Its possible that I'm not blowing out the attys often enough. I sit most of the day and just suck on it,like a pacifer,so maybe I need to blow the attys out more often.
So Puck, any chance of making something that hits like the Puck but smaller, girlier? I love mine, but I worry about taking it out since it looks like a detonator to me. And is super obvious in my itty bitty hands

Hmmmmm.... never thought of girly :) I'll give a shot at it here soon when I can drum up some time :)

I'm gong to post this here, since we are using Nimh batts and no one else really is...

On eBay there is a chinese supplier claiming to be selling AAA nimh's that supply 1800 mAh! Is that even possible, or are they pulling a fast one? If it's true, and they're any good, this could be a serious boon for our mods! Not sure I can link here, so just search for 1800mAh Ni-MH purple battery. They are selling 24 for .99 plus around $9 shipping.

hmmm....seems fishy.

One step ahead of timy! I got some $.99 1800 mAh AAA's in from China a week or so ago....

My charger shows they've taken a charge in the range of 737 mAh - 891 mAh.

The charger manual said the batteries might have to go through a couple cycles for max capacity but the charger has a refresh function which I used on all batteries.

The charger came with a set of 1000 mAh AAA's and they're going through the refresh cycle now and it takes a while but it will be interesting to see what kind of charge they take for reference.

So far I'm not impressed with the "1800" mAh at all. Some other 1000 mAh's I'm using seem to work better but I haven't done enough testing yet.... I'll update when I have more info....

The car at night. I drive a lot :)

Oh, I was thinking maybe it was something more fun that that.... :vapor:

Pumping and driving is much easier than dripping and driving!

PM sent, Jim! Thanks very much!

How much juice does the pump put out per stroke? That info would be pretty handy, especially with the leakage concerns noted above. As for sealing the connectors, I put a nice blob of solder over the middle hole. Both connectors I used fit a bit loosely, so air flow isn't a problem. I did overfill on purpose just a few minutes ago to see what would happen, and it pooled in the bottom of the 510 connector before leaking over the edge and down the side of the box. Inside is still high and dry!

Looking forward to the pump mod... Speaking of which, is everyone able to see the pics on the Puck SD build page? For some reason I am not seeing any pics in the very first post...?

I hereby dub the dual atty model... The Puck Double!

Have a great "Puck-ing" day!

I did!! And I wouldn't be offended if you told me to go puck myself too!!!

The "Puck Double"? Can I get fries with that?

The pump puts out a consistent 3 drops with each stroke. I posted more details on the mini-pump thread so I didn't clutter up this one and others had the same question.

Ok, so now I have the test bottle with hose connected staring me in the face... Stop me before I mod again!!

I suggest everyone spring for 10 of them because it works so well you'll wanna build more!

Hey capecodjim, where did you buy those little pump bottles?

This looks like a very good addition for me to use (since I drive in the dark a lot :) ) I'm thinking about going with your Puck driiper pump idea with the 4AA box and using a 4AAA battery holder inside. I will just make it a dripper. I've played around with bottom feeding 901 attys and I don't really like it. It seems to lose some of the flavor. Dripping however, keeps the flavor. Your idea is a perfect match for that.

I've also done the sqeeze bottle inside but care for that either too much because it's a pain to cut the holes and make it look good. I'm not a perfectionist (well, maybe I am) but I like it too look good since I get a lot of questions about what I'm "smoking" :) Your little pump bottle looks perfect :)

hahaha, My God, that's wild! I'd probably end up poking one of my eyes out somehow :)

I use a 901 atty and it runs pretty cool but your mod solves the problem of carrying around another atomizer in case one burns out. You don't even have to remove the old one :)

Fantastic ! :)

The bottles came from here on ebay. They're listed as 3ml but hold around 8ml and from the threads down is the same size as a 14500 battery.

The Pump-A-Puck has been my main vape since it was made. I cannibalized a 4 x AAA box for the battery contacts to keep it easier but you could modify the ones from the AA box.

