? about hacking up stuff?

When I started vaping I completely quite coughing (already had COPD).
I was wondering why everybody else began coughing up stuff and I didn't. Then after a year of vaping I started coughing up stuff. Is this normal for it to take a year and did it take that long for my lungs to start to work again. This lasted about a week and it has not quit.
