well fellers (and ladies) , im back once again , only with a new friend...snus.REAL snus. Last time i stopped by , i had ordered some Totally Green liquid from rob @ vaporcountry. my atomizers blew out shortly after the juice showed up and i went back to smokes. about two weeks ago i got some camel frost to try to cut down on my pack and a half of newports a day , because i was really wheezing and coughing stuff up , it was horrible. The camel did what i needed it to do , but it was not stopping me from wanting a smoke. about 3 cigs a day that week and i was impressed.

long story short , i found that they sell general literally a third of a mile from where im staying (inlaws temporarily) , and its cheap (3.50 can) . I picked up some original portions , and they made it so i didnt want a cig. tried the other two flavors the store carries (mint and wintergreen) , and while the wintergeen reminded me of when i used skoal wintergreen as a youngster , it has a little off-putting flavor after abut ten minutes. The mint is very nice , but can burn my lip if i chain snus.

so the original lemony peppery goodness has kept me smoke free for 6 days now. i have been around a bunch of smokers , and even a vaper (at a hookah lounge no less) , and only once have i wanted a smoke (post-coital?) . The urge passed the second i lit it up , the nasty coating in the back of my throat made me just gag. i really dont know how i did it all those years...

So now i have been looking at other kinds of snus , and with the exception of julssnus , i just dont know what is worth spending the money on , and then pay the ridiculous shipping for, as far as other brands. I havent found anything but general locally , and im ok with that , but im interested in ettan and general onyx (which they dont carry locally for some reason).

After looking around i saw a DIY snus , and took that even father , since snus is tobacco water and salt (basically) , i thought why not grow my own. that search brought me back home. Here i am , where it all started , finally able to say no when someone asks if i want to go outside for a smoke (HA! ITS FRIGGING COLD OUT!) , and no more wheezing...

im basically sayin i love you guys , and just wondered who has tried growing tobacco for snus. i saw the topic with vaporer and exo , but im still reading it , and compared to the threads at snuson dot com , it seems overly technical . leave it to you guys to take it to a whole new level...lol..

anyways , i am looking for strain recommendations for northern ohio , and how you ended up drying and curing your baccy. the whole crock pot pasteurization sunk in fine , i just dont know where to go once i air-dry my leaves.

its a long way off , so i hope im home to stay.

btw : i was looking at KY21 , Madole , and Little Yellow sucker strains , from new hope seed co. any recommendations would be very welcome.

wow that was long...

Welcome back on the wagon. Axl has some ettan she is looking to sell. I never cared much for the general original or the wintergreen but do like the mint. As far as tobacco growing goes, Vaporer has retired from the forum but you might try to pm werkit. I think he had about the best results.

Hiya hova! Glad you found something that keeps the demon at bay. Vaperor is taking a break, but his experiment was in the same climate as your neck of the woods. I would look at the varieties he grew to see what your relults would likely be. The Jules blue is good. Thunder is always a winner in the ciggie killer catagory, too. The frosted might be up your alley.

yeah thats too bad , vaporer was one of my favorite members. very smart person without being condescending.. i understand though , sometimes you gotta take a break.

axl has some ettan , claq qui , and julssnus that im gonna try , at the price i cant beat it , and i am dying to try ettan and juls , but i cant bring myself to pay even 12$ shipping from some of the sites.

ill have to keep an eye out for a swap or something , i have been wanting to try the thunder frosted and thunder berry.

Hova, I'm curious. When did they force RIP/FSC into the smokes in your area. That's what forced me to try PVs, then ultimately to Ss. ""I smoked for 43 years with no noticeable ill effects other than the occasional smokers cough. Once FSC became mandatory in PA, I was coughing regularly and then the wheeze came on. That turned out to be a non-issue for about a year since I own a home in VA so I'd stock up down there enough to cover me till my next trip.

