite knoledge I am on of the ones who chimes in and tries to provide it. I have no problem with people who know what they are doing sub ohming.

Heck I run a 1.2 coil on a mech which is lower than many vapers ever go.

What I do have a big problem with is brick and mortar shops sending people out the door with an unprotected mech, a RDA set up at .4 ohms and absolutely no education how to use it safely. I personally do not want anyone to get hurt.

Let's get real for a minute. Shorts can happen even when you do everything exactly right. It happened to me. I am fine because of the heat spring in my REO and I realised there was a problem. Someone with no knowledge of what can happen and the warning signs really is a baby dropped in an angry bears den. I hate with a passion seeing that.

I feel you. I'm more of a flavor guy than a cloud guy myself, but vapor production has always been one of "the big three" components that draw former smokers to vaping: Flavor, throat hit, and production. Everyone has their own preference.

The biggest problem right now is that people are vaping a little too far ahead of the technology. Seems strange to say that, as mechanicals are about as low-tech as you can get and they're pretty much the only option for <.5 sub-ohming.

We're just now starting to see things like widely available 30A batteries and electronics like the DNA30, things that will allow cloud-chasers to get what they want out of the activity without the risk. If people are hell-bent on subbing right now, then they have a responsibility to educate themselves on the dangers of doing it. My main gripe is that too few seem willing to invest the energy. All of the information they need and then some is readily available, and yet there are still posts here with new vapers asking why their switch suddenly became too hot to touch, or what that little black mark in the top cap of their RDA was, or why their battery decided to go nuclear in their pocket.

If you don't know the answers to those questions, you should NOT be sub-ohming. It's the instant-gratification mentality in action here, and it's dangerous for ANYONE who vapes. It's just one more bullet in the arsenal of the government and the ANTZ, and as soon as some ill-informed and impatient cloud-chaser comes along and chambers it for them, they'll fire it in our general direction. They don't care who it hits.

The truly maddening thing for most of us, I think, is that it only takes about 15 minutes to learn practically all you need to know about safety and mechanicals. It ain't rocket science! It takes VERY little effort to learn, and once you learn, sub-ohming is perfectly safe as long as you continue to practice safe habits.

It's tough love. And yeah, some reactions are overblown. But it's important to impress upon new vapers that you shouldn't just dive headfirst into subbing, and sometimes being a little belligerent and over-cautious is more effective at getting the point across.

I don't have a problem with cloud chasers at all. I am in favor of everyone doing whatever they want. It's not for me but that doesn't mean I should judge anyone else for what they like. I was just talking to my husband about this earlier. I am strongly against getting in someone else's business or telling anyone who isn't my kid what to do. These discussions about the uneducated sub ohmers have really gotten under my skin though. I think it's because I know how it could play out with the media and BG. I would enjoy a show if I ran into a random sub ohmer. I think it looks pretty cool. I really am worried about this though and I hate being worried about other peoples business.

That thread got under my skin too. I had a very eloquent long contribution to it all written up, then changed my mind on posting, because then I would have to keep following it.

Why can't we all just get along? There are all types of devices, batteries, toppers, wire gauges and tips for that exact reason. The Op had some valid points, and I think that a special tread for sub-ohm builds would be a great addition to the overall forum here, but to suggest that we 'protect' newcomers from it is just plain silly.

Yes, there is an inherent risk to bridging a high power battery and sticking it in your mouth, and perhaps many newcomers to the scene don't understand that. Sure, blowing giant clouds in a cafe is reflecting poorly on the community as a whole, and makes acceptance harder.. but rather than ostracize and shame that end of the community, why not teach safety and etiquette?

There will be people who are new in any hobbyist community, and they will want to jump in with both feet, especially if they are in circles where other people are already at an advanced level. This is true for everything.

It seems to me that cloud chasers are misunderstood. I am not one, but again, in any hobby, there are people who push the gear to its limits, and this is no different. But to bash one subgroup of the community for wanting to take the hobby in a different direction than yourself is ignorant. Sure, we have other issues to tackle, but rarely are those issues cohesively paired with the discussion around the topic.

The main issues are what I brought up earlier... safety and etiquette. We want to fight the fight that vaping is a safe alternative to smoking, and that the vapor we exhale does not harm those around us. This can be hard if reports of injury make the rounds, and trying to express that exhaled vapor is not the same as second hand smoke is hard to do when blowing clouds that fill a room. However, these are not the points I see made in that discussion, more that it turns into a mocking, teasing and ridicule. It's sad, really.

I think there is room in the vaping community for all. Big clouds, little clouds, sub ohm, big ohm, etc.
There are two issues I have with some of the posts I have seen about big clouds and sub ohms and they are safety and public image. I see some posts that make me think they are moving to sub ohms too fast with not enough knowledge to do it safety.
A little story about public image. A local restaurant I and some of my friends go to for breakfast lets us vape while we have our morning breakfast and coffee. When some of the customers complained to the manager about us "smoking" he explained to them we were not smoking. Some customers would walk by and start coughing, acting like it was cig smoke. Some of the guys in my group would make big clouds and try to aggravate the customers that were complaining. I had a talk with my fellow vapors and ask them to cut it out. I told them to just do normal vapes and let it go. I told my friends that if the manager continued to get complaints he would have to ban our vaping. They listened to me and within a month or so no one complains and they even come over and ask us about the ecigs. They comment on how good some of the flavors smell. We have a lot of non smokers that do not understand our ecigs and we need to use them wisely when around these non smokers.
I think my true story should tell us all that there is a place and a time for everything.

Sub-ohming is not something that should be approached in a haphazard fashion, and as posted several times in the other thread, getting the word out and trying to point new folks in the right direction is the best that more experienced vapers can do.

But yeah, the bashing? It makes us all look bad, and may very well turn people away from the forum and leave them to get their information from some idiot on YouTube running stacked 18350's in his mech on a .3 ohm build.

The people I take issue with are the ones who jump on here have say 8 post want to sub Ohm or rebuild but their initial post contains I don't have an ohm meter but tell me how many wraps I need to do with my coil to get said resistance.
Of you can't take the time or have a care to have everything you need for your safety why should we help you hurt yourself

I recently got into sub ohm builds but that was after countless hours refreshing myself on ohms law, current flow, and learning all I can about it. My current build is about a 0.6, so nothing too crazy there and even with a full 4.2 charge it's only at 7 amps (well below the 30 amp rating of my Sony 18650). I may go a bit lower, I may not. I definitely don't showboat or fog out any place except for my home office, or at a party to make the smokers jealous. Out and about I use my 1.3 ohm protank build and keep the vape to a "normal" level. As long as the person educates him or herself, have at it. But don't jump on the subohm, mech cloud machine right out the gate because you hung out in a vape lounge for an hour and Jim Bob next to you filled the room. Be smart and be careful. Respect the electricity because it can kill you. That's my 2 cents.

I gotta say that scares the crap out of me, seeing something like that, but I'll still try and talk them into doing it the safe way.
