Well, we did it! Both my wife and I traded in the ashtray for the e-juice. It's now been over one week since the last "analog," and it was much easier than anticipated. I thought I'd pass on a few notes for anyone sitting on the fence (like we were), and hopefully I can "pay it forward" in regard to all of the info I found on this forum. So, here's some advice from someone fresh off the tobacco truck, take it for what it's worth.

1. Get the right stuff. I came close to getting the blu, and then came even closer to an impulse buy of some cheapo cigarette store unit. Luckily, reading here got me looking at the Joye (Titan/Yeti/Whatever) 510 with the manual batteries. It also got me looking at the juice suppliers, and allowed me to make what turned out to be a good decision (so far), which was to go with the ecopure juice and the Joye 510 w/ manual batteries. I have spoken with and read about several people who bought a crappy e-cig (and were told that one cartridge equals a pack) without ever realizing, then decided that vaping wasn't for them because they had such a bad experience.

2. Get enough stuff to last you through the transition. Neither of the impulse "give it a try" options would have had enough stuff to keep us going. So we could have "tried" e-cigs, but not actually converted, and I think that would have made for an easy excuse: "Yeah... I need to order some more of that stuff... someday" We ended up getting two atomizers and batteries each, and we share a PCC, a USB passthrough, and two AC chargers. Plus we've got 60ml of 24mg juice and I plan on getting some of that 36mg Krystal. Figure out the money you're spending on cigarettes per month, stack that against the cost of a good supply of e-cig stuff, and the costs become very reasonable.

3. Shop around. After looking at sites selling the same thing for $70 (and more), I came across a little Chicago based site called cignot.com and found the 510 starter kit for $35!!! Since the ladies behind this, Vicky and Terri, also carry ecopure and had free shipping on orders over a certain amount, it was an e-cig trifecta for us. The fact that they kept emailing us to see how we were doing was just a tremendous bonus. From shopping around, I found that there are some get-rich-quick scumbags in this business, and some companies that have grown too fast to keep up with customer demand, so look around for recent reviews (like, on this forum!) and shop for service and brands over slick sites and flash ads.

4. Drink the Kool-Aid. If you read around this forum and elsewhere, people will seem a bit fanatical about the Personal Vaporizer (e-cig). You might get the impression that they're all in this business. At least, I thought that might be the case. I guarantee that I have no affiliation with anyone in any part of the business, and yet I find myself becoming one of these e-vangelists too. I tried to explain it to a friend of mine: "What if you could keep 90% of what you like about smoking, and get rid of 90% of what you don't like? And then, what if you thought the government was going to try to take that away from you in a couple of weeks?"

5. Keep your routine and embrace your triggers. Every other time (cold turkey, gum, patches) we have tried to avoid our triggers (morning coffee on the deck, hanging out with smokers, etc.). This time, we did everything as normal, but replaced smoking with vaping. Plus, we treated ourselves to all kinds of taboos like "smoking" in bed, in the car, at the dinner table, at the computer, among the anti-smoking fascists... Within just days, we weren't craving analogs any more, just the juice.

6. Be prepared to adjust your juice. We thought that we needed high (24mg) juice, because we each smoked a pack of Marlboro 100's every day. Yet 3 drags of 24mg put me on my ..... We also thought we wanted something that tasted as much like a cigarette as possible, and learned that "tobacco" flavor tastes like unburned tobacco - there is no "ash and tar" flavor. It's good (like a pipe shop smells), but some people may not see the point. For instance, right now, I'm vaping a 6mg blend with our custom flavor "Apple Strudel" (recipe below).

Get some USP PG (online, old time pharmacies or feed stores) or Food Grade VG (online or at health food stores - mix with 20% distilled water), some Lorann flavors (online at places like Barry Foods or at craft/candy stores), and make something that suits your tastes and smoking style. Either that, or buy a variety of strengths in sample bottles and be prepared to get more of what you like. For us, the 24 mg didn't allow us to vape enough to overcome the "got to do something with my hands" part of the addiction without headspinning and nausea. For you, it might be perfect, but you won't know until you've tried.

