Hey Dan,
I was thinking along the lines of a turbo for cars but those all have 90 degree off set flow, with some really intricate machining you could get it to be axial flow but it would be a pita, so then I was thinking of how super chargers work with a worm gear type pump, again some heavy machining to make it work but thats a great example of an axial flow compression. Then of course once the words axial flow entered my head I thought how stupid I had been, lol I am a gas turbine mechanic for the navy, all of our gas turbines (jet engines) are axial flow, well for ship main propulsion anyway. Your idea for a set of stationary blades and two revolving blades has the right idea just needs a little tweaking. On our turbines between the blade tip and the casing we spray in a foamed aluminum, when the blades rotate the first time they cut into the foam and create a seal so air cannot travel backwards, each set of blades is slightly smaller than the previous set which causes the compression of course, but since the outer edges are sealed the air has no choice but to move forward. Our compression ration by the time it makes it all the way through the compressor is 16:1. Here are some pics from the GE LM2500 which is the workhorse of Destroyers, Cruisers and Frigates...

The green section is the stationary blades, they are attached to the outer part of the turbine assembly, the gold blades are the rotating ones and they are all connected to a central shaft. Obviously this is a cutaway.
A real one that has been opened up along its center line
An Exploded diagram

I was a BlackHawk mechanic in the Army for 24 years, I am well versed on turbine engines :) Horaaah
I was shooting for somthing that will increase the air pressure slightly not 16:1 LOL Also you have to take in the size/length factor. So I am in hopes the 2 bladed turbine design will be enough to increase pressure to my needs. I modeled it in one piece so the two fans can not be removed from the housing. One great thing about 3D printing, objects can be made inside of other objects that would not normally fit since it is all printed in layers.

Here is the fan assy, that will be printed inside of the housing:

Here is the housing the fans will be printed inside of:
FanHousing_zpse31b4cf0.jpg

Also notice on this new design the thickness of the blades, they are 1mm thick, as the last design could not be printed because the blades were too thin.

Thanks for the pics and ideas on the turbine engines, remindes me of my days in the Army!
Dan

Dan,

Just thought about this. I know someone said a page or post or two before, this would benifit someone with COPD or something to that effect. As I am going to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed, something like this would be an awesome thing to use. Well, not me personally, unless you lend one to me. Anyways, back on subject.....

It would help prevent dry socket.

Don't mind my rambling. I've got excedrine, advil, and tea, and red bull in my system. Haven't slept other than the 35 minutes I was sleeping and its 5:38 am here......

The APAM looks awesome btw!

As a matter o fact, I have sent proto #3 to Rusalka on loan during his dental procedure just for that purpose!
I Will be interested in the results!

I haven't had a chance to read through the entire thread yet but I had an idea so sorry if this was already said. Would this work without a motor? In some cases, just adding a fan assembly(a good loose fan) will increase the air flow. Maybe something you could try on either end of a carto to see which side works better. This way, you could still achieve a similar effect but without the noise or heavy modifying of the assembly. Plus making it cheaper for a user.

Dan, just got done watching proto #2 video. What wwould be cool also is if the fan motor had an on off switch to me semi auto or manual meaning you don't have the motor running if you hit the button. That would probably be best left for a more permanent mod like a 14500 or 18650 box mod but........ yeah. Had to go and fill your head with other possibilitys.

I was just looking for something like this to make a magic staff that emits smoke as part of its action. One of the early links on this thread for a small fan, showed me another small squirl-cage type fan. I imagine this type of fan will produce more pressure, with less noise.

It doesn't look to be that much bigger than your existing mods, though the round metal fans look much cooler. But, the whine would annoy me. I wonder if the above would really be any quieter.

Thanks, already saw that one. Problem is it is just to big, almost 2" in diameter, plus setting up the connection points for the PV and atty would be a pain. Might work in a custom box mod though.

Currently waiting on a revamp of the turbine mod, the ones that can in were to close tolerance on the center shaft and as a result the fan shaft was fused to the outer housing so the fans would not turn. Added more space between the center shaft and the housing and waiting for the next production to come in.

Mannnnnn

Redesign again, the problem I think is there is not enough space to remove all of the material in that tight of space. Sooo another redesign to allow for for seperate pieces that can be assembled.

New design...

Now the waiting begins again....