A couple suggestions:

capecodjim-albums-pics-picture21262-2010-10-2223-09-58.jpg

Run the hose down a hole near the pump button and back up near the atty so the excess hose can be kept inside. Use a fire button that's taller than the pump so you can rest your thumb on the pump and fire easily. I didn't use that elastic after the first hour and the hose stays right in place. Connect the hose to the pump cap first because that's the most critical and run the hose through the unit before connecting to the cart end!

capecodjim-albums-pics-picture21154-ult-1.jpg

Put the positive lead of the LED to the left. Then you have room for the resistor w/o squishing it in and the neg LED lead is right at the neg atty contact for easy soldering. One switch lead has the neg battery terminal of the left most battery soldered to it. Measure with a battery in place and bend the switch lead at the proper length before soldering.

capecodjim-albums-mods-2-picture23789-pump-hose-inside.jpg

Route the hose from the back to the front so it will sit on top of the batteries, not under them. I have it under some wires but would route it over them. I'm going to fix it when the unit fails but that hasn't happened yet.

capecodjim-albums-mods-2-picture23788-pump-switch-inside.jpg

To retain functionality of the main switch w/o wires, I cut the metal battery contact terminal in half. (It was one piece and connected the neg terminal of the right most battery (#1) to the pos terminal of the one to the left of it (#2)). Then I ran a jumper wire from the right most switch contact to the positive battery terminal plate(#2). The negative terminal plate of battery #1 is connected to the middle contact of the switch so when the switch is off it breaks the connection between the two batteries.

The batteries are staggered with the two to the right higher than the other two because it fit better that way. The pos terminal contact of the right most battery can be soldered right to the bottom of the atty connector.

The system has worked flawlessly and I'd highly recommend trying it. The AA box is on the large side but not huge and fits well in the hand and pocket. You have to be careful but it's not fragile. It can roll around the car or coat w/o the hose getting snagged or it spilling or breaking.

Pumping into a cart filler hits the same as dripping but I like it better because you get more warning before it goes dry as a signal to pump. With the cart the vape tapes off and weakens. With the straight drip you can get a slight burnt taste when it starts to dry.

Good luck! I'm looking forward to some feedback from you guys and hope you like it!

btw: Puck, I never would have taken the construction pics if not inspired by your tutorial. I agree 100% about helping people off analogs with mods too!

Edit: Puck, I just thought of a new design concept in true puck form.... A 4 x AAA box to house the batteries and a 2 x AA box attached back to back to hold the atty and juice bottle. It would make it a lot easier to change the batteries, the atty could be recessed inside the box and it would be easier to build also.... hmmmmm......

Great job! Love the pics. :) I'm going to order some of those little pump bottles today. The only thing I may change for myself is where the switch is located. For me, I prefer the switch on the flat side but that's just me. I've built some with the switch on top and it is harder for me to reach it (usually drop the box a few times) since I have smaller hands. (Enter the short jokes here... :) ) Having the switch on the big flat side is just a bit more comfortable for me. I know it will be harder to work it in on the front but I will find a way :) I could hold it like what I call the pinch method between the thumb and fingers with the index finger pressing the button but I sometimes like to conceal the box in my hand sometimes. Having the button on the front makes that easier to do also.

Other than that, I myself wouldn't change anything else for my use. Dude, keep up the great work and keep coming up with other additions for the Puck or other NiMH based mods for that matter. We need to get more people using this as it will help them stay satisfied with e-cigs and keep them off the evil coffin nails (and also keep some money in their pockets).

I can't wait to see what you come up with next :) I'm serious!

Thanks for the kind words Puck!

The whole removable face is wide open real estate for your switch. I put a DVM there because there was so much room. You just need to leave enough slack in the wire to open the unit. There's plenty of room inside to house the wire and it helps keep the batteries in place.

I think you can also retain the bottom 2/3 of the plastic divider between the bottle and the battery. I gutted the whole box while working but that will help hold things in place. You have trim the top 1/3 because the cap is slightly wider. You also need something at the bottom of the bottle to keep it in place but it should be removable so the bottle can be removed easily. I just used a folded piece of paper.

Lots of room on the inside and the front cover.

