I was a pretty light smoker (about $50 per month on the cheapest smokes I can find here -- Pall Mall) -- but also a really broke one (has been a tough couple of years for us with various life changes) -- and although the $50 I spent getting started was something I had to sit and rationalize to myself for awhile, I can already tell that there's nothing stopping me from stretching that investment out for at least a coupla months -- well beyond what I need to break even.

I really feel for the folks that are still smoking a pack a day or more -- you've got to be really wealthy or really hooked! (Not that I don't sympathize -- could never understand how I made it to the "only at work" level with no problem, but still couldn't quit!)

A friend is jumping into this (vaping) really quickly with about a $100 investment based on what he's seen and heard from me the past few days -- and when I was surprised that he'd risk $100 on something just a few days after hearing about it, he said that he drops $200 a month *minimum* for smoking -- so fronting less than half a month's smoking cost to try something healthier and cheaper was a no brainer.

I spent about $300 a month on cigarettes. By my calculation, I'll be spending about $40 a month on ejuice. And that's including $20 postage per order (i have to order from the states). HUGE difference. No wonder you can't buy e juice in Australia, and no-one knows about them - it's not taxed, so look at the amount they lose per smoker switching to ecig!

When I quit in February (this year) I was buying 3pack "speshuls" @ ~$10.50. I swore, when I started smoking back in the 80's, that when they rose over $2/pack I'd quit. By that time I was hooked. I started when cigarettes were just under $1/pack. They started rising drastically soon afterward.

$10/pack in NY?? OMGWTF??? No way!!

The price is the problem. Dougiestyle I said the same thing here in Canada when I was young. If smokes get over $6 I will quit for sure. Well I bet you can guess what happened. At $11.00 a pack in Halifax 5 years ago I was still smoking like a chimney. Poor as hell but still smoking. What makes me mad is the high price is all due to taxes.

Yup, its total madness in NY for cigs. A friend of mine has a cabin in upstate NY and I went there for a week with him last summer. I almost fell over when I saw cigarette prices. $9.85/pack for Parliament Ultra Lights which is what I was smoking at the time. I ended up being happy he told me to bring enough smokes for the trip. I straight up thought he was kidding when he said $10/pack there. We're both vapers now...

In NY, it's easily $10 a pack right now. You could go to NJ and get them for around $8.

Some states, like NJ, are talking about lowering the price to "encourage customers from out of state to travel and spend" but in the same breath, want to pass state laws that would ban the sale of nicotine products not approved first by the FDA.

This is why I quit. I refuse to be treated like a leper for being a smoker in the first place while they do nothing but use you to fatten their wallets. No one says a word about the scam they are running with the price-fixes because the public have all been endoctrinated against smokers anyway.

So many people say they will quit because of the prices, but then when the increase happens you just rationalize the increase and find another way to support your habit. I did the same thing for years.... but then I got into Reserve smokes which allowed me to smoke even more because it was the same price as pack for a whole carton.

So glad I started vaping!

I am totally with you on this. I didn't even really want to quit - But I am so sick of this BS from the government. At $8.50+ a pack and 1.5+ packs a day comes close to $5K a year, most of which is going to the Government, so they can treat me like a second class citizen and teach non-smokers that it is cool to look down on us and treat us like crap.

Finding vaping makes me feel like I have beaten the system! I feel like a revolutionary. "Give me my PV or give me death!" hmmm, well maybe it is not as catchy as the original. ;)

Just curious zer0ith are you in the States or Canada? I'm in Canada and the reserve smokes are so cheap.

Yup I'm in Burlington. I use to head up to Brantford area. I was getting ones for around $15 but there were other ones around $10 that I didn't like as much.

I couldn't have said it better, GMoney. The Nanny State is here and ready to make it illegal to vape in public, buy nicotine juice they can't control and of course, continue to be paid to think up ridiculous ways to pad their state pockets under the hypocritical veil of "making sure you stay healthy".

Look at this one yet? Fat tax: Arizona's Medicaid program looks at charging smokers, diabetics, obese $50 a year | StarTribune.com

They want to start charging $50 fines for smokers, diabetics and overweight people and it's not just limited to Arizona. This was on the NY/NJ Metropolitan Area News this morning.

I would like to also slap a surcharge myself - $1,000 per offense - Against holier than thou control freaks who somehow feel they have the right to act like my mother and be paid for it to boot - not including the "pain and suffering" they have caused every human being they have flagrantly treated as an outcast of society. This is getting out of control.

NYS nets $5.55 for every pack sold. It's even worse in NYC where they tack another $1.00/pk on top of it. Highest cigarette tax in the nation. With the NYS goverment going after the reservation business it even caused problems there. Prices at the reservation doubles in 6 months. We were spending $500/mo for 2 smokers. Even with all the mods we bought we have already broke even 6 months in. Especially with me DIYing our juice