7. It's not just the nicotine. You will have withdrawals. You are going to get plenty of nicotine if you want it (Whoa!!!), and the cigarette feel, throat hit, clouds of smoke (VG is best for this), etc. However, there is very obviously other stuff in cigarettes that's addictive. If you've tried the gum or the patches before, this is MUCH easier, but it's not completely withdrawal free. I've had a few "anger issues" over the week, but after a few puffs they pass. There's also a bit of foggy-headedness, though that may be partially due to the increased nicotine.

8. Enjoy it! Don't make out like you're depriving yourself. Think of it as technology finally catching up to smoking. It's like a dream come true for me - smoking with a fraction of the guilt, no stink, no pinhole burns in my clothes, no fire hazard, no lung cookies, and on and on and on. Vicky at cignot (who held our hands through the process) said to think of it as "smoking something else," and my wife says she thinks of it as "switching brands." I, however, choose to think of it as "died and gone to smoker's heaven..."

9. Don't expect a lot of support. Ex-smokers seem to be the worst. When they see the e-cig, they want to tell you how "they quit the hard way." Non-smokers have been taught that second hand smoke is poison, and they can't be easily convinced that your plumes of vapor are harmless. Smokers, once they figure out what you're doing, are usually the most supportive, as long as you don't get preachy.

10. This is just personal opinion, but that burnt flavor you start to get at the end of a cartridge can't be good for you. I use the pyramid teabag trick, and top off before I run dry. I can only speak of the 510, but the tea bag made a HUGE difference in consistency and flavor. For me, one teabag does two cartridges, and I roll it as loosely as will fit. A dry cartridge will take 14 drops initially, and I usually refill 10 drops or less.

There, I hope that pays it forward, and maybe I can inspire a couple more people to quit the cigs. Even after only a week, I can't imagine going back to the old ashtray and butts. Hopefully this will remain legal, though there are plenty of busy-bodies who seem to think that they should control others, and they should all be taken out into a dark field, and sho... OK, still having some withdrawals - puff, puff, puff!

By the way, "Mrs. n-cough's Apple Strudel recipe" is: .5ml ecopure rich (tobacco-ish) 24mg; 1.5ml VG blend (80%VG/20% distilled water); 1 drop each of Lorann's caramel, apple, and pralines and cream.

Enjoy!

I just wanted to add that just as you shouldn't assume you need high juice if you smoke a strong cig, don't assume you need lower nic if you smoke milds, I thought I would only need 7-10 with 14mg for when the craving hits, turns out I need 20-24 full time. Get a bottle of 36mg and everything you need to cut it to give yourself the widest range of strengths to try, it really is important to get that right.

THIS is the best thing a new person can do!!! IF you go out side first thing in the AM to have a analog, than grab your e-cig and go outside!!!
The more you can train your brain to be ok with picking up your E-cig and not an analog the better you will be!!!

As soon as i gave in to this and made it part of my normal day and not trying to change my day, i lost all cravings for analogs!!!

H&N,

Great tips - the best is probably RTFM and DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Spend time reading the forums and take any user or supplier's (mine too) advice with a grain of salt. Over time, you'll find most of us will tell you the same basic things although the tips and tricks for individual models may change.

Speak personally (if possible) by phone or email to the suppliers. The ones that will be there for you in the long haul are not just in this to make a buck. They are users too and will give you invaluable advice because it isn't just a profit margin for them - it's a business they started because the honestly believe in the product. If all they want to do is forward you a price list or repoint you to their website, they were probably selling Shamwows six months ago and will be selling something else if they aren't seeing the money coming in.

Get in writing what their return and replacement policies are. Just because something is posted on their website, doesn't mean it will posted there tomorrow.

Find out what the shipping times are. Most US suppliers ship 2-3 day USPS Priority these days, and even the Chinese shippers are getting their orders here in similar timeframes. There are, of course, several users who have their own horror stories of waiting weeks or doing battle with companies who have such cryptic return policies that you wonder if they ever do any return business at all.

If you see a string of posts glorifying or villifying a supplier, look that poster up. 95% of the suppliers in this forum are honest, but it isn't unheard of for unscrupulous suppliers to have their friends create accounts to pump themselves up or bash their competition.

