If the wick is properly oxidized it doesn't matter if it touches the bottom or not. The coil is isolated from the wick and no current is transferred. This is a myth that is bandied about far to often. If your wick is shorting to the bottom then the wick isn't oxidized correctly.Cut the mesh across the threat,do not roll the wick too tight, try to oxidize the wick more than 3 times,burn with juice also more than 3 times, make sure the the wick doesnt touch the bottom of the tank, create a barrier between the wick and the metal around the wick hole maybe with a small piece thin wrap of cig paper. Another thing i did if i had a hotspots around the wrap is put a drop of liquid onto the hotspots,may have to repeat several times. I've done all that and the result is great.