Thanks Golden! There's no off position on the genius switch!! :hubba:

I was carrying a couple Pucks with different flavors in from the car and was inspired by the dual atty mods here to create a new two flavor dual atty pump mod.....

A 4 x AA battery box should hold 2 pump bottles in the middle two positions and 14500 batteries in the outer slots with an LR atty over each. They could be built basically as two separate mini-pump units housed in one box but shared batteries (or not).

Then you can have 2 flavors for a little variety and 2 14500's for a all day vaping and then some. If the hardware didn't fit a battery could be sacrificed to make room and you can carry a spare battery.......

So many potential mods..... I have all kinds of things I want to mod everything from swivel and other kinds of flashlights to gas grill lighters with bendable extensions.... but if I can't add a pump it's a non-starter......

Glad to see you're using a DVM. I bought 5 of them last month (2 of them 2 months before). I love those little things. Looks like the same kind you are using. I pay attention to detail in photos and I see that you even went to the trouble of putting connectors onto the leads to the DVM. Now that's some extra love, above and beyond :)

I ended up destroying my first two DVMs. The first one, I used a peice of duct tape to hold the DVM in place while the epoxy set and when I pulled it off, it ripped off all of the surface mount components. Lesson learned. The second one I used for a while until I dropped the box and one of the batteries took out the surface mount components. Those components are very delicate. Next time, I'm going to leave that plastic cover on it and just cut out the display.

That's heat shrink tubing on the leads so they don't short and to relieve stress on the wires. I wish I could find a little connector socket so I could build it into mods and spot check the voltage. Ya, those little things are cool! I haven't killed any yet.....

I have electronics for 5V regulated and VV mods but haven't gotten that adventurous yet but figured the meter would be sweet in the VV. I picked up 3 and I left the clear plastic covering on mine and you don't even notice it.

Nice find on the bottles! That listing says 4ml while the first one said 3ml but holds a lot more.... It certainly looks like the same bottle. I'd buy the free shipping ones and mention something in the paypal comments to be sure you get the ones that will fit.

Lee.... Sorry to disappoint your plans.... Great minds think alike!! Take what's already been done and expand on it. Hopefully Puck's great tutorial and the comments and pics will help you avoid some of the pitfalls and problems along the way and will speed things up for you.

Part of the fun is sharing... I like Puck's philosophy that anything to make mods easier to build is a good thing if it helps people off analogs.

I have parts for VV or 5V regulated but I'm happy with 5V or LR vaping at 3.7v so not in a rush. The puck's have been my main vapes and do the job fine. Juicing and charging were more important so I focused on the pump. A USB charge is all I'm missing now and I'll do that with the Trekk one way or another. That already has 5V regulated output with the USB circuit.

I had a couple PM's asking about USB charging for NiMH. It's difficult to charge NiMH batteries in series beause they won't get an even charge. They want to be charged individually so there's no easy way to charge them w/o removing them... as far as I've found anyway.

We'd love to hear about your ideas and mod in progress. Take and post some pics when you build!! You can share your secrets with us... we won't tell anyone!!

It sucks to read this thread and realize that just about everything I had planned on incorporating into my mod I'm coming up with, has been done by you guys. Ugh. Well, not everything :) Jim, could I take you up on the offer for one of those bottles?

Don't be disappointed. We all borrowed from each other in one place or another and there is always something new to come up with or add... or a new twist on another idea. Just in this post alone there are all kinds of additions and twists on the basic design. It's all about function and making vaping easier and less of a hassle. When you think of it from that perspective, I'm sure you can find something we haven't thought of yet (altough these guys brains are working 24/7 on this stuff).

Just think, ease of use, longer lasting and as small as possible. That's what we think of all of the time and how these all come into creation. Even just a very simple variation can make a big difference sometimes :)

All of my thoughts revolve around easy to build/repair, cheap to build/maintain and long lasting battery life. That's what I shoot for. No expensive mods for me :)

Thank you Puck for the great mod. I made a Puck and then the SD. I use a 510 connector and cartos usually and both mods vape great and last long. I am looking around for a more rounded type battery case for us girls though because even the SD is...well ....just too brick shaped. If I am successful, what will we call it?