Then VA went FSC and all the symptoms came right back. Can't say I'm complaining because it got me here, but your comment made me wonder. I've heard so many complaints from smokers, but they seem to be dying off (the complaints, not the smokers) so maybe most just get used to it. Then again, I do catch the coughing from time to time,,,,and just smile and say thank you to that little can in my pocket.

i didnt even know they did this , until a friend who introduced me to RC's , said that they put stuff in cigs to make them go out so people dont burn their houses down...

i have been smoking since i was around 14 or 15 , and never really had problems. i used to do bmx , and found that a cig actually helped me breath when i was doing a lot of distance training. i think it was just in my head , but i would relax when i had the smoke , and would catch my breath. then about 2 years ago my wife and i got an apartment , and thats about the time i really started to cough gunk up. mostly it was in the morning. i just figured the apartment had a lot of dust or maybe mold or something. then after my accident 6 months ago we had to move into the in-laws place , and the coughing actually got worse. suffice to say i was off work at the time , and smoked about 1.5 to 2 packs a day , depending on how bored i was... this is when the wheeze started to be noticed by my wife. then about a week ago it got to the point where i was coughing bits of red , and when i would blow my nose , there was bits of red in that too. since i found snus again (started with camels but was still smoking 5 or so smokes a day , till i found general) . but since i stopped smoking i can breath so much better. i havent had what everyone who quits smoking says , where they cough up a lot of mucous or anything. its actually almost non existent , other than if i have a lot of coffee or something unrelated.

i do know one thing. i have been using rasberry leaves to cover that smoke habit craving , and i just roll my own styl , non filtered , hit the herbal cig a couple times , and im fine. i do this maybe once a day.

the price of a pack of newports here is 7$ on average. a can of general is 3.39+t . one can of snus lasts me about 3 days , as long as im not chain-snusing. which then it seems like after 3 or 4 in a row, i must build up a coating on my gums , cause the snus gets slimy , and i dont get any taste or nic feeling.

the funny thing that makes me wish i could stand the LOS , is that a can of original portions is 24 1gram pouches , and a can of los is 45grams of loose. the los just doesnt stay together for me , and i dont get any taste or feeling of nicotine from it. it feels like there is just mud or poo in my lip.

I use this method everyday. I still keep some portions around and stonewalls for when I'm in a situation where I don't want to mess with making my own portions but other then that it's all loose. Better flavor and lots more snus then portions. Plus the tax on smokeless where I am is crazy so los goes a lot farther.

I was curious because of your complaints about coughing and wheezing. Ohio passed their regulations on 1/6/09 and they had to be FSC by 5/1/10. I know the cigs I was buying in VA were changed over before they were required so I'd believe the conversion in Ohio started long before the implementation date.

Do you recall when you started to get the symptoms?

yeah it was early/middle of 2010. we had some issues with air quality and dust/pollen content at the apartment we were staying in , but the guy that checked the levels , aid they werent really that high , and unless i had pretty bad allergies , he didnt know what was causing it...

the rip/fsc stuff is was really trips me out , because they just put whatever they want in em , and there are no repercussions. this is the reason i dont trust anyone anytime in any position of power or wealth. im so ready to move to the smokey mountains ...

make o'r own whiskey an er own smoke tew....

It is amazing that they worry about things like E cigs being untested and claim smokeless is not a safe alternative to smoking, but without any testing they can add chemicals to cigarettes just on a whim. To listen to the antis against BT, claiming they lie and can't be trusted, then to have everyone back a product developed and marketed by Philip Morris to give them a competitive advantage to me seems absurd. Here's an interesting article questioning the political move that brought FSC to the smoking world-

Science and Public Health duped on RIP cigarettes: Hemant Goswami

    Complaints-

Consumer complaints about Fire Safe Cigarettes

Tom of Canal Fulton, OH March 20, 2010

I am 48 years old. I smoked for 30 years and never had any health related issues until Fire Safe Cigarettes were introduced in Ohio. Two weeks after the fire safe cigarettes were introduced I began having flu-like symptoms. After a few months my lungs would "burn" with every cigarette. I experienced numbness in my arms and hands, chest pains and generally felt old and sick.