All this may sound pessimistic, but I tend not err on the side of caution. We chose not to carry disposables a long time ago because I think they give a lousy impression of what e-cigs are. I didn't want anyone's first (and last) impression to be "yeah I tried one of those e-cigs, pretty bad and a waste of money IMHO.."

Thanks for the compliments! I hope some other newbies are taking the plunge.

@yoshimi and wv2win: good points! I guess I was an inefficient cig smoker, and others might need more nic and or more flavor.

@webby: "speak personally..." Absolutely! Yeah, reading over my post it appears that I shopped price alone, but I chose cignot.com because they earned my trust, not because they were the cheapest.

@trog100: "minus the adverts..." cignot went way above and beyond to take care of me, and barry foods had the flavorings in my mail box before I could say "Oh, please don't make me deal with those horrible, quietly judgmental, passive aggressive craft store ladies." I didn't post links and I'm not affiliated, they're just the two companies I chose to do business with so far, and I recommend both. Now, about that screwdriver: Is that what my 510 will look like when it grows up?

@brialeeanna20: well said regarding normalcy. That's exactly what I experienced - accepting it as normal.

Excellent post. I ordered my first e-cig Friday and I have to wait over the weekend to get it. I cant express in words how excited I am to kick the analogs and go with the electronics, for me, like many, its a huge cost ben. as well well as it just makes sence.

I do have to say that there are many many different rebrandings and finding the options I was looking for was really hard. GrimGreen's reviews on youtube helped and I did go with a Nebulis from Vapornine.

Again im super excited and im not dreading the switch over like one would if they were quiting alltogether. Ill be keeping a blog on my progress and out of interest Ill be keeping a log of money spent if I were to buy a pack a day vs what I have spent on my juices and different e-cigs.

Excellent post indeed.

In my experience so far this is soo true. Ex-Smokers are definately more apt to be down right confrontational about how vaping is wrong and you should just quit like they did. I'd almost swear that it was like they were jealous that we have this alternative now when it was so much harder for them without it. The best was when one of my "Ex-Smoker" friends bummed 3 real cigs from me the other night as he spent 30 minutes telling me how I should just quit cold turkey like he did...

Jackass lol.

Joking aside though, definately plan on starting off with multiple kinds/flavors of juices until you find whats right for you. I thought I was going to be able to put down my analogs the second my e-cig with ecopure came in the mail. But its taken a week and orders from a few different juice vendors to finally find something that I think I can vape all day long without the aftertaste of the juice getting to me. Having to wait for new juice to come in after I already had my 510 has been worse than waiting for the 510 itself. Do youself a favor and get some samplers from different places right when you order your e-cig.

Only smoked 5 analogs yesterday. Seems like JC espresso mixed with a bit of Ecopure Gold for the extra vapor just might be a juice that I can lean on as an all day vape. Wish my camel and marlboro flavors from totally wicked would hurry up and get here! Few more days and I'm going to have to figure out how to put one of those niffy "1 day since my last analog, $$$ saved blah blah" sigs on my posts =)

 Love those "born again" non-smokers! Wish they'd admit that the reason they don't want others smoking is the temptation.

It's funny, (not that you're not right about 99% of "born-again-I-quit-by-sheer-willpower-you-should-to") but just to be fair, I've only had one woman tell me she was offended by vaping. (in a bar! Geebus.)

She got loud about and even called the manager over to complain even after I explained what it was and how they are helping a lot of people. Turns out she was an ex-smoker and lost a spouse to lung disease from smoking, thus hated being around anything that looked like a cigarette.

I told her I understood and put mine back in my pocket. That little consideration had two people follow me out to my car and bought kits from me in the parking lot.

Let's keep this thread going, I see where someone is compiling a Wiki and these should be compiled into a Sticky in the New Users Forum if nothing else.

Much is to be said about your consideration. You tried to explain your piece and being the bigger person you pocketed your vape. Bonus points for selling
. Analog or not I think being a respectful "smoker" is bar none the best thing anybody could be and only solidifies that we "vapors" are not all bad people.
