I've only been vaping for 3 weeks now and have had quite a few "vaping encounters". First of all, I live in a very rural area, so rural that "rural" is in the name of the town
Just last evening I was at my step-daughter's chorus concert and stepped outside for a quick vape during intermission. After about three hits and the analog smokers seeing my little blue light illuminating, I was giving a brief primer to about 5 analog smokers very interested in my ecig. Fortuntely I had some vendor cards with me and passed them out. Hopefully I'll see some credit pop up on my account soon!!
Surprisingly I have yet to meet another vaper, especially at work. I teach at a major university and would think that ecigs being considered "progressive", I would run into one, but not yet. When I started vaping I asked the department head if there were any rules about vaping inside the building. She turned to me and asked, "What is vaping?" Well, I had to explain briefly and give a demonstration. I had a vanilla flavored juice in my PV and she remarked how pleasant a smell it was, kind of like an air freshener. She said she wasn't aware of any rules against it, but would look into it. Taking that as a "NO", I started vaping in my office between classes. I have had a few colleagues (who have a stick up their rectal orifices anyway) stop and ask in an accusatory, "What do you think you are doing???" with hands on hips glaring at me. I simply looked up and replied, "Paperwork". (First let me say I am the free spirit of the department and known for my off-beat sense of humor which some see as irreverent or disrespectful, mainly those that I mentioned about the stick
) A few got rather flustered and had to push it and ask about the "smoke". I replied, "What smoke?" (Secondly I must say here that if I get the chance to push someone's buttons, I won't hesitate
) They say, "The smoke coming out of your mouth". "That's not smoke, it's vapor." Then I give the brief primer on ecigs... One of these "stick-carriers" went to the dean of the department and complained. Later that afternoon he came into my office and we chatted about vaping. He was an analog user and once again, I gave the brief primer on ecigs. He was very interested and I gave him one of my vendor cards and on the way out of my office he replied, "No worries about the vaping and ignore Dr."Stick", he's also .....ing about something or another. I even had a campus cop pull up beside me in the parking lot last week as I was vaping and looking at some papers before I entered the building. He said he'd been watching me for a few minutes and was curious as to what I was smoking and the device I was using to smoke it. (He thought I was smoking something illegal). So once again, I showed him my device, explained it wasn't smoke he saw and gave the brief primer on ecigs. I never thought when I went into teaching I would be giving lessons on ecigs
I'm not that self conscious about vaping in public, however, I don't vape in businesses or places where there's no smoking allowed, just seems to be a common courtesy to me. I've even looked into the state laws about vaping and it is not covered by any no smoking laws and, therefore, it's legal to vape wherever you want unless asked not to by the proprietor of the building or business.