I have now quit smoking for the first time. with in 1 day, the chest pain was gone, I still get arm weakness only during activity, but I am hoping that will soon be gone. I am now under a Dr's care. I know of 5 others who have quit since FSC's were introduced in Ohio. FSC's are bad news

There are a lot of articles and a lot of complaints, I'll just link one more-

Are the new FSC fire-safe cigarettes making smokers sicker than ever? - National Holistic Science & Spirit | Examiner.com

Apparently the health of 46 million Americans wasn't a concern when thinking of the appx. 800 that die a year from cigarette related deaths from fires, most of which were probably the smokers themselves and there is little evidence that FSC is reducing fires, go figure,

Surprise, surprise- NY was first to push the fire safe paper. It's a WONDERFUL place to live, roth. We seem to be first in every major restriction of personal freedom, tax hike, and financial crisis in the country. With the recent banning of smoking in outdoor spaces and the upcoming push to ban electronic cigarettes, we are on the forefront once again. I pay nearly $18 per $1000 of assessed value in property tax in a very rural area without public sewer or garbage collection and nearly that much in school tax. Unfunded state mandates are crushing our local municipalities and Albany is still producing massive state debt.

Contemplating the joys of living here, puffing on my soon to be outlawed PV and BWB, with an overtaxed General OP in my lip, and a cup of coffee. Wondering how long it will be until caffeine is deemed a sin worth collecting money on and coffee tax shoots to 300% of wholesale cost.

I hear you FC. I wouldn't live in NY. I constantly complain about PA roads, the suck, but generally PA has remained pretty fair for a NE US state. Plus, they don't have a smokeless tax yet. I got so disgusted with NJ, I don't even like going there.

I was just watching the news and Camden is proposing something like a 28% increase in property taxes so they can hire back some of the laid off police. I love how these governments feel the population is so rich that they can just continue to keep dipping into pockets when their financial irresponsibility puts them in the red.

Maybe Bloomberg needs to be the next President, he seems to know what's good for everyone. I was just reading where he was spending over $250k for three head chefs at that NYC mansion to make sure everyone was eating well there. All on taxpayer's expense.

im not too sure what the taxes are. the price on the general i buy , says 3.39 on the case , and im pretty sure the total cost is around 3.44 or 45 ... dont quote me on that , but i know its not much because i havent even noticed any price difference. they may just include the tax in the price. cause i dont remember the price changing at the register...

i hear what you guys are saying , the whole tax system is nothing but a pyramid scheme. if it were up to me , i would be living in alaska or the ever-sprawling and ridiculously massive mountain ranges of northern canada. i want to be as far away from normal people , and government , it isnt even funny.i fully believe that government is way out of line right now. from federal to local , its gotten too big.

i vaguely remember some talking in high school with my history teacher about a part of the declaration of independence , or the constitution , or just a side note by one of these authors , that says governement should be built anew every 7 years to keep up with the change in times , and to better the civilization. i have always felt this way , and it appalls me that the government hasnt changed since the separation from england.

my old man isnt one for controlling , either government or otherwise , and he has always told me
"Real education must ultimately be limited to men who insist on knowing, the rest is mere sheep-herding."

it never really made sense until i saw someone on another forum with the sig tag...
"no need to muzzle a sheep if you whisper seductively in its ear."

people have learned to trust that other people know whats good for them , more than they do. i personally would much prefer to be an unknown hillbilly up in the mountains , growing my food , raising my children , and not giving a care to what the government tells me is good for me. i think ill be the judge of that.

sorry , government and control are two issues which just irritate me to no end. i could do without either. you better believe if some natural disaster hit my area , i would be one of the ones refusing government help. i saw too much crap with katrina where the government sent people to houses that the people were on the roof, only to collect their guns . you know , to keep everyone safe...
